30 days only - new trial topic alert!

JustineMumsnet · 03/10/2013 16:45

Hello, hello

Following on from this thread, we've been having a think about a new, more-serious-than-Chat topic in which threads would automatically go pffft after 30 days.

The simplest thing we feel would be a new topic called '30 days only' with with a note at the top explaining that it's (broadly speaking) a more serious option than chat for any threads which you'd rather didn't stick around for too long.

As you know, we don't really see ourselves as topic monitors, as going off-topic isn't against our Talk Guidelines. So it isn't our plan to 'police' threads in this area to ensure that they're sufficiently serious and/or on-topic, it's more of a "nudge" and no one will get into trouble for posting in the wrong place unless of course it's a deliberate attempt to derail (see my post here by way of further explanation.

We'll give this a go and see how we get on with it. As ever we are open to further thoughts/ refinements/ general tinkering about.

Many thanks.

And this is one of the many reasons I love MN.

Despite all the constant bloody whinging that goes on HQ really do still listen.

Even though every time they try anything new a load of posters complain about how shite it's going to be and how pointless it is, they still genuinely consider our ideas and are willing to make changes.

God knows it must be a thankless task at times and it must make them feel like telling us all to sod off. Especially because they simply cannot win whatever they do.

IMO it's definitely worth a go. If it doesn't work - it doesn't work, no harm done. If it does work then we finally put an end to all the 'derailment/STFOT' arguments.

Thanks for HQ, lord knows you deserve them!

Rooners · 06/10/2013 11:35

Is it just me who has never even seen someone complaining about derailment on a chat thread?

Like, ever?

RandallPinkFloyd · 06/10/2013 11:36

Have you been asleep for the last 2 weeks Rooners?

Rooners · 06/10/2013 11:39

Evidently

NomDeClavier · 06/10/2013 11:44

IMO the topics needing pruning, which they do, is a separate debate. Nanny shares, for example, is mostly being replaced by MN local so that could just be integrate ino the existing CMs, nannies, APs etc section, and that's just one example. People may still not use them for certain subjects because they have something serious they want to talk about but don't want it to hang around forever. Or because they're just lazy and don't want to trawl through the topics. You can't really tell which.

The problem with OTBT is that you can never find it. I forget that it's there and would post in chat if I wanted something to self-combust. If this new one appears in active convos then people will use it and those who it's want to chat will steer clear.

RandallPinkFloyd · 06/10/2013 11:44

Be grateful, I think there's a lot of us who wish we'd slept thought it!

TEErickOrTEEreat · 06/10/2013 11:48

Um, Rooners? You posted on at least one thread where it was discussed ad nsuseaum. You and I chatted about it at the time.

And I was quoting from Justine's OP, so I'm not sure why you're confused?

Rooners · 06/10/2013 11:49

Did I? Christ I must be more sleep deprived than I thought. Sorry.

I'll go and have a look.

Reality · 06/10/2013 11:51

Can we not just have (eg) Stuff about kids, stuff not about kids, other stuff?

Rooners · 06/10/2013 11:52

If you mean this then I didn't read the thread. I just read the OP and posted one message.

Rooners · 06/10/2013 11:55

I have just searched for messages by me, containing the word Tee, in the last month and it has returned zero posts.

I think their indexing is off or something, I know I have spoken to you.

TEErickOrTEEreat · 06/10/2013 11:58

Definitely off, then Rooners. I know we've spoken recently! And not just here!

Perfect Reality!!! Neat. Clean. To the point!

Rooners · 06/10/2013 12:00

I know Tee! Summat is up with it.

HaroldLloyd · 06/10/2013 12:38

It might be handy for people that want to talk about something sensitive with more traffic that's why some things end up in chat.

FavoriteThings · 06/10/2013 14:05

It's a thumbs up from me Justine.

SoupDragon · 06/10/2013 14:05

Is it just me who has never even seen someone complaining about derailment on a chat thread?

I've only seen people complaining about it on the complaining threads. Not on the actual thread IYSWIM.

Pagwatch · 06/10/2013 19:08

There should be sections :

I hate mumsnet and most of its users.
How Justine got it wrong and how I could run this site much better
I don't like you. Really, all of you
Swearing is really awful and a sign of a limited vocabulary.
God I'm marvellous.

HaroldLloyd · 06/10/2013 19:10

Don't forget:

Christmas is shit
Halloween is shit
Easter is shit

YoniBottsBumgina · 06/10/2013 19:14

I think 30 days is pretty short. Threads can easily run for a month. I've seen OTBT threads go poof and surprise the posters because they didn't realise it had got to 30 days already.

IMO 90 days as in chat is fine. Seems like a good idea though?

TEErickOrTEEreat · 06/10/2013 20:35

No Harold, you mean:

Christmas is too American
Hallowe'en is too American
Easter is too American

Grin
Reality · 06/10/2013 20:41

Americans are too American.

Teachers are all cunts.

Trolling 101.

That should cover it.

Pagwatch · 06/10/2013 20:48

I'm just going to hang around in 'god I'm marvellous'

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/10/2013 21:21

Since the ones on the bullying thread don't like people interacting with people who recognise each other, then the threads will be ever so dull.
'I think there's too much bullying on MN'
'I agree'
'So do I'
Ad nauseum.

HaroldLloyd · 06/10/2013 21:22

I think "god I'm marvellous" would be infiltrated very quickly by "I hate Mumsnet and all of its users"

I suggest a password.

You might even get some festive Americans in there. That won't do, they would be happy.

HaroldLloyd · 06/10/2013 21:23

Do I know you?
No
Good.

Have we met before?
No
Thank god

I spoke to you yesterday - go away
