Colour code zombie threads?

quoteunquote · 29/04/2013 19:10

I unwittingly contributed to a thread that had for some reason (best known to the person that did it),been resuscitated,

Could you add, a colour bar where the title is, or on the side, that indicates how old a thread is, blue for current, green a week old, yellow a month, orange six, and red year and beyond,

Then people would be instantly aware when joining in with a thread as to when it was started, as clearly a lot of us don't spot the year when on these threads, and some times people carefully choose threads that the day and month match to resuscitate.

Anyway it would be a simple way of stopping the annoying problem, and for people like the person who started the thread in the above link, they wouldn't have to have something they probably rather forget jump out at them, I hope the OP of that thread is happy now.

The warning will remain as long as the most recent post and/or the next most recent post are more than six months old

So if a spammer, reanimates it, the warning's still there for the next unsuspecting poster.

so as long as we don't get two in a row, the zombie threads shall die.

Zombie has now seen the Zombie thread alert. She has also checked her emails. MNHQ appear to have forgotten to contact her to negotiate the terms on which they may use her image.

Ahem.

It's great!

Can we get the cartoonist to draw new pics for the drop-down menus?

Oh, I've just posted on a zombie thread, sorry.

I thought I'd recycle it as it's in site stuff and I have the same problem as the original OP.

No, that's fine, Kidsarekarma. It's not forbidden to reanimate a dead thread. It's just that some folks were posting on them, unaware that it was long dead...

Phew Helen, thanks. I can see it would be unhelpful to post on some old threads.

I'm still waiting for a reply to my question on it

So, if a spammer reanimated a thread and posted twice the Zombie warning disappears?

I think I see a potential flaw in the system...

True. But spammers aren't known for their intimate knowledge of MN Talk features, eh?

(well as long as they're not reading this thread Smile)

What's wrong with resurrecting a zombie thread?!!!!

Nothing.

The problem was, some folks weren't realising it was a zombie thread - and were then annoyed at having taken the time to, say, answer someone's questions about potty-training their two-year-old when said two-year-old was now about eight.

Haha - oh yeah, I gotcha. Mind you, if its true that "there is nothing new under the sun", someone else could be in the exact same spot and benefit from the discussion?

Kind of nothing is ever wasted mentality Wink

I refer to a Zombie thread from a while back (this is quite a nice one).

The OP had posted about a buggy. Nobody answered her. Three years later she answered herself - despite the fact she hadn't namechanged in the meantime, but she hadn't noticed that she was answering herself. And her NN was so apt to her talking to herself after that length of time.

But that was harmless, albeit a bit daft.

Some of them, though, make you think 'WTF?'

Nothing really wrong with resurrecting this zombie thread. But it does indicate a slight flaw in the system. What happens when at least 2 people don't care that they're resurrecting a zombie thread?

ClayDavis Interesting that happened almost immediately the zombie system started.

I suspect colour coding was too complicated.
