mn hq, I would like to know why my thread was deleted

thread started last week about double standards between how men and women were treated on mn.

Yes there were some strong opinions voiced on it but afaik it ran to its conclusion and someone even started a new one.

So why was it deleted?

Just seems that a contrary POV (even though many, many people on mn agreed with it) is not welcomed? Hmm Angry not happy tbh - what happened to freedom of speech?

Wouldn't it be easier to email them directly?

DuelingFanjo · 28/08/2012 16:06

why not just contribute to the new one? Had the other one been filled up so no more could be posted?

wannaBe · 28/08/2012 16:15

the fact it filled up is not the point. it's the fact that it was deleted meaning that it no longer exists... thus meaning it could never be referred back to for e.g. next time someone makes this point and someone says "oh, I've never seen that before..." iyswim...

and why should I just email them? Why can't a public discussion be had over why threads are deleted - and whether there is in fact valid reasons for having done so, esp considering it ran to 1000 posts before it was.

Hello

It was deleted because, despite maxing out, we were still getting A LOT of reports about the personal attacks in there - and when we sat down to have a read of the whole thing, there were indeed so many personal attacks that (had we deleted them all individually) the thread would have looked like Gouda.

We do bend over backwards not to delete threads that are about site rules and culture because we don't want to look as though we're censoring debate - but I'm afraid sometimes we have to do it, and this was one of those times.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/08/2012 19:55

I said you should email them because your beef was with MNHQ, and I didn't see tha point of starting a thread to moan about it in public.

"there were indeed so many personal attacks that (had we deleted them all individually) the thread would have looked like Gouda."

Can I nick that phrase for future use? Grin

The problem is that you get strategic reporting in order to get a thread deleted.

extratoastwiththat · 28/08/2012 20:22

Right at the end of the thread, near the 1000th post, there was a sudden, completely off-the-wall and illogical offence-taking; followed by carnage. That sudden onslaught was enough to get the thread deleted. But was that its purpose?

Yama · 28/08/2012 20:35

I've seen threads where a poster has taken a disliking to the original post and then made numerous offensive posts so that the thread gets pulled. Not saying that this is what has happened here but it is a shame when many good points are made to pull a whole thread.

extratoastwiththat · 28/08/2012 20:36

Well, the facility for doing that is certainly distorting.

Obviously it's a deterrent for posting non-mainstream views.
