Deletions etc

So we've had a get together at MNHQ and we have come up with the following set of actions/proposals, following on from the previous thread:

  1. We will make more effort to be communicative and transparent. This will include the MNHQ duty person posting on the boards more to explain a deletion of a post or a thread and providing more info in cases where we have banned or suspended someone for trolling, so folks know that we are "doing something". We will also try to provide more specific message deleted info - ie more than just because it "breaks talks guidelines" (eg because it perpetuates rape myths etc) (NB this will take a bit of time because it involves tech)
  1. We will aim to be quicker to delete threads that have been or seem to have been started purely to inflame/goad, even if it means we occasionally might make a mistake. This is to avoid the goady threads where an OP is deliberately inflaming, leading to a lot of deleted responses. We will also suspend those who we suspect of being out to deliberately goad and make sure our guidelines reflect this.
  1. We will aim for a lighter touch approach to deletions where discussion is robust but lively and interesting and "attacks" are borderline/very slight/ 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.
  1. We will make sure everyone at MNHQ is aware of looking at the bigger picture - not just focus on the reported post - and is clear on what constitutes a personal attack - ie that it's ok to attack an opinion, not ok to attack a poster.
  1. Our policy on trollhunting remains not to tolerate it - so please don't do it, but please do report suspicions to us. That said, we will try to be more communicative on threads where folks suspect a troll - ie we are aware that some people have expressed doubts and we are looking into it/ we have checked this out and have no reason to believe this person is a troll/ we agree this person is not what they seem and have deleted the thread.
  1. We will hold regular chats/q&as about moderation issues and policy - monthlyish? - where we can have a good debate about any particular bugbear or issue and one of us will discuss policy and why we do what we do...

Out of interest we've checked the deletions thing and surprisingly the number of deleted messages seems to have dropped not risen year on year - even though traffic is up by more than 40%
(these include messages deleted from deleted threads - so one long thread = 1000 deletions)

Nonetheless we think people have raised some good points and we hope all trying the above will make the board better - if not we'll try something else Smile - thanks for all the input.

Please do post your thoughts/observations (disclaimer - I'm off out shortly so won't be around to respond tonight but will be back tomorrow)

Thank you Katie. I have always loved you.

usualsuspect · 30/05/2012 20:45

Yay, I just need an ignore poster option and a timed edit function and I might stop moaning

Hullygully · 30/05/2012 20:46

timed edit function?

usualsuspect · 30/05/2012 20:48

So if I cock up a post I can go and change it before the spelling grammar police get me.

I just posted YABNU instead of YANBU on a thread and it annoyed me Grin

See I missed an 'and' out in that post.

Hullygully · 30/05/2012 20:49

Ah. I like YABNU, it has a certain je ne sais quoi.

AnyFucker · 30/05/2012 20:50

Justine, thank you for taking the time to come up with those suggestions

I likes 'em, I think they could help and the idea of locking a thread

To top it off, could you reinstate ArtexMonkey please ?

usualsuspect · 30/05/2012 20:51

Yes ,I liked ArtexMonkey

CatitaInaHatita · 30/05/2012 20:52

This looks promising. Thanks Justine. I am very much in favour of your first point especially.

NinthWave · 30/05/2012 20:53

Yes reinstate ArtexMonkey please.

CatitaInaHatita · 30/05/2012 20:53

thanks for listening to opinions and responding

HecateTrivia · 30/05/2012 20:55

I like it. I'd really like to know as well, say, in the cases of a really nasty thread started by someone, whether they were a namechanging regular or someone who had signed up to cause trouble.

Mainly just cos I'm really nosy. If I'm being honest. Blush

SinicalSanta · 30/05/2012 20:56

Just add an ignore poster button and the proposals will be perfect.
We will have our own personal big red buttons, and we'll be all empowered and all. It will be like Big Society and not Nanny State.
And watch that report rate drop.

BIWItheBold · 30/05/2012 20:57

Grin @ MmeLindor

Brilliant Justine.

I have thought of the title of your next book:

"How to Talk so that Mumsnetters Will Listen"

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/05/2012 20:58

Your new guidelines sound perfect

However, yes to locking threads rather than deleting (pref with a message at the top saying this thread has been locked because xxx)

Thread locking could be permanent or temporary depending on reason for locking.

SwedishEdith · 30/05/2012 20:59

Jeremy Paxman corrected someone on Newsnight last week re less/fewer.

FrankWippery · 30/05/2012 21:08

Thank you Justine.

All we need now is the return of Artex. Please. Thank you.

HecateTrivia · 30/05/2012 21:13

Oh, you could REALLY do with locking old threads too. Or at least having a warning when you press post that you are about to post on a thread that was last posted on in 2003.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 30/05/2012 21:15

Yes please let Artex post again.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 30/05/2012 21:24

(DH is a less/fewer pedant and makes me all stabby and use the wrong one to annoy him )

MmeLindor. · 30/05/2012 21:27

LOL at "How to Talk so Mumsnetters Will Listen".

Would be a best-seller, I am sure. All our DHs could buy it.
