Is all the deleting because of the F4J thread?

CardyMow · 29/05/2012 23:16

I KNOW they threatened legal action and all that gubbins, and they were MORE than trigger happy when I posted on their fb page IN MY OWN NAME (just explaining how much of a support MN has been to me over the years), but this is RUINING MN.

Please, take MN back to how it used to be, I have been here on and off, under a previous reg no as well as this one, for 6/7 years now, and in the last few months, the number of deletions has jumped massively.

And, to be honest, the guff from MNHQ about not deleting disablist posts or comments seems rather, well, odd in the face of so many seemingly innocuous posts getting deleted.

Why is it ok to delete someone who uses the word 'disingenuous', yet you won't delete people who use the word r**ard, or those who hurl personal abuse at those of us with disabilities, all in the name of 'self-moderation' and education. Where's the self-moderation here?!

mn hq do now delete posts that where the R word is used, they are not so clear on the s word though Hmm

CardyMow · 29/05/2012 23:23

What about the threads where personal insults about posters with disabilities are made, though, 2shoes? They are left to stand, even when reported.

Now MN is starting to seem more like NM every day. If tickers turn up, I'm off!

2shoes · 29/05/2012 23:30

I know, I have been there, reported to be told......the thread will be left as it is educational,
i really think mn hq need someone on their team who is disabled or has a disabled child

CardyMow · 30/05/2012 00:52

I can't PM you, 2shoes, but you know me in my previous names. (Am on phone)

And it DOES seem to be only since the F4J thread, where the F4J poster/s levelled an accusation at MNHQ that the site wasn't moderated enough, and that they were going to seek legal advice.

I'm wondering if the trigger-happy deletions are due to this? I posted on the thread at the time (under my old name) that I hoped MN would ignore this and not change what is so well-loved about MN.

TBH, in a way, I hope I'm wrong, but the timing of all this leads me to fear I'm correct.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 30/05/2012 01:33

Where is the F4J thread please?

CardyMow · 30/05/2012 01:41

Long since deleted. It went poof, but it turned very nasty in the meantime, involved fb etc, I went on their fb page and posted NOTHING inflammatory, only that MN had been a great support to me, and that I had, in actual fact, been brought up by a LONE PARENT FATHER, and therefore had no axe to grind against them, and could they not try to make out that I did.

They deleted my comments (and repeatedly misquoted them, despite me C&P'ing my comments and their replies and my subsequent deletions from their fb page on the thread), and started whining to MNHQ about me and other posters that they were going to get legal advice about how MN should be more heavily modded...

And since then, MN has been more heavily modded, along the lines of what they were asking for...

Coincidence, MNHQ?

I recognise you Cardy, but can't place you.

MN definitely is deleting more posts than usual. I've been offline for a week and the difference is rather stark. There are loads of seemingly normal threads with random posts deleted, nothing makes sense.

It does seem to have eased in the last couple of days, hopefully that will sticj around.

Bof and Stratters are long gone though :(

SconeInSixtySeconds · 30/05/2012 02:33

It would seem a very co-incidental co-incidence Cardy. Sad

I stopped coming on for a bit after that whole malarkey - the whole site just seemed to be at war with itself ( I kept checking the moon thing just in case) but now I am feeling lonely again - here I am, and I am extremely sad that Bof and Stratters are gone.

They were both so lovely. And funny.

Sad
JarethTheGoblinKing · 30/05/2012 02:35

Crap on a stick... I go on holiday and everything has fallen apart (please PM if you know wtf is going on and can enlighten me?)

CardyMow · 30/05/2012 12:29

Even I stayed away for a while after the whole F4J thing, and I can't usually leave MN alone for 24 hrs even when practically dying of pneumonia in hospital!!

I just feel Sad that BoF and Stratters and Mortimer are gorn, and that MN doesn't seem like it used to.

Despite my reg no, I have actually been here a lot longer under a MUCH older name, but when I was without a PC for a year I forgot my old passwords AND old email address, so I re-regged. I've been here on and off for around 8 years here for Mouldies, SWMNBN and much more, and it's onlyt since the F4J thing that it really seems to have changed. I even posted on that thread a post pleading with MN not to bow to F4J's bullying behaviour and change the site, as it is a lifeline of support to me and many others on here.

If we wanted heavy moderation, and everyone being all fluffy and kind all the time, and never calling other posters on shitty 'ist' behaviour of any sort (non-inclusive list of disablist, mysoginist, rape apologist, benefit claimant-ist, racist), then there are OTHER Parenting sites we could have chosen to use.

The reason most of us here on MN STAY on MN is because we LIKE being able to call someone on their twuntish behaviour, and to lose that through heavier moderation will be to lose the very essence of what draws people TO MN.

OP posts:
2shoes · 30/05/2012 12:36

I do wish mn hq would be more proactive about disablist stuff, just reported a post with the R word in it, wonder if it will go.....

CardyMow · 30/05/2012 12:47

My bet is that it won't...Disablist comments are left to stand, remember...

OP posts:
2shoes · 30/05/2012 15:42

still there hours later!!! the person uses it twice ffs.
mn hq need to act

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/05/2012 15:46

I think MN are a bit snowed under with all the reports they are getting at the mo.

2shoes · 30/05/2012 16:40

always are when it comes to disablist stuff. we need a re report button so we go to top of the pile Wink

HelenMumsnet · 30/05/2012 18:51

Hello. Sorry to be late to this thread. 2shoes, that post has been deleted and you should have mail. Apols for the delay: we certainly haven't been as quick on this one as we'd have hoped.

CardyMow · 30/05/2012 20:12

2Shoes wasn't the only person who reported that though, I also reported, so why did it take so much longer for disablist remarks to be deleted than 'goading' remarks?

And do we REALLY have to resort to running to Mummy MNHQ each and every time, rather than calling someone out on being disablist? Older posters are waaaaay more likely to call a cunt spade a cunt spade than they are to constantly report, it's not what MN is for us - in the past I have only reported posts 2/3 times, for excessive offensiveness and twuntery, even personal attacks on me I argued against. It changes the whole air of MN to have to tell HQ each time rather than explaining how their comments were, well, WRONG.

And where's my BoF and Stratters fred I was posting on gorn? Has it gone poof too? WHY???? FFS?!

OP posts:
CardyMow · 30/05/2012 20:14

And still no actual answer as to whether this is all to do with the F4J bolleaux.

Because I was always told not to back down to bullies, to stand up to them and not change who you are for them - which, if the changes ARE down to the F4J poo, is exactly what would be happening, MNHQ changing MN because the bullies F4J told them to...

OP posts:
HelenMumsnet · 30/05/2012 20:45

Apols, CardyMow for not answering your Q: the answer is no, deleting has nothing to do with F4J and all that gubbins.

Justine has posted about our stance on deletions tonight. You can read it here.

And, just to be really clear, we are definitely in the business of deleting people who use the word r*tard etc. Although, on occasions, as today, it may take us a while to see the Report and act upon it.

And we're all for others explaining to the person who used that word why it's unacceptable to do so. We'd just prefer it if you did so without attacking them.

CardyMow · 30/05/2012 21:01

I don't get deleted THAT often. . Just sometimes, some people really ARE just utter cunts, and it's impossible to even explain to then how cuntish their post is, without also referring to them as cunts IYSWIM!

If the word R*ard is deletable, why aren't 'ln', 'Spz', 'He/she had an eppy fit'? (which I personally find VERY offensive, but usually just call the poster on, no need to report, I'm a big girl don'cha know.). There are other disablist remarks that are left to stand, which, while not attacking ONE person with that disability (i.e. not a 'personal attack'), ARE attacking a GROUP of people who have that disability, who happen to be protected in law by the Equality Act 2010, yadda yadda. An attack against a group of people who have a disability that you, a friend, or a member of your family suffer from CAN be construed as a personal attack. However, even on the VERY rare occasions that these get reported (and it's usually ONLY when they have been fucking disgustingly offensive), we all get the same email back that the comments will be left to stand in the name of educating people. Y'see, Disablist comments ARE treated differently.

And if it's NOT to do with F4J, why is it only since then that it seems to have gorn a bit trigger-happy with the deletions? I have been here for far too long, blooming Hotel California, this place quite a while, and though there was a change when I was pg with DS3 a year and a half ago (when I got a whole Fred deleted for calling it 'Cunting Mothercare', which would have gone undeleted in the past thinks of Cunting BT and Cunting Sainsbury's threads), it just seems to have gone into overdrive since the F4J stuff.

It just seems like a very co-incidental coincidence IYKWIM.

OP posts:
2shoes · 30/05/2012 22:03

i am sorry I get fed up with being told not to shout at people who use disablist language,
there are words that should not be allowed on mn. end off.

No, CardyMow, disablist posts are not treated differently. Our Talk Guidelines very clearly say that they will be deleted. It may have been true in the past that comments were left so people could "educate" but we've pulled our socks up since then that's definitely not the case now.

But we do rely on folks to report them to us, so we can delete them. There are over 30,000 posts on Mumsnet every day: we cannot possibly track every single one. Please don't assume that because a disablist post has not been deleted, we have seen it and decided to leave it; it's much much more likely that it hasn't been reported to us, so we don't know about it.

Re the deletions: they haven't gone up recently, in fact. If you check out Justine's post yesterday, you'll see they've actually gone down.

Alameda · 31/05/2012 10:38

It's just sexist language that's ok.

HRH2shoesofMn · 31/05/2012 11:49

so glad to hear that Helen.
hated being told that a disablist post would be left to educate!
