are we allowed to carry on discussing this?

Not blaming you for homoism Helen, just wondering aloud...

HelenMumsnet · 10/11/2011 17:16

@ChippingInNeedsSleep

HelenMumsnet - why is 'Fuck Off' a personal attack? It's an instruction.

Or maybe that's a question for the Friday Night peeps?

I don't think it's fair to let personal attacks stand just because they are pluralised. How would you feel as a parent of a child with SN, for example, if somebody says "All carers on benefits are scrounging bastards- I bet most of them are perfectly capable of work, and they're just lazy" etc etc? I'd take that pretty fucking personally actually. Likewise "Don't ask that on the feminism boards, they're proper mental there". It's incredibly rude, and a world away from saying "I had a real ding-dong on there once with a couple of them and I've felt nervous to post since".

But Maryz you can say "look, what you are saying is fucking ridiculous. I find your opinion crass and ignorant and I also think that your mother looks like the back of a donkey"

Wink

When I have been called terrible things, it can be tempting to retort back with personal insults and very often I have and those insults have been deleted. But it's far better I have found, to question their reasoning and be ultra ultra polite because nothing, I repeat, NOTHING infuriates them more when they are trying to wind you up by saying "I forgive your last comment as you are clearly not thinking or responding to my posts rationally".

Calling names just ends up in you being booted off and then they dance about going "oh look, you had that deleted because you're a bully". So hold your temper and win your argument.

TheRhubarb · 10/11/2011 17:27

Holy shit Helen, have you not noticed the huge kick off whilst you've been posting on here? Shock Someone's gotta stop what's happening here and quick!

LadyBeagleEyes · 10/11/2011 17:27

Can I just say, having heard all the arguments back and forth on this and other threads, I still want to get back to the point.
DBF should never have been banned and should be reinstated.
But from what I am seeing a bit of tough talking from a poster is no longer allowed.
Which is a great shame.

BecauseImWorthIt · 10/11/2011 17:28

ChippingIn

HedgeHop - a lot of people feel the same way. Unfortunately those with louder voices 'won'

I'm sorry, but there aren't any 'louder voices' - unless you count that of MNHQ/Justine.

It was their decision and absolutely nothing to do with people who posted on this or the other threads. It's an absurd accusation to make.

PaintYouByNumbers · 10/11/2011 17:29

Cor blimey, I go offline for 2 days and the shit hits the fan?

What on earth happened? I can't figure it out from the posts

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 10/11/2011 17:30

MNHQs voice is louder because their posts are blue/grey Grin

Hullygully · 10/11/2011 17:31

Chipping - out of interest, would you address the post I made earlier (below):

I think MNHQ are consistent.

  1. A personal attack is drawn to their attention by one or many
  2. A warning is given
  3. It persists
  4. A warning of a ban is given
  5. It persists
  6. Warning is carried through.

OMG I am Gina Ford.

The key point is that whether or not you think 5 was justified and whatever it consisted of is irrelevant

BecauseImWorthIt · 10/11/2011 17:34

... and LBE it's nothing to do with 'a bit of tough talking'. Have you read any of this and the other threads?! DBF was on a final warning. End of.

See ^ from Hully.

BecauseImWorthIt · 10/11/2011 17:36

And Grin @Rhubarb0

MmeLindor. · 10/11/2011 17:36

Can we adopt Helen as a normal MN poster please?

Go on, Helen. Shrug off the HQ badge, grab a glass of wine and get stuck into AIBU.

Are you trying to suggest that Helen isn't normal, Mme? I think that could be seen as a personal attack ...

GrimmaTheNome · 10/11/2011 17:39

often generalisations can be more insulting than an individual insult.

Yes - e.g. the way SGB can induce apoplexy but IME never insults an individual, and (AFAIK) rarely gets deleted.

HelenMumsnet · 10/11/2011 17:43

@Maryz

And you think she doesn't MmmLindor Shock?

Think it's fair to say that SGB has had a more than average number of deletions.

LeBOF · 10/11/2011 17:46

There's a log? Shock

HedgeHop · 10/11/2011 17:47

Hello, I am new and don't know you all. I don't have a dog but I'd looked at the dog pages and learnt a lot from DBF, and I'm sorry she's gone.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 10/11/2011 17:47

I think randomly bringing SGB into this could be considered a personal attack... Wink
