Can we have a cull of the topics list?

Discussed this on the AIBU thread in site stuff.

People get pissed off witg the fact that some topics are too quiet and so people post stuff in aibu when it shouldn't be there. That may be because loads of people hide topics which do not interest them, so some topics get no traffic.

Do we really need to have so many topics. For instance, could there not be a Pets topic. Is there reallt any need to dogs, cats, hamsters, chickens, horses, FISH to have their own topic really?

There are too many sub-topics I think and it is a pain in the arse I think.

Happy birthday Olivia!

Trills · 28/10/2011 09:08

Something you said on the other thread GetOrf (but it'sa topicy thing not an AIBUy thing) about people hiding topics so they get less traffic.

Not true at all.

If I hide a topic then I only hide topics that I wouldn't have posted on anyway.

I think it's better to post on, for example, Geeky Stuff and wait 2 hours and get one really good response, than to post "AIBU to not know what's wrong with my computer" and get 20 responses within 5 minutes, none of which are actually useful.

KatieMortician · 28/10/2011 10:06

What trills said absolutely. Geeky stuff is a great example: I had a problem with my iphone and got half a dozen really helpful and sympathetic responses.

If I'd posted on AIBU I'd have got a whole load of YABU to have an iPhone you bourgeoisie/twat/evil woman, there are starving children in Africa/selfish person how could you when I can't even afford to sweep leaves off the street to eat!

Not hugely helpful when all I want to do is reset the thing.

Well if that's all you had to worry about then YWBU Katie

Oh and happy birthday Olivia. It's mines on Tuesday - feel free to wish me many happy returns too. [hgrin]

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 28/10/2011 11:03

I wonder if I'm annoying GOML by polluting her thread with all these emoticons? [hgrin]
Bear

Sorry Blush

I struggle without them. I've actually typed loading="lazy" class="inline-flex mumsnet-emoji" alt="Grin" src="https://www.mumsnet.com/build/assets/grin-D7Eg_B6y.png"> on work emails before. Blush

I'll stop now.

ReaperView · 28/10/2011 16:46

RIght you've done it now posting that bloody bear!

There just needs to be some sense in the topics. Some things can be combined - ALL the money ones under one 'money' section.
Health - mental health, adult health, childrens health.
I'd find more but RL is RARGH and the list is ENORMOUS!!

C'mon HQ let me and GOML do it!

HelenMumsnet · 28/10/2011 17:08

Hello, hello. We're watching and absorbing and taking notes and things.

We'll see what we can do. There may be some complicated techy things that stop us doing some things but we'll def have a good look at the "rationalising" the ole topics list.

ReaperView · 28/10/2011 17:29

while you're looking, can you make a special ICKY section for the boil poppers etc

HelenMumsnet · 28/10/2011 17:34

Only if I don't have to see it, ReaperView

fastweb · 28/10/2011 17:36

Oh you've done it now Reaper.

They can sniff out any mention of boils and will soon be congregating under you, waving their placards demanding an exploding pus emoticon.

Grin

I can see it now

Health:

Childrens' health
Adult health
Mental Health
PusPorn (with specialist emoticons)
