Can we have a cull of the topics list?

GetOrfMo1Land · 27/10/2011 15:39

Discussed this on the AIBU thread in site stuff.

People get pissed off witg the fact that some topics are too quiet and so people post stuff in aibu when it shouldn't be there. That may be because loads of people hide topics which do not interest them, so some topics get no traffic.

Do we really need to have so many topics. For instance, could there not be a Pets topic. Is there reallt any need to dogs, cats, hamsters, chickens, horses, FISH to have their own topic really?

There are too many sub-topics I think and it is a pain in the arse I think.

They better not be. Angry

Root of all evil.

OTheHugeWerewolef · 27/10/2011 16:55

Nooooooooooooooooo! Not the 'like' button! Please no.

One of the reasons I like MN is the lack of cunting stupid noisy useless gimmicks like 'like' buttons.

fastweb · 27/10/2011 16:56

They better not be.

Root of all evil.

I take it this is not the moment for reviving my arguments in favour of a trial?

HettyAmaretti · 27/10/2011 16:56

A shorter cap on the number of posts in the Here Be Twats / Frothing Berserkers section would be good. 100 instead if 1000? Might actually help.

SheCutOffTheirTails · 27/10/2011 16:58

Agree that the Topics view is almost unusable because of the glut of subtopics.

I think the main thing is to merge quiet subtopics back into the main topic.

And be slower to accede to "can we have split-ends topic?" requests.

The split enders will jus have to hang out in haircare like the rest of us.

Also, Mary's point about long running support threads is a good one. At some point they become a different class of MN thing, and it would be worth thinking about giving them special status, eg not limiting to 1000 posts, automatically linking one to the next, allowing regular posters to do some moderation etc.

EdlessAllenPoe · 27/10/2011 16:58

don't you think MN can't know in advance which topics will take off - ?

feminism being the prime example where a new topic proved a hotbed of activity and opened a new discourse..

MumsNot was meant to be for people who aren't mothers....never really got any traffic..
being able to create a shortlist in my MN would surely be good enough.

and you leave 'in the doghouse' 'tack room' and 'fishnet' alone...the division of pets was one of the better ones ..

and get well soon - 5 weeks is a long time have some Thanks

ItsonlymeMrsDB · 27/10/2011 16:59

fastweb

NO ! Just no.

I can cope with the emoticons, but PLEASE NO 'like' button.

And no trial.

We are all adept enough at posting a quick Smile Grin or "I like that !" without the need for one.

I feel so strongly about NOT having a like button, I have started my own thread.

Please join in, in the spirit MN intended.

Thank you.

KatieMortician · 27/10/2011 17:03

You may be a bit behind Itsonlyme... there's been a thread, a spin-off thread and a survey all in the last month in Site Stuff.

overmydeadbody · 27/10/2011 17:04

In my day there were only about 6 topics, it was great. We still managed to talk about everything under the sun.

KatieMortician · 27/10/2011 17:04

I only check employment issues specifically. If I spot something work-y in legal, going back to work, redundancy or even chat or AIBU I'll head over but only if it's in Active Convos.

ItsonlymeMrsDB · 27/10/2011 17:08

Oh, sorry Katie.

I haven't been here for a while. Shite stuff in RL.

Ooops !

GetOrfMo1Land · 27/10/2011 17:08

lol at 'in my day'

'I remember during the wo-ar...'

Smile Just thought I'd tip you off in case it was a bit quiet on your thread. You wanna sit next to Maryz to discuss the like buttton Wink

DumbledoresGore · 27/10/2011 17:32

I agree - too many sub topics espesh.

I have recently joined another forum and so have an inkling of what it is like to come to a forum new. It took me a while to scroll down the new forum and get an idea of what topics there were to post in. I have been on MN for 7 years and still don't know the half of them! If there are so many they can't all be read on one page (as is the case now) then there are too many, imo.

SheCutOffTheirTails · 27/10/2011 17:50

In my day there were just two topics I Am Being Reasonable and I Am Being Unreasonable.

It all started to go wrong when topics with question marks were allowed.

punkinpie · 27/10/2011 17:54

I often look at the Topics list.

I like niche subjects.

Smile
RustyBear · 27/10/2011 17:58

I always check Geeky Stuff to see if there's anything I can help with - where would you put that so it doesn't get lost? They tend to be threads that need a quick answer.

I still think a My Topics facility, like on the app, would be useful, because if people could put their favourite topics on there and then flick through them, the topics would get a lot more traffic; at the moment it's a bit of a faff to check individual topics.

Slubberdegullion · 27/10/2011 18:01

Camping topic: LEAVE IT

Everything else pfft. I care not really, although I do like chat not being archived, so yeah, chat can stay [benevolent]

Oh and OTBT. That is awesome and genius mnhq.

Chat
All The Rest Of It (with a hide button)
Camping
OTBT

tia Smile

punkinpie · 27/10/2011 18:03

There is a little niche for everyone.

Slubberdegullion · 27/10/2011 18:03

mm

Come to think of it, that is exactly what I already have, with thanks to the handy customise button.

So my revised thoughts are mn:leave it.

Thanks again [flowers emoticon but with more greenery round the back]

DumbledoresGore · 27/10/2011 18:05

Camping and OTBT: the same thing, surely?

TethHearseEnd · 27/10/2011 18:08

There's a Fishnet?

I bet the discussions on there are brilliant- the same comments over and over again as nobody can remember what they just posted Grin

Slubberdegullion · 27/10/2011 18:12

Oh DG. Rude.

So what are the topics on the saga forum then, what with you being a regular member and all?
