can we have a 'LIKE' button on every posters post??

sometimes i don't wish to comment but want to acknowledge that i like a mumsnetter's post or response. i keep going to click the like button, as on facebook but inevitably find that it is not there!!

OP posts:

At the moment all posts have equal value.

gramercy · 10/10/2011 15:04

Can you imagine in RL having a discussion with a group of people and one or two of them just interjecting with "Like" every so often? Bizarre.

BertieBotts · 10/10/2011 15:12

Nightshade, I read every post on a thread, not just those from "bigger" mumsnetters. I tend to skip over the poster names and read the content. I think most people do this.

I like "like" buttons. In certain situations.

  • Threaded discussions, especially those which you can expand/collapse split off comment threads. Livejournal could do with a "like" or "thanks" button to save the times when you expand a comment thread just to find it's 20 people saying "This!".
  • Discussion boards where the focus is to find the best response or solution, often one which is objective. This works for yahoo answers, and to a certain extent for moneysavingexpert.com. I don't think it works here because too many of the discussion topics are subjective, and it matters not how many people agree that "You should try controlled crying, it worked with mine" if the OP doesn't want to use that approach.
  • Sites where things are offered for download - user-created things (e.g. add-ons for games), not necessarily illegal. Saves resurrection of old threads for just a "Thanks this is great!" type post.
  • Boards which encourage users to judge responses, e.g. to display the "best" - works well on review sites (ie "sort by most helpful") and sites like B3ta image challenge/question of the week where the best voted are shown on one page so you don't have to sift through the boring or rubbish ones.
  • Sites where the ratio of absolute idiots to normal people is unfeasibly high. E.g. youtube comments. I hope to god this doesn't become required here.

Yeah. That's pretty much it.

BertieBotts · 10/10/2011 15:14

Threaded discussions as opposed to linear discussions that we have here, I mean (in case people aren't familiar with the different terms) - for an example of threaded discussion see the site SunnilyEnough linked earlier.

FetchezLaVache · 10/10/2011 15:23

Can we just have a poll on this? It seems to me there should either be likes or there shouldn't, no point in any kind of opt-out system.

nightshade · 10/10/2011 15:25

but mumsnet isn't real life discussion, gramercy! and posts are not of equal value!

i wouldn't expect to be cursed at and shouted down with such vigour in real life! i also wouldn't expect such a tide of social correctness and lack of individual opinion.

and to bring out the old chestnut, posts are generally only of value if you are a loud, opinionated old poster of three generations back, member, or if you are outrageously witty!

in the most, posts that i would like to like, are generally ones that don't get positive feedback, are generally ignored and sometimes are 'easy listening', not fashionable or current but akin to my own viewpoint. i do not view it as point scoring or a popularity contest.

i am too old, cynical and lazy to constantly fight for my own individuality, this post probably being the longest i have ever enterd into, howver, i would still like to be able to join in!!

no no!

how depressing some posters will feel if they get lots of 'red' arrows a la daily mail

still would be another reason for me to finally stop visiting mn i suppose Grin

CauldronsTrulyReign · 10/10/2011 15:34

Justine.

Time to get a pill out.

Smile
CauldronsTrulyReign · 10/10/2011 15:35

Arse.

Justine.

Time to get a poll out.

VampiresWearBlackVelvet · 10/10/2011 15:36

Yeah Justine - crash the pills Grin

MarginallyNarkyPuffin · 10/10/2011 16:01

Maybe a DailyMail button would help?

SuePurblybilt · 10/10/2011 16:06

No, please no. Why would we ever need to be more like the DM or FB? I am here because it is not FB.

Sure fire way to kill conversation and the Thin End of the Wedge.

Wormshuffler · 10/10/2011 16:09

PinotScreechio · 10/10/2011 16:10

It's a fucking stupid idea.

People will fuss like tarts if their perceived witticisms don't get the credit they think they deserve.
It will encourage wankfrippery on threads by people trying to out-like each other.
It will result in yet more accusations of Royalty and kissing-up.
People should post honestly without the temptation to appeal to the masses - don't underestimate how alluring a multitude of "likes" will be. Honesty and uncomfortable truths will be fewer and further between.

Just an absolute, resounding "NO".

No benefit, whatsoever. If you want your ego stroked, piss off. This is MN - you know, the one with the swearing and the biscuits.

FetchezLaVache · 10/10/2011 16:11

PinotScreechio, at the risk of going against the very ethos of your post, that was quite wonderful.

CauldronsTrulyReign · 10/10/2011 16:14

Ahha, Fetchez, I realise I crossposted with your fantastic idea.

I should try to be a refresher.

Then I could have just liked your post.

Hmm
doesntfitin · 10/10/2011 16:16

Its about time MN came out of the dark ages.

ExitPursuedByaBear · 10/10/2011 16:17

No, no and thrice no.

And what Pinot said.

Trills · 10/10/2011 16:17

fuss like tarts

+1

SuePurblybilt · 10/10/2011 16:18

I may have to post No on the hour, every hour, until we all promise to stop talking about this nonsense forever.

LowLevelWhingeing · 10/10/2011 16:18

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.

THE END

_

BrainSurgeon · 10/10/2011 16:19

I don't think the 'like' button would "encourage wankfrippery on threads by people trying to out-like each other" (blimey Pinot I could not have written that myself in a million years).

I think we should try it Blush
