can we have a 'LIKE' button on every posters post??

nightshade · 10/10/2011 12:31

sometimes i don't wish to comment but want to acknowledge that i like a mumsnetter's post or response. i keep going to click the like button, as on facebook but inevitably find that it is not there!!

OP posts:

toosoontoosoon - "it will minimise posting."

Let's wait for a trial and see. I think there are plenty enough posters who write and will continue ad nauseam to put forward their views, whether they click a button as well, or not.

"Are you trying to make MN smaller? Reduce debate to a black and white pre-defined choice?"

Hardly. I've never started one of these threads, but would prefer to see it as an option, than be vetoed untested, as some would prefer.

I've never been keen on Facebook (which sometimes gets thrown in to describe those in favour of such an option as being a bit immature or 'thick') but have seen the growth of 'thumbs up' 'thumbs down' options on a number of websites, some media and others technical forums, and have not myself noticed any decline in discussion - and debate certainly doesn't get reduced to 'black and white' choices.

NetworkGuy · 12/10/2011 01:27

someone posted "completely fucking stupid and pointless and change for change's sake. We really don't want this."

Is that the Royal "we" ?

I don't think the subject would have been raised at intervals if everyone was against it Grin

NetworkGuy · 12/10/2011 01:51

in another post "Clicking 'like' is lazy and kills conversation."

Can anyone point to a forum where there's just one post with lots of likes and dislikes and no follow-up comments whatsoever ? I doubt it.

Remember this is an optional extra to posting views, and I think plenty of people have strong views, and unfortunately, sometimes won't hesitate to post them!

NetworkGuy · 12/10/2011 05:35

Someone wrote "simply, the truly brilliant posts stand for themselves,"

Indeed, and no one is asking you to take any notice of any "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" counters. You are quite able to carry on, oblivious to anyone else choosing to acknowledge a brilliant / funny / deep, or (thumbs down) a truly obnoxious posting.

You carry on your way, but please don't assume that no-one else would want this facility, nor that it would in any way affect the "status quo" as it seems to me the idea is to make is optional so as not to offend those who would wish to veto such a facility.

PureBloodMuggle · 12/10/2011 06:13

iif there is going to be a like button can we also have a 'wally' button and a 'that made me roll my eyes' button

possibly might have to rethink the name of the last one

JacquesDerrida · 12/10/2011 07:35

' (which sometimes gets thrown in to describe those in favour of such an option as being a bit immature or 'thick') '

Has anyone really said FB users are 'thick'? I must have missed that - I never said it or meant it. I've gone to great pains to explain this.

'Can anyone point to a forum where there's just one post with lots of likes and dislikes and no follow-up comments whatsoever ? I doubt it'

Yes, LOADS, honestly. I will try and find you some. I've seen it so many times. It's stifling. A 'like' button adds nothing..it doesn't make for good reading OR debate.

It can only be useful for causing hotheadedness and controversy.

I think it's really foolish.

CalatalieSisters · 12/10/2011 09:35

I'd like a FFS button.

Did you know that if you use the Merriam Webster online dictionary you get the "Like" option for every single definition of every single word in the English language?

I liked the word "Like".

Facebook's "Like" is just s device to get your company/movie/dictionary/whatever linked to on FB. Not really convinced it has much point here -- unless it will be a means for promoted items in the products thread to get extra promo?

ScrambledSmegs · 12/10/2011 10:15

I hate the 'like' buttons on FB. Why not just comment? It's nice to read a comment, it's a bit 'meh' to have a bunch of people 'like' your post but not actually respond to it. I sometimes wonder why they bothered.

So for that reason, no thanks. I'd rather post.

BrainDeadSurgeon · 12/10/2011 10:58

I'd like a FFS buton too. I think.
Whatever it is (and if there will be anything) I'm sure it won't be literally "LIKE". As I said before, I'm sure MNHQ would come up with somthing more original / witty / specific to MN

BrainDeadSurgeon · 12/10/2011 11:00

Just for the record - I use the FB "like" buttons to express just that: that I like something. If I have more to add, I'll comment. But if I look at a photo or status and what springs to mind is "I like that" or "that's nice", then I'll use the like button!!!!

JacquesDerrida · 12/10/2011 11:15

FB is an entirely different format.

It's like a gallery, a snapshot, even the statuses and comments are almost a snapshot of life.

It's not meant to be conversational. It's bitesize. It's tokenistic.

MN is about getting in there, it's about tearing up theories, turning stuff on its head, taking everything to bits (yes deconstructing it if you like)

a 'like' button is facile and inappropriate.

JacquesDerrida · 12/10/2011 11:17

I mean in this context it is tokenistic.

et Il n'y a pas de hors-texte

MarshaBrady · 12/10/2011 11:26

Agree with the clever JacquesDerrida. The whole premise is meant to be conversation, debate and discussion.

Plus light-hearteded frippery. But still always engaging with others.

JacquesDerrida · 12/10/2011 11:28

I may be sadly deceased but I still sure as hell have a point.

MarshaBrady · 12/10/2011 11:29

hell yeah.

Blackduck · 12/10/2011 12:10

S'wot I said further up/down the thread...it's all about purpose of site....like buttons work in some places, but not convinced they would here....I am with JD (although everytime I read that name it brings back horrible memories of my undergrad days...:) )

CalatalieSisters · 12/10/2011 12:20

Si tu veut le hors-texte, tu dois allez au "Tack Room" topic #franglais

JacquesDerrida · 12/10/2011 12:22

Sorry Blackduck Grin

Calatalie, je vais avoir un look

JacquesDerrida · 12/10/2011 12:26
