Hello.

We've had a few people asking us to extend to everyone MNHQ's Quote function (you know, the thingie where we can quote another person's post in our posts).

But we have also clocked a fair few folk who would rather Talk stayed as it is and didn't have a Quote function on threads.

So we have opened up a little poll to find out what the true picture is.

So what do you think? To quote or not to quote?

Do please feel free to discuss the issue with other Mumsnetters here on this thread, and please do vote and help us decide. (We'll leave this up for a good few days to make sure everyone gets a chance to contribute their tuppence ha'penny.)

NB: as it involves a bit of Tech work, we won't roll out the Quote option unless there is a clear majority in favour of it and, if there were, we would most likely test it in a specific topic (such a Chat) before putting it everywhere - just to check it wouldn't cause havoc.

Thanks v much, MNHQ

Nonononononnono.

It would be boxes within boxes within boxes, with people quoting massive chunks just to say "I agree" and not even bothering to bring out the exact bit that they were agreeing with.

TrillianAstra · 17/09/2011 13:52

ChippingIn how very dare you suggest that I would be so rude as to tell off MNHQ?! Shock

NetworkGuy · 17/09/2011 14:41

Yes, on balance, I doubt the majority would bother to trim, and it could get to be boxes within boxes, and look awful.

allhailtheaubergine · 17/09/2011 14:45

Networkguy I wouldn't say you "shot my argument down in flames" - you just added your thoughts to the thread the same as everyone else is doing, mostly in a non-firey plunge of death sort of a way :)

Pinot · 17/09/2011 14:49

Indeed allhail. Your argument is up and unflammable. So there.

NetworkGuy · 17/09/2011 14:52

This isn't the thread to argue about the pros and cons of 'like' - I wasn't intending to derail the thread is all.

Argue your case on the other thread if you wish, but there are plenty of examples where 'thubs up / 'thumbs down' operates on media web sites without any apparent reduction of argument (ummmm...) 'discussion'

LOL Pinot, perfectly flammable :)

NetworkGuy · 17/09/2011 14:55

Also, read more closely, and you'll see I said "can be shot down"... :)

TrillianAstra · 17/09/2011 14:59

No, but this is (for NetworkGuy)

weevilswobble · 17/09/2011 15:08

No from me. Because mostly i talk bullshit and prefer for it to disappear into the ether.

LaBag · 17/09/2011 15:43

Yes please - long overdue (but people don't like change do they?)

BerryLellow · 17/09/2011 15:50

Oh I don't know. I like a change now and again, but this wouldn't be a good one.

Sirzy · 17/09/2011 15:54

I like the idea. At least that way you would be able to tell who was saying what has been quoted rather than seeing a line from what someone had said in bold but having to then trail back to find out who said it.

TrillianAstra · 17/09/2011 16:18

I'd like to commend you on the "I don't care" button :)

HoneyPablo · 17/09/2011 16:23

I would love a quote facility and so have voted yes.

it's a definite NO from me.

and as for the proposed "hide poster" option - no to that too. I forsee endless posts declaring "I'm going to hide you now so NER" or "what did so and so say that time? I had hidden her during a fit of pique but I am now dying to know what she said after I flounced have now calmed down and forgiven her"

ImYourDaughter · 17/09/2011 21:34

okay I voted.
Please can someone help me out, I've only just joined the site and would like to know how to post a question.. I can't work it out!

I see I'm in the minority, thinking this is a good idea.

At the moment, people post a response and then (on fast moving threads) post another response saying who their first response was responding to.

Surely you don't all think that is better than just having the possiblity of quoting the hilarious/bonkers/offensive comment that you want to reply to?

bosch · 17/09/2011 23:03

Aah but wouldn'twe all be more, well, selective, than that?

Plus tech would warn people about server capacity or some techish reason not to over-quote...

However, I've not seen netmums for years so defer to your wider knowledge...

bosch · 17/09/2011 23:06

sorry (cringe) should have read: wouldn't we (and relax)
