POLL NOW CLOSED. Would you like to have the option to Quote posts on Talk threads (like MNHQ can)? Please come and cast your vote

Hello.

We've had a few people asking us to extend to everyone MNHQ's Quote function (you know, the thingie where we can quote another person's post in our posts).

But we have also clocked a fair few folk who would rather Talk stayed as it is and didn't have a Quote function on threads.

So we have opened up a little poll to find out what the true picture is.

So what do you think? To quote or not to quote?

Do please feel free to discuss the issue with other Mumsnetters here on this thread, and please do vote and help us decide. (We'll leave this up for a good few days to make sure everyone gets a chance to contribute their tuppence ha'penny.)

NB: as it involves a bit of Tech work, we won't roll out the Quote option unless there is a clear majority in favour of it and, if there were, we would most likely test it in a specific topic (such a Chat) before putting it everywhere - just to check it wouldn't cause havoc.

Thanks v much, MNHQ

I really wouldn't want the option of quoting or hide or agree/disagree. Its one of the things I love about MN. The others forums I've seen are not as user friendly and I find the quoting of other posters makes a thread difficult to follow.

Bohica · 16/09/2011 17:48

A no from me, what if your have the highlighted op option? would your post then be in your chosen colour and the op's chosen clour?

Yes, threads here move very fast and you get the Hmm face and "was that for me?" if you comment on something. Mostly people don't bother to quote and just reply, not realising that there are now 17 posts in between yours and the one you were replying to.

And then you get people giving you a row for putting the poster's name in bold. Other forums cope with quoting perfectly well, why are we so awkward different?

"Noooooooo!

Quoting is infuriating. People just quote a post in order to add 'lol' at the bottom and then the next poster does the same and then its just an unreadable mess of quotes upon quotes. I hate sites with quoting and it would actually put me off MN. I like the way MN looks, its clean and uncluttered and that makes the content more meaningful IMO."

lol

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 16/09/2011 18:22

No no no! It would be a baaad thing. Copy and paste with a couple of quotation marks does the job nicely if it's ever necessary.

Tenebrist · 16/09/2011 18:26

ooh, the againsts are way in the lead at the moment. Goody.

"Other forums cope with quoting perfectly well, why are we so awkward different?"

expensive pants cos we is clever, innit. And we can c+p all by ourselves.

CaptainMartinCrieff · 16/09/2011 18:37

You can't cut and paste on the app and therefore quoting is virtually impossible. So for the app alone, I vote yes!

ExpensivePants · 16/09/2011 18:38

But no one does!!!

CaptainMartinCrieff · 16/09/2011 18:39

Well I WOULD vote if the link actually worked on the app! Angry

TeaSippingPterodactyl · 16/09/2011 18:41

Nay,nay and thrice nay!

ChippingIn · 16/09/2011 18:42

Thankfully the 'No's' are in the lead by a good margin!!

No for all the reasons people have already stated.

ExpensivePants - there are reasons some of us don't post on 'other sites' - this is one of them! :)

MNHQ have you put threads in AIBU & Chat??

MmeLindor. · 16/09/2011 18:45

It's a NO from me, I am afraid [simoncowellemoticon]

Pointless, clutters up the thread and makes MN like any other forum.

I like MN because it is different.

ExpensivePants · 16/09/2011 18:47

You're just all afraid of change. It's like being on a forum with my mum Wink

Pinot · 16/09/2011 18:48

Lissie I always said you've got exceptional taste Wink

Sevenfold · 16/09/2011 19:05

no thanks

TarquinGyrfalcon · 16/09/2011 19:28

Noooo - makes threads cluttered and messy.
I lov the fact that on MN everything is clean and clear. I also love that fact that it doesn't show you how many people have viewed a thread - nothing worse than a thread you have started that has had 888 views and no bugger has answered.

MissTinaTeaspoon · 16/09/2011 19:45

I've voted (no) but the link doesn't work on mn mobile or the app.

FellatioNelson · 16/09/2011 19:49

On another site I use people quote whole reams of boring stuff just to show who they are responding to, so you have to see everything twice. It's very tedious. Also I quite like the fact that MNHQs posts are easy to spot as they are almost always quoting someone and responding to it. I anyone can quote left right and centre then please make sure MNHQs is a different colour.

I don't mind in theory, it would be easier than C&P, but that lack of effort may lead to its misuse by tedious people.
