POLL NOW CLOSED. Would you like to have the option to Quote posts on Talk threads (like MNHQ can)? Please come and cast your vote

Hello.

We've had a few people asking us to extend to everyone MNHQ's Quote function (you know, the thingie where we can quote another person's post in our posts).

But we have also clocked a fair few folk who would rather Talk stayed as it is and didn't have a Quote function on threads.

So we have opened up a little poll to find out what the true picture is.

So what do you think? To quote or not to quote?

Do please feel free to discuss the issue with other Mumsnetters here on this thread, and please do vote and help us decide. (We'll leave this up for a good few days to make sure everyone gets a chance to contribute their tuppence ha'penny.)

NB: as it involves a bit of Tech work, we won't roll out the Quote option unless there is a clear majority in favour of it and, if there were, we would most likely test it in a specific topic (such a Chat) before putting it everywhere - just to check it wouldn't cause havoc.

Thanks v much, MNHQ

No, no, no!

But I would like to be able to "-" and hide posts and posters.

flatbellyfella · 18/09/2011 07:40

No from me,+ everything the queen said.

Sofabitch · 18/09/2011 08:19

No

savoycabbage · 18/09/2011 08:32

No,no,no. I read the threads as if we were all talking to each other. It would be ruined! Ruined I tell you.

AurraSing · 18/09/2011 09:16

I'm another one that doesn't like change. Grin

Also, I thought there were thousands of us on here - so how come there isn't even 300 votes. Is it just 200 members with lots of usernames?

LaBag · 18/09/2011 14:46

Yes, yes, yes. This forum needs a kicking into touch.

NetworkGuy · 18/09/2011 15:08

AurraSing - weekends are often said to be quieter than weekday (evenings) as it is often family time, but I suspect there are many who rarely look in 'site stuff' unless there has been something puzzling them about up/downtime or there seems to be a problem with adverts / finding threads / font+colour aspects / their iPhone is messing about :)

Rather like the other web sites, the 'writers' are massively outnumbered by the 'readers' (aka lurkers). One of the things one sees now and again is a poster saying 'have been a member for years but XYZ's comments forced me to post as I feel so strongly about ABCD'.

Being a member, posting, or voting online, will always be from a minority (unless you cannot even view contents without being a member). That minority is self-selecting - ie the can be bothered people.

Sometimes people can be tempted into more interactivity if participating is easy... voting is easy, but spotting the post inviting one to post no so easy, perhaps, among all that is on MN. (I would argue the same about some other aspects, that gently encouraging participation in simple ways would mean there'd be likelihood of actually posting on a different occasion.)

loopylou6 · 18/09/2011 16:18

No with knobs on. Although I do like the like/dislike thingy

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 18/09/2011 17:03

"No", from me too, for all the reasons above.

I'd like to see a 'reported by

MysteryToyBlockedTheToilet · 18/09/2011 18:26

That would defeat the object of changing names to be anonomous tho, ie for sensitive subjects.

Can we get a spell checker before we post thingy??!

FromGirders · 18/09/2011 19:09

No, I don't think we particularly need a quote option.
I would like a hide poster option though, please.

FromGirders · 18/09/2011 19:10

And I'm loving the colour customisation - so I'm not just voting against change :)

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 18/09/2011 20:30

no don't like the idea but if tech is playing with new things I very much like the idea of a like button.
It would be easier than me typing, "I agree with buttonbottom"

don't know if this has already been mentioned but I recon you will need another poll if this ges ahead. One to determine if the response to quoted text should go before or after. Wink

TreeHouses · 18/09/2011 22:09

Even if it were possible to quote parts of posts, my vote would still be no. I mean, how difficult is it really to c+p?

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 18/09/2011 22:30

I don't think there is any need. So, I'm voting no

AitchTwoOh · 18/09/2011 22:31

nah, i don't think it's necessary.

Maryz - there was an earlier thread (well, several, actually) concerning Thumbs Down aka Like/Dislike (where plenty of support was shown, otherwise it would not be raised by members) so please don't assume Trillian and others will change views to being against the idea that easily

NetworkGuy · 18/09/2011 22:42

DuelingFanjo :- to determine if the response to quoted text should go before or after

Oh dear. I had forgotten MN allowed people to 'flip' the order of posts and see them 'most recent first'. Would have said it should obviously be in chronologic order with comments added afterwards (as even Microsoft eventually got that right after a lot of complaints) but as MN allows the opposite order...

No, surely nobody would be daft enough to request they could type their comments before a quoted piece

Maryz - as if we ... cannot scroll up and down and see what people have said

if you get to a thread with 600 posts in, it can be awkward finding something someone has said... and if using a mobile phone at the time, almost impossible :)

NetworkGuy · 18/09/2011 22:47

I'm no fan of either Facebook or Twitter, for the record, but I've seen +/- counts on many sites and don't think it will have as dramatic (negative) effect as some believe.

Given so many 'regulars' like to 'have their say' even if they are totally wrong I cannot imagine the number of posts being reduced by even 5%
