Hello.

We've had a few people asking us to extend to everyone MNHQ's Quote function (you know, the thingie where we can quote another person's post in our posts).

But we have also clocked a fair few folk who would rather Talk stayed as it is and didn't have a Quote function on threads.

So we have opened up a little poll to find out what the true picture is.

So what do you think? To quote or not to quote?

Do please feel free to discuss the issue with other Mumsnetters here on this thread, and please do vote and help us decide. (We'll leave this up for a good few days to make sure everyone gets a chance to contribute their tuppence ha'penny.)

NB: as it involves a bit of Tech work, we won't roll out the Quote option unless there is a clear majority in favour of it and, if there were, we would most likely test it in a specific topic (such a Chat) before putting it everywhere - just to check it wouldn't cause havoc.

Thanks v much, MNHQ

No please for the love of god no! It is so very very annoying and I will stop using mumsnet if this starts happening.
Actually, on 2nd thoughts.......Grin

SybilBeddows · 16/09/2011 20:17

I'm in favour of quoting.
My ideal would be no special function, just people doing it properly with correct punctuation where necessary - people are always cutting and pasting but not putting quotation marks in. But that's not going to happen so it would have to be a special thingy that changes the colour.

hormonesnomore · 16/09/2011 20:27

Done. And I voted no - MN is lovely and clean - please don't clutter it up.

I wouldn't mind a 'like' button though

CaptainNancy · 16/09/2011 20:41

I love that you have a 'really don't care' option!

PPPop · 16/09/2011 21:16

No. I like my mumsnet simple, just like me.

faverolles · 16/09/2011 21:24

I can't get to the link, but NOOOOOO!!!

Please no.

If I wanted to quote I'd go to netmums.

NetworkGuy · 16/09/2011 21:45

Think that cut and paste encourages more selective quoting and not knowing what MNHQ sees (eg can you delete portions of the text you are quoting? nearly every quote I've seen appears to be the whole of the original post just regurgitated, and if so, that's near to useless/senseless)... so it depends on whether you can edit what is quoted in my view.

When will you carry out a vote, please, on a like/dislike option... discussion was started months ago, someone from MNHQ seemed to want to see further discussion, but the thread lays dormant without any MNHQ attention even when it is gently nudged back into view...

"although not sure there's an orangey option"

Has anyone at MNHQ seen the recent thread asking for more colour options (would help some with colour blindness type problems, being able to choose contrast colours if a bit more flexibility was available... if not, please visit *> this site here

Nah, but thanks for asking.

GoingForABlog · 16/09/2011 21:56

No, please don't.

YesYes · 16/09/2011 22:09

Cannot get to the poll but no no and no

I honestly think it will just fan the fires during the troll hunts 'you said this, explain yourself' etc etc.

Also think it will clutter the darn place up I love the basic-ness of mumsnet

CauldronsTrulyReign · 16/09/2011 22:18

How does he do that?

Confused

NG are you sleeping with someone who gives you special posting powers?

NetworkGuy · 16/09/2011 22:22

If only.... I hope suspect most at MNHQ are happily married. :)

CauldronsTrulyReign · 16/09/2011 22:23

Quoting function is wankfrippery of the highest order.

No, nope, noswers.

And like button is the end of decent converstion.

Either of those arrive and I'm off like an off-button.

Aslo.

While you're here MNHQ.

I'd like to proplose something.

Please may Techs have their own colour? They work so hard at all hours of the day and we never hear them complain, and apparently they have no access to windows or nice tablecloths in the shed. It would just be a small recognition of their moral fibrosity and fortitude.

Smile

It's a yes from me (in the style of Simon Cowell)

LeBOF · 16/09/2011 22:30

I remember when Vinny broke mumsnet and turned it green.

BaronessBomburst · 16/09/2011 23:19

No, no, NO!!!! Someone will suggest tickers next, and avatars, and glitter, and it will be half-term and we'll be overrun with trolls who vote yes, and we'll have morphed into Nethuns and I like MN being Latin, sweary, and drunk bum-sex. with the odd bit of parenting advice

StealthPolarBear · 16/09/2011 23:26

I see a quoting thing as a tech feature to enhance the functionality of the board. Not in the same league as tickers. More like the colour coding which MN sneaked in without consultation a few months ago and I ahve found really useful.

(Sorry MNHQ, only joking, I do realise you are allowed to make decisions without asking us first :o)

hmm yes I suppose. But I quite often find myself wanting to quote so I can say "I agree with your first point, when when you talk about...I don't really understand what you're getting at". Without quoting, I either have to do it myself, or just ad lib in the post which often leads to crossed wires. And if the thread is vaguely argumentative they will pick up on the slightest detail I misremembered instead of addressing the points I am making ("but your whole argument is wrong because you thought I said the man was wearing GREEN shorts, they were in fact ORANGE" etc)

I was completely Confused by green-short-nigglers there - thought this was new terminology I wasn't aware of :o Hopefully it will become common usage on MN for someone who disagrees with a pointless detail and scales that up to assume they are right in the entire argument.

StealthPolarBear · 16/09/2011 23:40

"I just looked at MSE to make sure it still annoys me - it does. People often quote someone in the post that directly precedes theirs, so the thread could end up being twice as long.

I do c&p sometimes, and use quote marks. I can see why that's useful.

I bet the green-short-nigglers will find something else to niggle about, but I do see what you mean."

And yes, iswym about quoting the most recent post - so duplicating what the thread does itself by virtue of being a thread

oooh going off the idea

(d'you like what I did there? :o)

CauldronsTrulyReign · 16/09/2011 23:43

Stealth.

Are you drinky?
