Regular MN users who don't pay subs...

Just wondering why?

Have you forgotten, can you not afford it, do you just think it's not necessary?

Not trying to force anyone to pay, just curious

(I am a subscriber btw!)

I do think one of the problems though is that forums are ten a penny on the internet, hardly any of them require subscription costs (of course, a great many of them are funded by companies, and a great many more don't have the numbers we do to make running costs so high). People tend to view the internet as "free" (or at least free after they've paid their bill to their ISP).

And tbh, if you're like me and come straight to the boards without going to the homepage, the fact there's subs at all can be easily overlooked...

PrettyCandles · 02/11/2005 14:30

I used to pay. Felt it was very good value, especially when you compare it with magazines and toddler groups, but now that the site carries so much advertising and marketing I don't feel so motivated to do so. Does it really need our subs? Is it not profitable with all the books, ads, TV shows etc? Especially when you consider how the books and shows would never have existed without our (non-monetary) contributions.

wish I had the guts for Hunkers answer. I don't really want to pay. Not good with voluntary payments. I mean there is lots of advertising isn't there. And I say either charge in or don't really. also could not bring myself to send a card number winging around cyber space, could send a cheque I suppose

Can't afford a sub now.... just bought a big house!

cupcakes · 02/11/2005 14:39

god - my card number is permanently flying round cyber space!

Feel I ought to address the not paying subs when I objected so strongly to the Milupa advertising thing.

I find Milupa's whole method of advertising deeply unpleasant - and MN were, IMO, running an advert that was illegal. Advertising formula is illegal and undermines breastfeeding (by perpetuating the "bottlefeeding is the norm" culture - and before anyone jumps up and down, I'm not saying bottlefeeding is abnormal ).

Anyone who has read my posts on the breast/bottlefeeding threads knows that I am a staunch supporter of helping women who want to breastfeed do so. I know that I have helped at least one woman breastfeed by posting on here, because she's said so.

To me, that is worth more than the five or ten or twenty pounds I'd contribute to MN's coffers.

And I still maintain that a business looking to stay afloat in a commercial world should be able to do so without pressuring for subs (and not saying MN put the pressure on, because they don't, but some MNers do), or taking adverts from companies with dubious advertising histories.

DelGirl · 02/11/2005 15:08

I've sent subs twice this year but my name's not actually on the list. Not sure why?

Lizzylou · 02/11/2005 15:09

Good for you, HM.

gingerbear · 02/11/2005 15:10

I have no idea if I am up to date or not. I try to pay regularly though. Need formal reminder from Boney M....I mean MN HQ.

flamesparrow · 02/11/2005 15:11

My reasons are pretty much the same as HMs list.

Would love to, can't afford to, feel incredibly guilty that I use it so much yet don't contribute .

hunkermunker · 02/11/2005 15:24

Miaou, we all contribute by posting here.

zippitippitoes · 02/11/2005 15:26

I think the contribution people make is to post as without the number of people posting the site would not have any content to speak of

the members are the earning power which drives it not its direct source of income

hunkermunker i agree with you

hunkermunker · 02/11/2005 15:28

What, like prefects, Coddy?

flamesparrow · 02/11/2005 15:29

Oooh, very fancily put Zippi!!!

Cod - people who pay subs can boss me as much as they want... I will probably ignore em, but they can try

lalaa · 02/11/2005 15:29

it would help me hugely if the list were in alphabetical order. that way I could see at a glance whether my annual subscription was still in date, or whether I needed to pay again. I'm too impatient to spend ages going through the list to see whether the subscription I paid is out of date.

Enid · 02/11/2005 15:31

I like to pay, and do. But would appreciate a reminder.

Enid · 02/11/2005 15:32

lalaa, go to the list and search for 'lalaa'
