Another mooncup thread ... questions ...

..have been reading old threads and have just about convinced myself to try a mooncup but am not sure about size ... I've had 2 elective secctions and am over 30 but will I really need the bigger size? Even the small one sounds too big!! Thanks!

The website suggests that you'd need the bigger size because the muscles lose tone in older women. If you do yoga or pilates, you might be better off with the smaller one.

They always used to refund if you returned it within your first three cycles - don't know if they still do, but if so then you could try it and see how you got on, and change to the other size if you needed to. You could always contact them for advice.

RTKangaMummy · 28/07/2005 14:57

Npmsl but hopefully if you exchange it they don't send them on to someone else

Millie1 · 28/07/2005 14:58

Thanks WWB ... have looked at the website but just wondering whether anyone ordered smaller than recommended?

Kanga, don't be silly, you know they use the returned ones as swim caps for Barbie ...

They actually punch holes in them and use them as demonstration models.

PrettyCandles · 28/07/2005 15:01

I was daunted by the size, especially as the 'After' one was what I shoudl be using, but it's allright really. Remember, it folds up for insertion, and it's no bigger than (ooo, how can I put this delicately) the male member that caused the pregnancy in the first place!

RTKangaMummy · 28/07/2005 15:04

sorry MILLIE

Millie1 · 28/07/2005 15:24

PSML ... but it's when they're on their second or third exchange that I'd be getting a bit worried ... not a wonder they sometimes leak

Prettycandles ... sorry if tmi etc but did you find them really sore to remove? That's what worries me

OP posts:
flamesparrow · 28/07/2005 15:28

The shop I went to only sells the larger size - she says the difference is so minimal, that most women need the bigger one anyway.

I've had one baby, and am 24 and it was the right size.

I have never had any soreness with removal either.

Oooh... I'll find the link to my slightly TMI review...

flamesparrow · 28/07/2005 15:29

review

AuntyQuated · 28/07/2005 15:31

i'm 41 and had 2 sections. smaller one is fine for me.

first few removals were very painful tbh. i even had visions of A&E visit as couldn't get it out the first time!!! once you get the knack of breaking the suction it is easy.

Millie1 · 28/07/2005 15:32

Thanks Flamesparrow ... what's diff between diva and moon cups?

OP posts:
flamesparrow · 28/07/2005 15:33

Made by different people

spidermama · 28/07/2005 15:34

Remember you sort of fold them to get them in so they're not as big as they look. Once you get it in properly you won't feel it.

Cha · 28/07/2005 15:47

I just got one of these! And there's a thread about it on Mumsnet! I thought I was the only one daft enough to get one. I have had two kids and was only offered the one for mummies, it didn't seem too big at all, esp as I used to use a cap which was miles bigger . I have just finished my first period with it and although I am sure it is not everyone's cup of tea (or eggcupful of blood - ho, ho, there is certainly a hell of a lot more than that, I can tell you), it was OK. No leaks anyway. It is a bit fiddly getting in and out but not sore - well, no sorer than dragging out a dry tampon at the end of yr period [eek icon]. I have snipped off nearly all of the dangly bit for pulling it out with because that was the pokey outy uncomfy bit.
I do not thoroughly reccommend it - it is fiddly, messy and a nightmare if you are out. But it is nicer than the thought of all the chlorinated fibres, toxic shock etc of tampons. And supposedly cheaper in the long run, the info inside says you make yr money back after 6 months. Don't think I ever spent that much on tampons but still, after 10 years use I will be well in profit.
Swim caps for Barbie, though? More like Cindy Big Head.

spidermama · 28/07/2005 15:50

Cha, I've almost complete cut the stalk bit off mine and there#s no dicomfort. The stick can rub a bit but I find I don't use need the stick bit to pull it out anyway.

Don't you just love the little bag that comes with it?

Cha · 28/07/2005 15:53

My little bag is dead boring - just made of some hand knitted, hand sewn, chewed and spat out hemp material with a pink ribbon. I have a mooncup, I think the diva is a bit more special in its packaging. That or I got the prototype...

flamesparrow · 28/07/2005 15:55

Awww, I got the funky divacup bag, and a badge to wear with pride!!! (I wouldn't wear a tampax badge, do people seriously wear the divacup one????)

Millie1 · 28/07/2005 15:55

Hang on a minute ... you get a bag too? Definitely value for money! Re the stalk thingy ... it doesn't protrude like a tampon string, does it? Oh God, definitely tmi now!

OP posts:
flamesparrow · 28/07/2005 15:56

Cut the stalk off. Its meant to be to help yank it out, but it kills if you try and do that, or your fingers slip off.

WigWamBam · 28/07/2005 15:57

Flamesparrow, your review is fab!

Although I got to the bit where it was shooting all over the bathroom and couldn't help but think of the Ben Elton diaphragm routine ...

flamesparrow · 28/07/2005 15:58
Grin
Cha · 28/07/2005 16:05

Tmi coming up... My dd (aged nearly 4) came racing upstairs early yesterday morning in a great huff of excitement. 'Mummy, mummy there's blood all over the sink!!!'. That'll teach me to empty it out in the middle of night without the light on...

flamesparrow · 28/07/2005 16:07

I found DD (2) trying to put an egg cup where egg cups have no reason to go one day

DH told me off for emptying in front of her, then got left alone with her for 24 hours... he soon found out that you cannot pee in peace with her around!

MrsDoolittle · 28/07/2005 16:25

Now after dismissing the mooncup as a joke when I first read about it on Mumsnet, I have gradually come around to the idea. After 15 months!!!
Following gentle persuasion by many wise mumsnetters.
Famesparrows review is very good btw.
I was just about to buy one online about three months ago when I decide to wait until the next month when I got paid. Well my period never came....
Now 3 months later I'm definately pregnant and the mooncup is 'on hold' but I think I am defiantely going to give it a try next time

Which one is better? Mooncup or Diva? what's the difference apart form manufacturers and assuming both are silicone.

CarolinaMoon · 28/07/2005 16:51

They sound fab! I am really tempted now. Don't have any periods atm though, due to bf, so will just have to wait I guess...

Does anyone know how far up it's supposed to go? It's not supposed to be as high as your cervix is it? More like where a tampon would be?
