..have been reading old threads and have just about convinced myself to try a mooncup but am not sure about size ... I've had 2 elective secctions and am over 30 but will I really need the bigger size? Even the small one sounds too big!! Thanks!

Just read your review Flamesparrow ... really good esp about it shooting across the bathroom floor.

Anyone know which is softer - Divacup or Mooncup?

I have the larger mooncup, 36y no kids yet.

have found it to be billiant, due to internal misalignment tampons were never on the menu and with messy time lasting 10 days it got to be a pain in the purse and nether regions.

it has meant swimming all month, no worry of 'smell' during hot weather and no mess and less vanish required!A dream to have a holiday.

The manufacturers say to give yourselv at least 3 cycles to get used to it - about right I think. By the end of the 3rd cycle I knew I would be happy with it long term, though I think it probably took me nearer 6 cycles to really get the hang of it and be completely comfortable.

I too had visions of ending up at A&E on my first day with the Mooncup (there's even a thread somewhere on Mumsnet pleading for advice how to get it out ), but it's great once you get the hang of it. You just need to find the knack that works for you. I find inserting it a bit rougher than removing, and I don't remove it quite as they suggest on the instructions.

As for how far inside you it goes, I think the best way to describe it is a bit graphic, but if you reach in and touch the base, you'll have about the first two knuckles of your finger inside you.

think the people on the other thread who think that mooncups are disgusting need to get a grip
sounds like such a good idea
i cant think of anything more disgusting than a tampax YAK

flamesparrow · 29/07/2005 08:44

For my periods, I only need 3 changes a day - they are avereage flow I think, so it would just need more changes for super heavy.

harpsichordcarrier · 29/07/2005 09:00

can anyone help me with a question? I was thinking of using one of these following birth for lochia - I HATED using pads last time (first time I had used them for about twenty years...). The mooncup website says not to use them but as long as you're changing frequently then I can't see there would be a problem? has anyone else used them after birth?
thanks

I'd feel like that too - your body needs the time and space to heal.

MrsDoolittle · 29/07/2005 10:27

Oh God - I couldn't even bear the thought of touching myself for days afterwards. It was a very tentative lukewarm spray from the shower head.

spidermama · 29/07/2005 11:25

I wouldn't do it harpsichord. You're womb and cervix need time to close and heel. They're at heightened risk of infection.

You're brave to even consider putting anything in there so soon after .... well, you know.

The lochia is annoying and smell though, I know what you mean.

Millie1 · 29/07/2005 13:58

Ooooh I just ordered it and now await it's arrival with a mixture of dread and ... excitement! How sad am I?

Good luck!

I'm 29, 2 caesareans and have an 'After' size cup (did have a go at pushing just before 1st CSection).
Mooncups are great for heavy AND light periods - they hold loads (and it's kind of interesting to compare amounts at each change ) but because they smooth and non-porous they are safe and comfortable for light periods too.
The first month is very tricky and very messy, you might have to kinda give birth to it to get it out LOL. But by my 2nd cycle using it, I felt like I'd been using forever.
Apparently the contents is very good for houseplants...

LeahE · 30/07/2005 19:59

I have the keeper from menses.co.uk -- just mentioning as it doesn't seem to have been namechecked here yet. I'm waiting for first postpartum period to see if I need the bigger size (c-section but only after a fair bit of pushing).

I agree with pp that with "average" flow it only needs emptying about 3 times a day.

Plus (ahudder) at the idea of using it for lochia... major ouchie, I think.

katymac · 30/07/2005 20:16

Where is the cheapest place to buy one...not that I'm going to you understand...I'm just thinking.....

jenk1 · 30/07/2005 20:26

i am a bit worried about it getting lost,so thats whats putting me off otherwise i think i would buy one

shudder, not ahudder, obviously...

geekgrrl · 31/07/2005 08:40

I've got a keeper (identical to the mooncup but made of natural rubber) but have real leakage problems. Any ideas? It's the bigger size, too. Maybe I need to increase my pelvic floor exercises?

I seem to be allergic to tampon strings so am heartily fed up with the whole period thing.

geekgrrl · 31/07/2005 08:49

I just looked on the keeper website - they recommend washing it in your own urine if no drinking water is to hand!

A step too far....

basketcase · 31/07/2005 08:55

so then girls - which one and where is the cheapest/best place to buy?
Finally, after struggling with tampax for too long, I am convinced (great review Flamsparrow - made my mind up for me - you should be on commission)
Just one last little nervous question? Are they really ok for sports like cycling, running and swimming? I hate wearing tampax when I cycle - dry out and become uncomfy but they don?t leak - will a mooncup become dislodged with cycling action? sorry - need to know

Oliviab · 31/07/2005 10:46

Mooncups seem to be uniform price, you can get them in Boots but if you have a Lollipop agent near you you can combine it with other things eg washable pantyliners, organic cotton baby clothes, wooden toys, aromatherapy toiletries etc, usually p&p free.
Visit here to find your nearest agent.
