Hillarys Blinds - are they worth the money?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 30/04/2009 12:08

Had a lady from Hillarys blinds round yesterday to quote for some pleated blinds to go in our bay windows as they're south facing. First she changed the appointment from 9am to 3pm. She finally arrived at 3.45 without a call to say she was running late. So so far I'm not hugely impressed with the service!

She has quoted £314 to do just the downstairs one, £560 to do our bedroom too. They have a half price sale on atm so I thought that wasn't too bad until I rang to confirm that the price would be half of that. But it won't be! They are the sale prices!

This seems a lot of money to me. Has anyone used Hillarys blinds and how did you find them? Alternatively has anybody had blinds made by a different (cheaper) company?

Hello, this thread is a little old and some of the links may be out of date. There was lots of discussion around the cost of Hillarys Blinds and most users found their prices a little high. As alternatives, users recommended John Lewis and Make My Blinds. If you are still interested in Hillarys Blinds you can check them out here. MNHQ.

We booked an appointment with a Hillary sales rep. He arrived over two hours late and with an awful attitude. So we went with a company called Sunbeam Blinds who provided an excellent service and considerable cheaper.

Awful experience with Hillarys Blinds. Waste of time and energy. Will never use them again. Their advisor "Ryan" (Neenan?) didn't even bother to show up on his appointment.

Alot of problem comments on here re. measuring & fitting.....why not your husband, partner, Dad, brother, measure & fit them, to order online?????????

poppy1932 · 24/10/2015 21:03

What can I say about Hilary's? Shocking . The first man that came to measure & quote me a price was lovely , decided to go for what I wanted paid for them with his handheld pos machine , booked a date for 2 weeks later when he didn't show up I tried to call him & his mobile kept going onto answer machine , phoned Hilary's customer service the next morning to be told that the poor man had suddenly passed away the week before & nobody had bother to call me !!! And I had been calling his mobile . I got another fitter who took an additional 8 days to come & fit 2 small bathroom blinds only to be told that my payment had not gone through the day I had booked them & that Hilary's had told me this . No they didn't , to say angry is an understatement. Never again will I go to Hilary's they should be ashamed of themselves for poor customer service . I'm just glad the poor mans wife did not answer his mobile !!!!

Wow Hillary's dont sound good, but i've ordered through web blinds before and the service was ok, took about 2 weeks for my blind to arrive. I've tried some other sites since and the best site i've used is makemyblinds. They dont fit but you order online, like web blinds, and they arrived quicker and their customer support was nice too.

Beware. A replacement blind was fitted before Christmas. The installer left a 91 year old unable to reach the cords to operate the blind. She has to use a foot stool to stand on in order to reach.

He also charges £10 to remove rubbish but left packaging on drive.

When asked to return to make it easier to operate he said he would return first Wednesday in 2016 - he failed to come. Another call made and he hopes to come next week.

Customer service and after sale - forget it.

I was initially impressed with how the quote from the company for carpet was cheaper than carpet ways. But I had deposited with carpet ways a day before I got quote from the company.

I tried to get my deposit back to no avail so decided to ask the advisor for a quote for some parts of the house.

  1. Lack of transparency with quotes no break down making comparison more difficult.
  2. Advisor was so rude claiming he couldn't give quote for different parts of the house and I would need to contact head office which I did and was told he was suppose to do it for me.
  3. He lied that he would need to remeasure while he had a book with the previous day drawings and did what he could have done initially when the customer service insisted he gave the quotes. Opened his small book and gave the quote in less than 5 mins.
  4. Initial quote was about 1975 gave a split of 1700 and about 800 for same thing so adding extra 500 because I asked for different quotes for parts of the house. Due lack of transparency in the quote it is quite difficult to know what was inflated.
  5. Very unprofessional and rude because a customer changed her mind. It is my money and I am allowed to spend it however I decide the advisor should be informed of that.
  6. Was asked to pay full amont for their carpet when I initially thought I would get my deposit from carpet ways back. Rather than letting me go on with carpets for the part of the house the whole deal was cancelled and I was told my refund is in 10-14days! Totally ridiculous. A joke of a company. Even carpet ways was more polite in dealing with the refund I wanted despite the differences. Anyways decided to go ahead with the more polite one.

My recommendation on Hillary's is AVOID! Drove some 200 miles to get to my appointment which was 12-3pm yesterday. No one showed and no one had the courtesy to text, call or email me to say they were not coming. When I called they told me that their man was too far away to come now!! No explanation as to why they had not bothered to inform me of this. I have just moved into a large house with 21 large windows all requiring blinds - Hillary's will not be getting this job!

Vc2403 · 18/07/2016 15:22

I believe Hillary's blinds are a franchise and all their sales advisers are independent therefore they purchase the blinds from Hillary's at a set price and sell on at their own cost!! We had a lovely gent come out to us in February 2016 who advised us this was the case, he quoted us for 7 x vertical blinds £439.98 including VAT. We have just had a visit from a different sales person for a further 4 for the back of the house (no where near as big windows!) £330.00 plus VAT. He said we had a big discount last time and cannot beat/match the price "my hands are tied" regarding the price - I know this is a lie. We have phoned Hillary's direct who tried to say we had a great deal last time and they do not know if they can beat it - we confronted them by letting them know we know how they work and the price is down to individual sales person, he did not know what to say to this and said he will speak with his manager and come back to us tomorrow! They have a 50% off promotion at the minute and they did not have this at the time we first made a purchase! We will see...

jill1924 · 31/08/2016 23:28

We had our whole house measured and quoted for by Hillarys.
Well over £4000!!!! Admittedly 25 windows but this was the price after supposedly giving 50% off.
I asked if they seriously thought I believed the retail price to be the best part of £9000? Idiots!
My husband bought on line and fitted the lot for just over £800.
Hillarys make double glazing salesmen look like saints.

Hillary blinds have had a sale on for months. They quoted us £200 for a simple roller blind measuring 150cms x 150cms in plain white blackout fabric. We purchased a build your own blind kit from John Lewis - £9 and blackout fabric from the local fabric shop £14.50 for 3 metres.

adambadger · 01/12/2016 03:55

I tried Hillarys blinds quality was good but the price was a little high. My friend then told me about Smart Blinds & Shutters. And I had an excellent experience with it as the blinds were beautifully made in traditional and modern styles at very affordable prices. And as far as quality is concerned, they were of excellent quality. You can also visit - www.smartblinds.org/ for more information.

Jessica9amber · 06/12/2016 15:57

Alot of money that should say

k1mch3ll · 19/01/2017 14:06

Hillary's have to be probably THE worst company i have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Fine to the point of payment, but then not interested. After-sales support, communication and experience has been so poor it has been beyond belief for a company that claim to be the leaders in their field. The adviser ignored several calls, messages, emails from myself and head office staff and she as well as the fitter have both lied through their teeth to avoid having to accept liability for fitting our blinds where we specifically asked them NOT to, plus completion of our fitting (that was agreed ahead of full payment would be pre-xmas!) wasn't completed until mid January, with ZERO communication from Hillary's. After several calls only one competent girl at the head office admitted that after listening to what had happened felt Hillary's had let us down and were at fault.... unfortunately this adviser wasn't at the level in the department to decide or authorise an amicable resolution that may have prevented me from writing this review, We had the rest of the blinds in our house fitted by a small, local blind company, who's service, quality and price were all exceptional. Hillary's are most definitely NOT the best in any sense- service, quality or price! I would never recommend or use Hillary's again even if my life depended on it and advise that you don't, unless you want to be disappointed. Moral of the story - Shop local.

firsttimer12345 · 19/01/2017 15:29

We already have some Hilary's blinds and we're impressed first time round but just had an advisor come round to quote for 2 new roller blinds and shocked by the price!

We actually only need the blind, not everything else to go with it like the fittings and cords etc. And they were £250. Each.

Does anybody know where we can get just the fabric part itself and do a diy job?!

JaneAB998 · 04/02/2017 11:57

We had the same, quoted over £400 for 2 wooden blinds - found them online at www.makemyblinds.co.uk/wooden-blinds.html and it was £180 for the pair - husband fitted both in about 30mins.

Keep getting sales calls from Hillary's too... even after I told them I have blinds but they still keep calling....

user1487048874 · 15/02/2017 08:33

I suggest you to find out your nearest or your local blinds providers and compare their product and price also so you can check the difference between quality according to price. You can also find some blinds providers online.

Short answer is NO, not worth the money.
Slightly longer answer is - take a very good look at their after sales care. Rubbish.

deividuska · 03/06/2017 22:39

Worst experience ever!I hope my website will warn people about this "amazing" company www.hillarysreview.co.uk/
