How many of you have dishwashers
Blossomhill · 05/02/2005 11:58
After doing the hundreth pile of washing up and drying up this morning I have decided I have had enough.
Will have to take out some space from small kitchen which is a pain.
Are dishwashers worth getting or am I just being lazy???
bonniej · 05/02/2005 12:02
get one, get one, get one. We had to lose a cupboard and I had to persuade dh for months, but we have never looked back. He even says it was the best buy we've ever made and he was really against them. I couldn't imagine washing up again!
Aero · 05/02/2005 12:04
Ours was given to us by my ex-employer when they had a new kitchen put in, and I can honestly say it's the best gift we've ever received - I wouldn't want to be without it.
maretta · 05/02/2005 12:05
Definitely get one - you'll love it.
I don't think it's lazy either - it depends on how you spend the time you used to spend washing up. Anything beats the eternal scrubbing of washing up.
noddyholder · 05/02/2005 12:06
def worth it I have a slimline one so not too bulky but there are only 3 of us.It makes the dishes so clean and shiny and no drying
mummygow · 05/02/2005 12:14
They are fab - i felt that my kitchen always used to look tidy because you just throw all the dishes in.
lou33 · 05/02/2005 12:19
they are so worth getting. Mine broke down a few eeeks ago and i had to wash up for a day (6 of us, 3 times a day), and i just couldn't keeo up, was extremely depressing. Don't get indeshit though, pay a bit more and go for something like a bosch
mishi1977 · 05/02/2005 12:20

I resisted for years (although I grew up with one) as I thought washing up was something I should be able to do, but then a friend moved to Dubai and offered us theirs at a discounted price. I have never looked back since. I usually only use it once a day (at night) and of course emptying it is a pain, especially as it has to be done first thing in the morning when I have too much else to do, but the occasional sound of it going in the middle of the day, knowing your dirty dishes are being cleaned, is still very satisfying!
SecondhandRose · 05/02/2005 12:32
We've got a Bosch Classic. Don't like the digital ones as they never work for me. I happiest with a knob to turn! It was £299
lou33 · 05/02/2005 12:37
we got a bosch digital one from comet recently, took it away the same day, think it was £279
SeaShells · 05/02/2005 12:41
I've never even considered getting one, but reading this and knowing that almost every pot and piece of cutlery I own are sat there waiting to be washed and really not wanting to do them at all, think I'll go price them up!
charlie01 · 05/02/2005 12:44
We've got a slimline zanussi and it's rubbish, nothing ever gets claned properly and thats even with my husbands obsessive loading techniques! We had a slimline bosch before and it was a million times better. I love my dishwasher!

I wanted one for 8 years! One condition of moving last time was that we would move to the house where it was possible to put in the plumbing for a d/w.
We've had it now for 2.5 yrs, and I still don't take it for granted. I would rather have a d/w than a TV, video, DVD player, ...!
Ameriscot2005 · 05/02/2005 12:54
It's when your dishwasher breaks down that you realise how invaluable it is. Our last dishwasher used to break down every 9 months or so (dodgy heating element) and usually we'd have to wait a few days for the engineer to call, then he'd have to order the part . Those days were awful and the kids were too young at the time to be able to do these chores reliably.
Nowadays, I have my dishwasher on twice a day...
Just counting up - I've had a dishwasher for the past 32 years, but I was mortally embarrassed about owning one as a kid as we were the only ones in my school with a dishwasher. My mum used to make me by the powder at the specialist shop on the way home from primary school as the supermarkets didn't stock it. I was always petrified that someone would spot me!
Caligula · 05/02/2005 12:54
They are definitely worth getting.
Apart from the labour saving, they mean you never (in theory) have to have a dirty kitchen, because dishes go straight into the dishwasher.
Get one, get one, get one, you'll never regret it!
KristinaM · 05/02/2005 12:56
Yes get one. We just have a basic one and its fine. We only use two programmes anyway.I suspect the fancier ones might be quieter to run though
Frizbe · 05/02/2005 13:01
definately worth having, we got ours last year, when dd was born and I wouldn't be without it either! especially when we have guests round (yeah right like that happens these days!)
misdee · 05/02/2005 13:03
definatly get one. i was without one for 2yrs years and when i bought one again last year i felt so relieved. i had mine repaired 2 weeks ago and the engineer broke it, i was very angry at the thought of washing up. its all fixed now tho
smellymelly · 05/02/2005 13:04
I only got one 3 years ago, I actually designed my kitchen round that a a larger fridge.
I find it invaluable for baby bottles as I hate washing them up, and I b/f most of the time!!
It is a good one, but I have to rinse plates so it can work properly. We still wash up about 3 times a day and run the dishwasher about once every day or 2.
Tessiebear · 05/02/2005 13:04
Definately worth it! I have had one for 9 months and it saves me HOURS a day. It broke 2 days ago and wont be fixed until Tuesday. I feel like i am spending my life washing up. Normally i load it throughout the day as and when - put it on in the evening and take 5 mins to unload in the morning
Roobie · 05/02/2005 13:04
We've only had one for a couple of years (it is part of the lovely posh kitchen we inherited!) and in actual fact only use it at weekends or when we have people round to dinner. On the days we are both working and dd is at nursery it is just as quick to hand-wash the few dishes we do use. I think if we tried to use it every day it would never fill up and I would always be taking out dirty things I needed and hand washing them.
