After doing the hundreth pile of washing up and drying up this morning I have decided I have had enough.
Will have to take out some space from small kitchen which is a pain.
Are dishwashers worth getting or am I just being lazy???

Wouldn't be without mine. Everything just seems much cleaner. We were advised to get the biggest you can fit in your kitchen - had to buy more crockery thou!

wouldn't be without mine .. but you have to use it (I know that sounds strange but mum and dad have one and I've caught dad emptying it to handwash everything)

they're great

never had one until relatively recently - always thought they were a waste of money - they're NOT!

twiggy, lol at you "catching" your dad emptying it! Does he creep out to the kitchen when he thinks the rest of you are to busy to notice?

I've got one but instead of arguing over who does the washing up we now argue over who empites the dishwasher!! Does save a lot of time though.

The only problem I have is the depth of the d/w. As the standard 60cm is too big. 58cm is a much better fitting.

I'd never used a dishwasher before we had the pub. Ours had a 2 min cycle too (redsky!)and seemed to be running all the time, especially on a sunday. I came to HATE emptying the thing as it was a non-stop task.

Still, when we moved out last month I knew I couldn't live without one so we got a nice Hotpoint. I must say it seems very quiet and it's bliss only having to empty it once a day!

I've got one - he alternates the washing up w/me. . I had one for years when I owned a home in the US. I've forgotten what it's like to have one a/more. Must not have been that integral to my survival.

Got one and couldn't imagine being without it now.

Report

Not got one and no room for one. Can't imagine ever emptying it, it would just become another cupboard with some stuff getting washed loads of times even though clean because can't be bothered to empty it.

Re: being more environmentally friendly. Surely only if you hand wash up regularly. If only wash up once a day at most hand washing must be better?

We have a dishwasher in the apartment. It is one of the slimline, 8 place ones. We use it all the time, and could now not imagaine not having one. We are moving shortly and a dishwasher will be bought to go into the new place as we move in!

DH bought me one of those slim ones for Christmas 2003 - its WONDERFUL and I'd be lost without it now.

Never had a dishwasher until we moved into our current house 3 years ago. There was a big space in the kitchen where the previous occupiers had kept theirs. I really wasn't bothered about having one - always been used to washing everything by hand. Dh was keen on getting one and we needed something to fill in the space anyway (huge gap left under sink).
I have been spoilt now and would never live without one anymore. Still have to wash up the occasional things by hand though - not everything we have is suitable for dishwasher.

misdee - just to make you really jealous - we're in the process of looking for the 'right' American style fridge/freezer as our one we bought 4yrs ago when DS1 was just 6 months old is WAY to small and I'm forever taking squashed stuff out off it LOL

I must admit I would really love one. No room though. At least all the dirty stuff would be out of the way until we got round to washing it.

We've got a Bosch and I hate it..........!!!!!! I hate the feeling of constantly playing catch up - I like the plates washed up and back in the cupboard ready for the next meal so that you have everything to hand. I also hate the extra expense of having two of everything to accommodate the stuff that's in the dishwasher waiting to go round (I'm too lazy to get individual items out to handwash and too tight to run a half or quarter load of pots). Added to that the frequent non-washing and residues left behind on pots and cutlery, tarnishing of some cutlery, not being able to put everything in and the effect is has on the glaze after a time on plates (our Denby has a flatter finish now) I would rather not have one!
Yes they are good if you have a dinner party or at Christmas, but to be honest I would far rather stop being a lazy arse and just get it done (with help from all the family) by hand.

Must just add - don't buy the Indesit one that's maximum £250 and silver. I've got it and it's rubbish. I regularly have to wash up certain items afterwards. (Though for some reason it's still easier to wash up stuff that has been through the dishwasher.) I used to have an AEG and it was wonderful - would recommend one.
