After doing the hundreth pile of washing up and drying up this morning I have decided I have had enough.
Will have to take out some space from small kitchen which is a pain.
Are dishwashers worth getting or am I just being lazy???

Wouldnt be without mine. It broke down just before xmas - perfect timing!

For the first few days, when I was hand washing everything as I went, I did feel more organised without the DW. By the end of the first week though my good intentions had lapsed and the sink began to pile up with unwashed dishes.

Of course, you still have to unload and load the thing - cant anyone invent a robot for that

misdee · 05/02/2005 13:09

smellymelly, my dream is to have a kitchen large enough for the american style fridge freezers, imagine how many bottles of milk they can hold!!

Ameriscot2005 · 05/02/2005 13:11

Yeah, Misdee, and mouldy food...

WideWebWitch · 05/02/2005 13:12

Worth it, definitely. We only got one 2 years ago and I wish we'd done it sooner.

NameChangingMancMidlander · 05/02/2005 13:13

we're a family of 5 and our dishwasher is invaluable. especially as the dses don't understand the concept of rinsing a glass and reusing it .

we bought this one with the house, it's quite aged in d/w terms as it was new in 98 but we got it for a song and it still washes very well. though i'm sure it's not as quick or efficient as more modern models.

i hate the mess involved in handwashing and i can't bear the feel of detergent on my hands so i have to wear marigolds, sexy eh ?! all the stuff cluttering up the worktop 'cos i hate drrying up too. yeuch.

munnzieb · 05/02/2005 13:14

I do and there's only two of us, wouldn't be without it! (we both work and can't be arsed to wash up! )

misdee · 05/02/2005 13:18

ameriscot, you havent seen how much milk i have in fridge at any one time (i tend to buy once a week, and get 21pints sometimes)

smellymelly · 05/02/2005 13:18

Misdee, I actually have quite a small kitchen, but I have managed to squeeze them in, My fridge is a normal widht but much taller, with no freezer. Although I could do with an ice-box. It is great to be able to fit so much in, but I sometimes forget what we have in there, and do end up throwing some away! I think the american fridges keep stuff for longer as the temp is colder and regulated better. Mine isn't too bad as it has a fan.

Sorry, going off on a tangent there!

My dishwasher is an LG.

NameChangingMancMidlander · 05/02/2005 13:18

i usually switch ours on after tea, at around 8ish and empty it in the morning whilst the kids eat brekkie.

get one and you'll wonder how you managed without it !

a small bit of advice though, go for the quietest model you can afford !

Tiggiwinkle · 05/02/2005 13:19

There are 7 of us and I could not possibly do without one now! It is a major trauma if it ever breaks down!

smellymelly · 05/02/2005 13:19

OMG, 21 pints in one go, I thought we were bad!! We get through about 4 pints a day.

Thanks ladies. You have my mind up and I have just told dh that I need a dishwasher, it is essential. My dad who is a plumber will need to tell me the best place to put it!

lou33 · 05/02/2005 13:23

we do six pints a day misdee!

misdee · 05/02/2005 13:24

thats about what we get thro when dd2 is drinking milk (atm she is refusing) as well lou. atm its four pints a day.

and i always get to the end of the month with 4 milk tokens left as i forget to take them out with me. so end up with loads of milk.

JanH · 05/02/2005 13:37

Ours also broke down recently (not its fault ) and I couldn't believe how long it took me to wash up by hand and there are only 4 of us these days. GET ONE!!!

Ours is Bosch, cheapo basic model, works fine. I think this is probably the equivalent (ours is about 7 years old I think) and it's only £230 including delivery - also at Comet and they can deliver sooner as a rule, if you can't wait now you've decided!

mishi1977 · 05/02/2005 13:38

blossom..i will aks DH when he gets home i just know its thin and washes the dishes

Titania · 05/02/2005 13:43

Oh I so want a proper dishwasher....would make my life so much easier...the one I've got at the moments a bit temperamental...he only does it when it suits him

HunkerMunker · 05/02/2005 13:44

Yes, get one. Get one. Get one. I HATE washing up. It's SUCH a waste of time! We only have a slimline one - a full size one wouldn't fit in our kitchen but it's like a magic cupboard - you put dirty plates in and they come out clean!

Blossomhill · 05/02/2005 13:44

Thanks Mishi

I Love my dishwasher - it's a 10 yr old Zanussi and does a great job.

My top tip is don't get a small one, buy a big one and lots of dishes/plates/cups/glasses/cutlery.

I even have 2 x cheese graters

JanH · 05/02/2005 13:47

slimline at Comet

Blossomhill · 05/02/2005 13:50

Thanks Jahn x That was very helpful!

We've just this second ordered a new one as our current one is just about falling to pieces and is 8 years old, so time for a replacement. I really wouldn't be withouth mine and I put everything in including, the bin lid, water filter, toothbrushes and the kitchen cloth everyday, all come out lovely and clean. Lets hope the new one compares to the old. Both are Zanussi.

I really don't know how anyone lives without one, get one, you won't regret it.

KristinaM · 05/02/2005 13:51

Titania - sell your husband and get a dishwasher
