Mine?s 8 years old and am planning to use it for new baby. Do I have to prepare myself for being openly laughed at?

LizS thanks for link. Spotted Michael Douglas pushing same daytripper as ours.

HunkerMunker · 01/02/2005 14:18

Did harbour a secret notion of getting a new pram for any (well, each) subsequent baby, just because I'm a pushchairaholic but DH keeps saying things that lead me to believe this won't be the case (like 'You DO NOT need another bloody buggy!!').

Fastasleep · 01/02/2005 14:21

Oooh famous people have my Maclaren... all is well

Lowryn · 01/02/2005 14:24

Oh god LIZS does this mean I am actually trendy?
LOL
Mind you Maclaren did do a state of the art hi tech pushchair a few years back.
It was a limited edition one that cost over £1000
Madness!

Bagpuss30 · 01/02/2005 14:38

Have you seen the new one in the Mothercare catalogue - Kate Spade (whoever she is) limited edition Maclaren Quest. It is twice the price of the normal one .

I do admit to being an E3 owner but we do a fair bit of walking in woods etc at weekends. I have used it for dd since she was 18 months and will be using it for our new baby in July.

NameChangingMancMidlander · 01/02/2005 14:41

OMG, How mush of a label junkie do you have to be to spend twice the money on a buggy which is exactly the same (apart from the fabric pattern) as it's half the price counterpart ?

colditzmum · 01/02/2005 14:44

I honestly don't understand the stigma of buying things second hand.

Most people live in a second hand house, and have second hand cars! Why is it different for everything else?

colditzmum · 01/02/2005 14:45

All my pushchairs have been second hand by the way, I would rather spend the money on fresh fish and organic lamb chops!

lowcalCOD · 01/02/2005 14:45

I like new houses meself though! but am not rpud about second hadn stuff no

misdee · 01/02/2005 14:46

i buy things second hand. nothing wrong with that, but dh wanted me to buy the e3 new as it was expensive and wanted a guarentee with it.

sweetkitty · 01/02/2005 14:49

same here bought Graco travel system for over £250 loevly to push but so impractical.

On mumsnet advice bought Techno XT from kiddicare for £99 with matching footmuff which is great and so cosy for about £30. I love it. I love hte fact it lies flat I pop it down when the little darling is asleep.

My frined is spending £500 on a M&P one madness!

colditzmum · 01/02/2005 14:52

Oh no misdee, wasn't saying that you shouldn't buy things new.

I have a friend who is on benifits, yet insists on buying her childrens clothes from Next, even their socks. She won't have anything second hand, she is up to her eyeballs in debt, but according to her, second hand stuff is "stiggy"! (her words, NOT mine!)

She would rather put her kids in clothes that are far too small, than buy cheaper clothes, and I really don't see her point with that!

She got a loan to get a particular double buggy, it was about £350! I am sure she could have gat one for less than £100 second hand.

My buggy is a battered, 2nd-hand Babyway, but I love it, it's so light

cat82 · 01/02/2005 14:55

Sweetkitty- Snap, you may have bought the same Graco as we did. We have now nicknamed it "the tank" and have bought a lovely light and zippy McClaren instead
As soon as dd grows out of her car seat we are selling "The Tank" (offers welcome )

misdee · 01/02/2005 14:55

she is silly then. i am always on ebay, at nearly new sales, the sales boards on here searching for bargains. have just got a samsonite travel cot for £17, loads of nappies (now some would say yuk to that lol) and baby stuff all from mumsnet people.

i tend to buy NEXT stuff when its sale items or i am searching for a pretty dress for my dd's.

Kelly1978 · 01/02/2005 15:13

I got to admit to just taking delivery of my new Jane powertwin that cost over £500. I'm not a fashion victim though - I live in a top floor flat on a very busy road. I needed a buggy that is narrow to get around the crowds and the travel system means I won't have to wake two babies when I get home to get them up four flights of stairs.
Also, IMO a three wheeler is a hell of a lot easier to push than a 'lightweight' buggy. I had both for ds, the stroller was for getting on and off buses when I needed to fold it, but I hated pushing the thing!

Bozza · 01/02/2005 15:43

Agree that she is silly. Although admit to buying my kids sock in Next. However between outgrowing all the newborn presents and Christmas DD was mainly dressed in hand-me-down clothes and very pretty she looked in them .

pootlepod · 01/02/2005 15:54

I have two- one 'trendy' one not.

Have powertrack 360 which is brill for everything except folding into a carboot with other bits already in there. Also have mothercare stroller (couldn't justify the extra cost of maclaren)
I use them for different things, tend to use the stroller for public transport/steps and holidays, the Jane for long walks or if I know LO will neeed a reasonable sleep when out.

At first I didn't want to get a 3 wheeler but after tesing them found them a lot easier to push and this one turns on a sixpence. It does nark me a little that people think I'm trendy/wealthy, it's a design that works really well. Other products are continually revised to improve their function/design so why not puschairs?

tarantula · 01/02/2005 15:59

A 'trendy' buggy (e3) is pretty much the only thing that dp and I have bought dd. We had a chicco travel system but managed to break it by going over too much rough terrain Most of the rest of her stuff (clothes and baby equipment) was passed down from my SIL (to whom I say a big cheers as she saved us a fortune) or were pressies from the family (Sometimes its great to have a large family). I firmly believe in saving the money till they can appreciate what you are buying them

pixel · 01/02/2005 16:26

I've only just parted with my beloved monbebe pram/pushchair (convertible)which was second hand 9 years ago and has been used practically non-stop ever since as neither child wanted to give it up. Last summer I had both of them in it eating lollies on the way back from the paddling pool, and all the swimming gear etc underneath!

I had to get my step-dad to take it to the dump because I couldn't bear to. How sad is that?!

I'll admit it was heavy but I could march along with ds inside, dd on a buggy board, shopping underneath and still have a hand free to hold an umbrella. A lot of the light/mediumweight ones are hard to steer one-handed I find.

MunchedTooManyMarsLady · 01/02/2005 17:00

I have a large(ish) Implast Twin Classic. It's second hand and the DTs look gorgeous in it. It's totally practical and not at all trendy. However, I do have a mothercare urban detour single buggy that I was given for trips with them singly.
older than this model

chatee · 01/02/2005 17:17

i'm still using a m+p pliko in bright green/royal blue that was bought in 2000 but was the previous seasons colours....the only new thing added to it was a cosy toes(as dh ruined the original when dd was 2-so didn't really need one for her then)and i managed to get a matching colour at half the price of some cosy toes by ordering from snugglytots(or something like that)based in wales....

Tommy · 01/02/2005 17:39

I have a Britax Practicale (3 years of continuous use) which is very uncool I think and a Maclaren stroller thing - which is just annoying.
I read some where once that pushing a pushcair always looks "common" so trying to look cool while doing it is completely impossible anyway!

lowcalCOD · 01/02/2005 17:47

yes tommy
aslo think most prams are chavvy and horrible.

janeybops · 01/02/2005 18:00

Have a Graco citilite and love it only 4.5 k and very zippy. Doubt very much if it trendy. Not sure I like these new trendy ones. Look a bit odd to me. Perhaps I haven't seen enough of them - not in my local area anyway...

Tinker · 01/02/2005 18:48

Oooo, do feel somewhat reassured now. I have a Graco but not sure of the model. Think it's a Mirage. Got it out on Sunday and still looks very nice (and clean which is a big for me) Had forgotten how heavy it was though and I've got a blood blister on my finger from trying (and failing) to collapse it again.

Think I'll stick with it for now but only use it for a year or so and then get one like
www's link (naughty little temptress, you )

Boyfriend's sister has offered us hers - a 3 wheeler! So I could be trendy and mean still.

But actually like not going with the flow. Prob makes me just as shallow, shouldn't even notice the flow.
