Mooncup

OK, so it took me a while to get over the squeemishness of thinking about this, but I am considering buying a mooncup. I am fed up with tampons and pads, and, after using millions of disposable nappies, have been thinking lately about being more eco-friendly.

So...what do users think? I have seen the site, and read the blurb, but I want real opinions, bad as well as good. £27 is a lot to invest if I only use it once. If it is as good as people seems to think, I'm surprised that I only heard about it lately.

Full is when the fluid level reaches the tiny holes just under the rim, afaik. So a little lower than it first appears.

Angiel · 24/09/2003 22:21

I must be really thick, because someone else said about the holes, but I really can't find any on mine. Should I be able to see them?

GeorginaA · 24/09/2003 22:32

Well I can see them - they're spaced about a centimetre and a half apart about a centimetre from the top of the mooncup. About 7 in total - they are small though and I really had to look for them (just got mine out of the bathroom cabinet now to check I wasn't going mad...)

marthamoo · 24/09/2003 22:56

Mine arrived today - didn't expect it to be so big! Af not due for a couple of weeks though so don't get to test it yet. Must admit to feelings of "what was I thinking of?" when I unwrapped it..wish me luck (not sure I could bring myself to send it back if I don't like it...)

I have not heard of the mooncup over here, but maybe I have been sheltered. From Marthamoo's description I am thinking it looks a bit like a colander??

I have looked and looked and I cannot see any holes in my mooncup. It always starts leaking when it gets up to the first big ridge. Is that the full level?

I'm not sure whether this is working for me or not. I thought it was going to be the answer to all my prayers but its not working out that way.

Thanks Bloss.

Angiel, have you tried filling it up with water to see where the water leaks from the sides to help you find the holes? or maybe you have a defective mooncup with no holes?!!

Mummysurfer · 28/09/2003 20:19

Just when I thought I'd cracked it I've come across another problem... ahem, ahem....too much info coming up ... does any one else find it difficult to have a poo when mooncup is in place?????

Just trying out my new mooncup today. Owww! Got it in ok. Don't know if I twisted it right or not but I couldn't feel it inside me and it didn't leak so I guess it was ok. But getting it out... I tried bearing down till I could get at it, and then stuck a finger up the side and heard the suction break, and then pulled - but it still felt like my insides were coming out with it. What am I doing wrong?

Mummysurfer · 06/10/2003 18:15

Sounds like you're doing it all right ... it's just practice. I've had mine for 3 cycles and am now getting the hang of removing it. I've even been brave enough to trim off the end thing!!

Sheila · 27/10/2003 13:14

I've just bought one of these but I can't get it in! It really hurts! Any advice?

Tissy · 27/10/2003 14:25

It takes a bit of practice, and it certainly helps if you are having your period when you try it out- the extra lubrication,IYKWIM.

I found it helpful to lubricate the cup with a little hot water (not too hot!), fold it into 4, as per the instructions, squat down, manoeuvre the edge into place, then push up towards the small of your back.

Once you've got the knack, you won't need to squat or lubricate, probably.

Has anyone sent there's back because they couldn't get on with it? I really can't get it to work properly for me, I thought it would be the answer to all my problems, but it hasn't really worked out like that. It's so messy!!

cerys · 28/10/2003 08:48

Angiel - yes, I sent mine back. I did try, but just couldn't get on with it

debster · 28/10/2003 09:05

Just wanted to say that I've used mine for one period now and love it - sorry to all those who don't. I can't believe I no longer have to worry about whether I've got enough tampons etc. Just one gripe - I wish they'd change the name. My partner keeps going round saying it in a swoony, dreamy hippy way and it's driving me nuts!

alibubbles · 28/10/2003 10:00

Sods law, I haven't had a period for two months and it started on the airplane sunday night, it always happens when I fly! But at least when I see the gynae man today at 10.40 I can at least show him how full it gets!! Emptied it three times since 6.30 am already.

I'm back from the gynae man, he was impressed with my mooncup, not seen one before. I had emptied it before I went at 10.15. it was full when I had to remove it for my examination at 10.50.

Thay have suggested a Mirena coil to start with, I have turned it down previously, but will try it for a while and see if it makes any difference. Got to go back in 4 weeks to have it fitted. I'll cary on with the mefanemic acid meanwhile, but I just hate taking any drugs, that's why I was so anti the Mirena coil. Ho hum!
