Mooncup

OK, so it took me a while to get over the squeemishness of thinking about this, but I am considering buying a mooncup. I am fed up with tampons and pads, and, after using millions of disposable nappies, have been thinking lately about being more eco-friendly.

So...what do users think? I have seen the site, and read the blurb, but I want real opinions, bad as well as good. £27 is a lot to invest if I only use it once. If it is as good as people seems to think, I'm surprised that I only heard about it lately.

Well, you certainly all seem very happy with it!

codswallop · 24/06/2003 21:40

I am a mirena woman - no need!

GeorginaA · 24/06/2003 22:05

I sooooo want to be a Mirena woman once we get around to having 2nd child! Life would be so much easier.

pupuce · 24/06/2003 22:11

I think you have convinced me..... and if Aloha isn't sold than I must be... we tend to disageree

Just kidding Aloha....

aloha · 24/06/2003 22:14

Go on Pupuce, get one, you know you want to...

(aargh only on this thread because I am supposed to be working on a contraception feature and this is more interesting)

I will be plugging the Mirena coil though, after reading so many good reports on this site.

sis · 25/06/2003 11:15

Thanks to this thread, I have got one and am using it as I type - very comfotable but a bit odd when taking it out!

As as aside, Alibubbles, I think you are in North London I read on the internet somewhere that the Royal Free in Hampstead is providing non invasive treatment for fibroids that you may want to look into.

alibubbles · 25/06/2003 13:39

Thanks sis I'll look into that and have the info for my GP

How are you all doing with these????

anais · 21/07/2003 22:33

I got mine last month and I think I like it. It's v. fiddly, but it seems so much better than tampons. I only used it for about 3 days, so we'll see how it goes next month! I also bought cloth pads - lovely fleecy ones, which are sooo soft and comfortable. Took a lot of convincing myself to actually use them though...

Mummysurfer, are you using the mooncup or considering it or what?

sis · 22/07/2003 10:28

I still need a pantyliner with mine but it is not uncomfortable and I no longer need the huge range of pads that I used to need. So I'm doing okay but probably would be better if I did some more pelvic floor exercises.

Mummysurfer · 22/07/2003 10:43

Anais, yes I have mine. Used it briefly last month ( see previous posts).
This month I got it in no problem, it was really comfortable - completely unaware of it. No leaks and I was using it on day 1 which is very heavy. Removing it was different. I could reach it this time, could get hold of it but then OUCH. i tried angling it but after 3 removals in one day I felt like had been brutally assaulted. No way was I prepared to do it on day 2. It took my 24 hours plus to recover! After that I didn't get the chance to sterelise it ( house visitors) so am going to try it again next month.
I really want to get it right as i find tampons really drying!

Thanks Bloss. Yes I am aware of breaking the seal but don't know if I'm quite doing it. However, it's not my insides that are painful, it's then outside edge. Too much information coming up ... I've had 2 c-sections so only have the small cup, but my perineum has never been stretched and seems to over hang. It's that bit that hurts.
Anyway I found it reassuring that it took you 3 cycles to get used to it. We are away on holiday next cycle & can't decide whether to give it a go then or not.

addle · 23/07/2003 09:16

Anais, could you tell me where you get your cloth pads? thanks very much.

Addle. try here which gives you a good idea of what's available.

I bought the moon mammas ones although I got them from snazzy pants as Kirsty didn't have enough in stock when I ordered.

HTH - they are really lovely and I'm not on commission, honest!

Mummysurfer · 24/07/2003 08:07

Thanks Bloss. I think I'm going to give it a miss next month as I'm on holiday. But will definitely persevere. It's reassuring to know your situation is the same as me & you've managed it.

GeorginaA · 24/07/2003 13:46

Well as I said further down this thread the first month was a bit of a disaster, but this second month is going pretty well.

I love being able to put it in and forget about it, and my cramps (I usually get very painful periods) seem to be so much less and more bearable without tampons drying me out further.

Had one slight leak but now have sussed getting it in and out and have had no probs since.

Am a little achy down there due to removal more than insertion but as I'm improving my "technique" I think next month is going to be a doddle.

I'm sold. I love my mooncup

Mummysurfer · 24/07/2003 21:02

Beetroot

How are you getting on? You seemed to like it then went off it. Have you given up?

jacksmumto1 · 26/07/2003 21:20

Can I join in please?!

I use cloth-pads and find them really comfy but suffer from a "visible line".... not good.. So, I am tempted with a mooncup/keeper - here are my questions!

  1. which is best a mooncup or a keeper?
  2. I find inserting a tampon difficult and end up using applicator ones but also, it doesn't matter what I do, I can usually feel the tampon (varies from a slight discomfort to painful). Am I going to manage a mooncup?
XAusted · 27/07/2003 21:26

I always had to use applicator tampons too but find the mooncup easy to insert so have a go with one, jacksmumto1.

anais · 28/07/2003 23:32

jacksmumto1, I believe the keeper is made of latex rubber, where the mooncup is silicone. There is a small chance with the keeper than you can develop a latex allergy. I'm sure others will know more.

I've never had a problem with tampons, so I can't really answer your second question, but I love my mooncup. I used to get the sort of pulling down feeling for the first day or 2 with tampons and that doesn't happen with the mooncup, but I've never had pain or discomfort.

Last month I liked my mooncup but had reservations. This month I LOVE my mooncup!
