Mooncup

OK, so it took me a while to get over the squeemishness of thinking about this, but I am considering buying a mooncup. I am fed up with tampons and pads, and, after using millions of disposable nappies, have been thinking lately about being more eco-friendly.

So...what do users think? I have seen the site, and read the blurb, but I want real opinions, bad as well as good. £27 is a lot to invest if I only use it once. If it is as good as people seems to think, I'm surprised that I only heard about it lately.

Just started using mine. No leaks at all. I got the best bit of advice on here about bearing down to remove it- much easier (although still a bit suctiony iykwim) Also find that a mini bear down can help to twist it as well. Really pleased it's great.....

deegward · 05/09/2003 22:39

I'd never even heard of one until tonight, and after reading the whole thread, am quite tempted..You really can talk about anything on mumsnet

judetheobscure · 05/09/2003 22:56

Hmmm - used the link on one of the other threads and am vaguely tempted ... have to say the overall impression the website gave was great - stylishly designed etc. etc. - was expecting some sort of home-made type set-up. Thinking about it ....

I had never heard of one 'til tonight either and, after my initial reaction, which was "ewwww!" I have to admit to being quite intrigued. Towels make me sweaty and sore (more information than you needed perhaps?) and I have never got on with tampons..I am always aware of the string.

Dunno...I'll have to give it some thought.

I think mooncup should be giving bloss a commission, she's probably done wonders for their sales!

do you reckon it'd be ok to use it in the post-natal phase? You've all got me curious. I've never heard of such a thing before.

SoupDragon · 07/09/2003 20:53

OMG! do you really want to be putting anything up there postnatally???

pupuce · 07/09/2003 21:49

Monkey - do you mean right after birth ????? I think I'd leave that area "alone" for 2 weeks.....

SoupDragon · 08/09/2003 08:12

Only 2 weeks?? LOL!

monkey · 08/09/2003 16:21

Yeah, sorry, I don't mean literally straight after, I can't remember how long lochia lasts for, 6 weeks? I guess I was thinking about 3 weeks after, but I suppose that's still being optimistic! Ok forget I asked. Just can't bear the thought of towels for 6 weeks or longer.

pupuce · 08/09/2003 16:28

Lochia tends to last for 2 weeks - hence my suggestion soupy ! Of course if periods were massive you might nit be tempted...

marthamoo · 10/09/2003 07:50

OK..I'm (semi) convinced. If it's as good as the claims it will be fantastic. Have ordered one this morning. Was a bit disppointed it said allow 28 days for delivery - took last pill of packet yesterday and was hoping to have it in time for period (always was impatient!)

Was slightly offput by Julie's testimonial on the mooncup site about how beautiful the glistening liquid is in her mooncup and how she doesn't want to throw it away, she wants to create art with it.

Yes, well dear...I'm sure there's some medication you can take for those kind of tendencies

Jeez, look at the time...have children to get up and dressed and off to school. Yikes.

Bogwoppit · 10/09/2003 09:23

ah but marthamoo I ordered on mon am & it was here the following morning.
was intrigued & what with expense of OPKs, folic acid etc decided that it would save me some omoney by not having to buy tampons each month.
So now have it ready for when AF arrives this weekedn

Told dh I had ordered a mooncup and he asked how much it cost. When I told him he asked why I couldn't just cut a tennis ball in half and then I'd have a spare one. May have to kill him soon.

Jimjams · 11/09/2003 20:04

Don't people feed it to their house plants as well (menstrual blood that is). Surely that's going to attract flies? bleurgh

abbysmum · 11/09/2003 20:08

At least he suggested a tennis ball and not a foot ball.

Bogwoppit · 12/09/2003 15:59

no probs getting it in or out., but not sure if it is turning or just my fingers slipping round it? how do you know. it feels fully open so is it a prob.
other than that I can't feel it & heres hoping no leaks etc.

Meid · 12/09/2003 17:09

Anyone else not happy with theirs????

I used my mooncup for 3 cycles and I've gone back to towels and tampons. The mooncup worked but I just decided I prefered the old method.

After re-reading this thread though I think I may give it another go...

Angiel · 24/09/2003 22:04

Ok, can someone please tell me how full, full is?

I'm pretty sure I'm putting it in ok but I seem to start leaking when it gets to about half full. I seem to leak as much as I did with tampons and I'm not sure why.
