Where to find a wool hooded coat like this please?

Would love some advice about where to look for the following please:
I really want a wool coat with a hood, not a duffle coat, not a tie waist, hip or mid length, warm, dark colour like burgundy, navy, forest green or grey.
Had a fantastic one similar from Joules many years ago but they don’t make things like they used to.
Don’t know where to start looking.
Budget is under £100
Size 18-20
Thank you

Oh you're right - I got confused between the sale price and old price - not over budget at all! I think all the colours are nice. And I do love boiled wool.

Before I opened the thread I thought Bruar or duffle coat.

@Sunbringer , did you read the OP? She said "not a duffle coat".

Coming up for my just under by a fiver. Will have to measure myself against their sizing tomorrow. I love how plain it it!

I will admit I’d feel less guilty spending money on myself if there was a cheaper option though!

@HopefulBeliever , it's a bargain and you should get decades of wear out of it. I bought a coat in the 1990s because it was exactly what I wanted. It was £££. I still love it. It would be at least 3x£££ now.

Godsdammit, I clicked the link and now I want one!! That’s a lovely coat.

I don’t suppose what you want exists for cheaper! £100 is a bargain for wool.

Yiayoula · 21/09/2026 07:14

Oooh, almost wish I hadn’t clicked too as I love the red one !
Very clean lines , no bulky pockets and the funnel neck is gorgeous.
But there’s only one left in my size and we’re on holiday outside the UK ….. 🙄

Sandunesandseashells · 21/09/2026 07:29

I clicked on the Bruar link and may have bought 2 handbags 🤦🏻‍♀️. Supposed to be Xmas shopping!

Do you or anyone know anything about house of Bruar sizing? I am normally a size 6 to 8 and their sizes start at 10. Do they come up small? I really like their stuff but can’t order it because of the sizing.

There's a customer chat line on the House of Bruar website on which they might be happy to answer sizing questions – perhaps even in inches/cm (no, surely that would be too sensible for any brand).

I know because I've teetered on buying directly from them before, although didn't in the end.

Click 'find the right size ' on the item page. It gives actual measurements of the garment.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 21/09/2026 10:58

For a main coat £100 is not a high budget. It’s probably the level where you can get something decent but not more than that. So don’t feel guilty.

the house of bruar one is nice, I like the red colour.

Sorry didn’t mean to commit a crime by accidentally recommending the wrong coat.

However...think about how warm an unlined coat is going to be? I haven't worn one because I liked lined...easier to put on as well and I think that extra thin layer would make a big difference.

StylishAndBeautiful · 21/09/2026 12:59

Boiled wool coats are not always lined, are they? Having said that, I looked at a COS boiled wool jacket (men's and nice) and a Boden boiled wool jacket and both are lined.

Not connected to the OP, I like this jacket: Harris Tweed Jacket | Lands' End but they don't have my size.

Thank you for that - but House of Bruar is a place that I've never shopped from online!!

The actual place itself is a huge building & car-parking complex off the A9 in Perthshire, built in a really pastiche faux-Scottish rural architecture style. Years ago (early 2000s?), waaaayyy before its online shop grew so massively (maybe even before it had a shopping website at all!!), my old boss used to drag me in there for coffee or lunch all the time ... (He & I were out on site visits together a lot, usually assessing the landscape & visual impacts of windfarm sites.)

It was NOT considered the place to shop for clothes by any self-respecting fashion or style lover!! My 30-something self (who shopped at 90s/2000s Scottish department storeinstitutions like Glasgow House of Fraser/vintage paradises like Starry Starry Nights/designer boutiques such as The Warehouse & Jane Davidson) considered it to be one step up from a Dobbies garden centre & its dowdy clothing franchises!! So I would walk sniffily past the Edinburgh Woollen Mill jumpers to the food hall - as I did like some of their edible produce!!

So I think the much shorter answer to the above question is - I'm probably not the right person to ask!!! 😁

(But am very interested in what @PhaedraTwo , another Scottish resident, might have to say!!)

Tryingnottobeamouse · 21/09/2026 13:16

I got a wool coat with a great hood from Zara a couple of years ago, very very good value. It was approx £50, still going strong

EleanorMc67 · 21/09/2026 13:24

@TemporarilyCantDoMyself - in the interests of research (& fairness!), I did just have a quick look at their website, which is rather overwhelming!

And I spotted some things that I really liked! From this brand - organic cotton & one of them is even silk/cotton:

If they're as nice in the flesh, I may have to eat my words ... & a plate of their very good smoked salmon!!!

You can't say they "don't make things like they used" to and then say budget is £100 for a wool coat.

For £100 you're looking at cheap fast fashion brands.
