Where to find a wool hooded coat like this please?

HopefulBeliever · 20/09/2026 18:56

Would love some advice about where to look for the following please:
I really want a wool coat with a hood, not a duffle coat, not a tie waist, hip or mid length, warm, dark colour like burgundy, navy, forest green or grey.
Had a fantastic one similar from Joules many years ago but they don’t make things like they used to.
Don’t know where to start looking.
Budget is under £100
Size 18-20
Thank you

@TemporarilyCantDoMyself - in the interests of research (& fairness!), I did just have a quick look at their website, which is rather overwhelming!

And I spotted some things that I really liked! From this brand - organic cotton & one of them is even silk/cotton:

https://www.houseofbruar.com/search/?term=Emily%20lovelock&page=2

If they're as nice in the flesh, I may have to eat my words ... & a plate of their very good smoked salmon!!!

I used to feel the same as you about Bruar, but they have some excellent things now. Look at their Monrospun cropped cashmere cardigans (and I don't know why I'm telling everyone about them!) They're lovely, cosy and they wash beautifully. I may have 3, I certainly need more! Bargain price.

I've got an unlined wool jacket from Hush and I wouldn't do it again - I like jackets and coats to have a lining.

Thank you for that - but House of Bruar is a place that I've never shopped from online!!

The actual place itself is a huge building & car-parking complex off the A9 in Perthshire, built in a really pastiche faux-Scottish rural architecture style. Years ago (early 2000s?), waaaayyy before its online shop grew so massively (maybe even before it had a shopping website at all!!), my old boss used to drag me in there for coffee or lunch all the time ... (He & I were out on site visits together a lot, usually assessing the landscape & visual impacts of windfarm sites.)

It was NOT considered the place to shop for clothes by any self-respecting fashion or style lover!! My 30-something self (who shopped at 90s/2000s Scottish department storeinstitutions like Glasgow House of Fraser/vintage paradises like Starry Starry Nights/designer boutiques such as The Warehouse & Jane Davidson) considered it to be one step up from a Dobbies garden centre & its dowdy clothing franchises!! So I would walk sniffily past the Edinburgh Woollen Mill jumpers to the food hall - as I did like some of their edible produce!!

So I think the much shorter answer to the above question is - I'm probably not the right person to ask!!! 😁

(But am very interested in what @PhaedraTwo , another Scottish resident, might have to say!!)

We are due to come up from London to do a bit of a tour of Scotland soonish. We are stopping at Pitlochry and I suggested to my husband that we visit the house of Bruar. I then looked at photos and wondered if it was a little bit tacky rather than somewhere to buy good quality Scottish clothes.… I do like some stuff on their website though. And a lot of the bad reviews were about the fish and chips and restaurant service!

belleoubete · 21/09/2026 14:49

Seasalt do a version, in boiled wool, I sold one on vinted not so long ago. Second hand is the best way to go, I often pick up wool coats in the charity shop for £1 or £2!

I've looked - & they do indeed look lovely! Very simple, & some of the colours are fab. The slightly "muckier" shades are what suit me better- but I love the sweetie shop ones - Rosebud, Parakeet, Eucalyptus. Delicious colours & names!

I don't tend to wear fitted cardigans these days though - I prefer looser/chunkier/oversized cardigans on me. Though I do wear simple fitted fine jumpers a lot. Annoyingly though, they only seem to do one other style in the Munrospun cashmere that comes in all those lovely colours - a ruffle-trim jumper, when I'd rather have a plain jumper version of the short cardigan. Maybe I should lobby them ...??!!

I do agree about the styles, I 'd like short plain jumpers too, but I wear the cardigans buttoned up as a jumper rather than open over other garments. They look really good with Oska 'O' shaped trousers.

LaurieFairyCake · 22/09/2026 07:27

That Bruar coat is LOVELY! Pure wool for under a £100! I like all the colours.

StylishAndBeautiful · 22/09/2026 09:33

Wool coats: Charity shops struggle to get rid of them. They're heavy to carry if you aren't parked nearby, need dry cleaning etc. As @belleoubete pp, you can pick one up for next to nothing.

@ThePelican ,I wear buttoned up cardigans as jumpers too. This sort: Women's 100% Merino Crew Neck Cardigan | UNIQLO UK, Cream | Silk & Cotton 3/4 Sleeve Crop Cardigan | WoolOvers UK
I like the row of buttons because it creates a vertical line, a jumper looks more lumpy.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/09/2026 10:08

I do like that Bruar one, but to me it’s not long enough for a proper winter coat, and IMO a good lining is essential.

StylishAndBeautiful · 22/09/2026 11:04

Does one really need a winter coat? I wore a denim jacket most of last winter.
Most years I wear a thin fleece jacket under a waterproof.

I don't stand outside e.g. watching DC play football, I'm in the SE, and I do have a winter coat and an overcoat but they rarely get worn.

I might give it a try - though it's skirts (big voluminous ones, Kemi Telford or similar) that I tend to wear very fine-knit jumpers with, tucked in like a long-sleeved T-shirt really. The really deep tight waistbands on her skirts give me a semblance of a waist! But I could maybe wear a cropped cardi not tucked in.

Will give it a go with an old cardi I have!

Ohhhhhh yes!! In Edinburgh & most definitely. Besides, what would I do with all my lovely coats & jackets in just about every shade of red, rust, burgundy, green, mustard, teal, & navy?! And black of course! And that's not counting the vintage evening jackets & coats & kimonos that come out on occasion ... I really love coats ... 😁

Well, I haven't been for years, so I don't know if the clothing on offer in the actual store reflects the larger & better selection on their website, or is more tailored to tourists. Bear in mind too that a large proportion of what's on their website is neither Scottish-designed nor Scottish-made! So best check the product info carefully. But if you're in the area, then yes I would say have a look! (And report back here on what you think!)

What kind of "good quality Scottish clothes" do you want? The classics - tweed jackets, cashmere jumpers etc? Female, or male too? And where else will you be?

I can't recommend much past Edinburgh & maybe Glasgow, but maybe you should post a question on here for advice? As there are some contributors who have a much better knowledge of Scottish knitwear & tailoring etc than I do. I'm probably better with the quirkier, more modern designers?

StylishAndBeautiful · 22/09/2026 14:05

I like a coat too but they seem to be navy, olive green or black.
I don't wear them much.
None of them are not 'practical' but I can see myself looking like the woman in the Scottish Widows (?) adverts. Reality would be akin to 'Cathy Earnshaw's fat nan's housekeeper', I expect.

Pac-a-mac usually in my bag.Women's UV Protection Pocketable Parka | UNIQLO UK or a longer patterned one.

I loved her black velvet cape! Modelled, I think, on Meryl Streep in The French Lieutenant's Woman, which was a favourite book & film of mine in my 20s. So much so that we made a detour to Lyme Regis when we were in the area so that I could stand on the Cobb - not wearing a hooded cape though!

It was on display (the Scottish Widows one) in the National Museum of Scotland at one time.

Where to find a wool hooded coat like this please?

Meryl Streep was stunning in that film, it was such a wonderful film, and the book. Me and some friends were OBSESSED with her and the film, we were 21 when it came out and very romantically inclined. I had long red curly hair for years! I was a redhead anyway but added a bit. The curls were permed in sadly. 😂 Such innocent times.

I'm in London and I definitely need a winter coat! I don't use a car, so I'm frequently walking to and from/waiting for buses, tubes etc.
I also like the look of a good wool coat, more than practical waterproofs (although I do have raincoats for when they're necessary).

Me too! Long strawberry blonde hair that I dyed redder, & permed - as everyone did back then!

When I stopped perming it, I realised my natural hair was actually very wavy anyway! Now back to the strawberry blonde - but need a helping hand with that these days, as the grey is taking over ...

StylishAndBeautiful · 22/09/2026 17:59

@AlwaysExtraHot , I commute to London and walk everywhere if possible. I fid the tube hot. I very rarely go on buses.
A coat does look better.

Jumpers and skirts. And jackets for my husband. But I know it is v expensive. We couldn’t believe the prices when we went to Inverness last year. £200 plus for a hand-knitted jumper. Fair enough though.
We will be heading over to Oban and Mull too! Can’t wait. Clothing is just a bonus.

That's a duffle coat?

And it's not lined. Not going to be very warm if we have a cold snap.

Mumblechum0 · 22/09/2026 21:54

Just ordered the bottle green in a 12, red was out of stock in 12 so,I’ve optimistically ordered a 10. Also in SE, drive everywhere and am veering away from very warm coats as I just don’t need them for anything other than the rare very cold day

Several of my coats & jackets are unlined (boiled wool or double-faced wool/cashmere).

Even in Edinburgh in cold weather, they're plenty warm for me - I just wear lots of layers.
