Winter coat for Yr 7 boy - what will be non-cringe?

Grateful if folk more clued up than me could advise - I need a new winter coat for DS1 who is in Yr7. As a self-confessed nerd, he couldn’t care less about brands, but he does want to fit in.

Following on from the cracking advice from MNers that I received about school trainers (Nike Airforce Ones), can you recommend a decent coat that will not attract any adverse comment?

Happy to pay for North Face or similar price point (prob through Vinted) as long as it’s decent quality and warm and will not get him picked on.

It’s a rural state secondary, if that’s relevant 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thank you heaps in advance. 🍰

my son would deep down love to be super cosy but, now he’s in year 8, he has to pretend to be all tough and just like the terrifying year 10s that get his bus. Therefore, the black generic Nike puffer it is 🙄. He keeps angling me to buy anything from jd sports so that he can stick his pe kit in the carrier bag.

Get the cool carrier bag! I'm still not quite over my mum dropping my pe kit off at school in a kwik save one in 1998. (After I forgot it and she went out of her way to pack it and bring it in so i didn't get in trouble, yes i was an ungrateful brat)

The coat was a success! He now looks like every other kid, which is obviously 😵‍💫 because he is my precious angelic baybee, but in the grand scheme of things is a total win 🏆
Many thanks to all commenters and I hope this thread is useful to other mums of nerds in the future until fashion changes and they’re all in Paddington duffel coats 😊

Go and buy just the carrier bag and put it in his stocking!

My “terrifying” Y12 DS has always gone for cosy over cool, and has had a series of Regatta parkas that he had chosen since primary school. DDY9 jumped on an old Berghaus Goretex jacket with zip in fleece of mine with glee, declaring it “so on trend”. OK then… Maybe I’m too old, their school is too rural or their bus journey too chilly to be too fashion driven, although there are plenty of North Face/Nike/Adidas/
Under Armour black puffers, invisibly walking the country lanes home from school in the dark evenings.

Embrace the nerdiness!

I get wanting to be one of the crowd at Y7, but by Y9/10 my nerdy/not team-sporty DS owned it with panache.

Great to hear that! It is a minefield that my parents got wrong every time!
