Winter coat for Yr 7 boy - what will be non-cringe?

Grateful if folk more clued up than me could advise - I need a new winter coat for DS1 who is in Yr7. As a self-confessed nerd, he couldn’t care less about brands, but he does want to fit in.

Following on from the cracking advice from MNers that I received about school trainers (Nike Airforce Ones), can you recommend a decent coat that will not attract any adverse comment?

Happy to pay for North Face or similar price point (prob through Vinted) as long as it’s decent quality and warm and will not get him picked on.

It’s a rural state secondary, if that’s relevant 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thank you heaps in advance. 🍰

Sports direct - any plain sport brand -Nike, Nike air Jordan, under armour, adidas (puma at a push) Not trespass or karrimor

I checked and there I good choice on there. Just be careful as they don’t do returns!

RocknRollBand · 17/11/2025 18:05

Exactly what @mydogisanidiottsays. And not too bulky so it can be hauled around all day at school.

Comedycook · 17/11/2025 18:05

I'd say any black puffer type coat from sports direct would be fine. My ds had a non branded one for years and no issues. He now has a Nike one..which I got on vinted for £30. Was over £100 new.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 17/11/2025 18:06

Nike puffer. They’re £57 in sports direct.

TokyoSushi · 17/11/2025 18:09

DS is Yr10 though, agree the Nike would be better for Yr7

OrdinaryGirl · 17/11/2025 22:33

Thank you all VERY much for this. You have saved me so much faffing and agonising! 🥰
I really am grateful 💐

Just be careful to name the thing otherwise it will get lost in seconds. Boys black puffer jackets disappear into the same vortex as Kirby grips and hair elastics.

I spent £57 on the generic Nike one that all boys have at some stage in year 7. It lasted 72 hrs- never saw it again. I just buy them on Vinted now.

Comeonbabyblue · 17/11/2025 22:51

Zavetti is a winner here

TulipDragonfly · 17/11/2025 22:53

Black. Slightly puffy (according to my very cool teenage dd when shopping for her yr 7 brother - it must NOT BE TOO PUFFY) .

Nike or North Face.

Landlubber2019 · 17/11/2025 22:53

Napajuri raincoat, very lightweight so can be stuffed into a bag when not worn. Previously had zavetti but never worn as too big and bulky and no locker at school.

My boy is year 6 and I’ve just got him this which he likes and is super cosy.

my son would deep down love to be super cosy but, now he’s in year 8, he has to pretend to be all tough and just like the terrifying year 10s that get his bus. Therefore, the black generic Nike puffer it is 🙄. He keeps angling me to buy anything from jd sports so that he can stick his pe kit in the carrier bag.

TokyoSushi · 18/11/2025 07:30

Oh @Dabralorplease buy something from JD, it really is the only PE bag to have! 😄 (Cool Yr10 son owner here)

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/11/2025 07:35

following as I have a y8 lad who has no idea what is/isn’t trendy!

OrdinaryGirl · 21/11/2025 22:41

I bought this Under Armour one on Vinted in the end - I do hope it’s ok. Hopefully it fits the bill of puffy but not so puffy he looks like a stick of black candy floss. Will report back once it’s arrived and been worn 🕵🏼‍♀️

That looks like a good choice op. My 15yr old won't entertain the idea of a coat at all, and we live ins Scotland! It was minus six this morning 🥶.

My 11yr old has a north face puffa jacket, but still at primary school.

The mountain warehouse suggested above would not be the done thing here, both of them would rather catch hypothermia than wear Mountain Warehouse, Trespass or Karrimore.

cinnamongirl123 · 22/11/2025 00:08

Black puffer from Vinted - Zavetti, Nike, North Face, Under Armour

elevenpiperspiping · 22/11/2025 08:12

That will be perfect

ohwoaw · 22/11/2025 11:30

Wow I didn’t realise under armour was so pricey. I thought it was a crappy sports direct brand. Maybe it’s changed in recent years!

elevenpiperspiping · 22/11/2025 13:32

@ohwoawthat coat would be over £100 new.

Fernleigh22 · 22/11/2025 13:39

@OrdinaryGirlyou sound like the sweetest mum. That coat looks perfect

OrdinaryGirl · 22/11/2025 15:24

Aaahh how lush are you guys 🥰 Bloody love Mumsnet

@elevenpiperspipingwow I am a bit clueless then. My 2 are much younger but need to get with it in a few years then.

Pearlmaster500 · 22/11/2025 20:33

Defo north face or Nike if you want cheaper
