It’s all great, and they are all good classic pieces that will last for ages. Get a cream floaty skirt andtop to mix and match and you’ll have several outfits for the summer.

Cyclingmummy1 · 12/04/2025 08:13

Bin the top. Love the jacket though!

Assuming you haven’t started this thread for a laugh, @theressomanytinafeysicouldbe - it’s a perfectly fine outfit if your aim is to look as boringly dressed as you possibly can be.

I assume you mentioned being a grandmother because it’s a children’s party? The good thing about your chosen items is that they’re all easily washable (not the footwear and bag) but that’s the best that could be said about them.

If you want to make the outfit more exciting choose one piece of clothing in a different fabric and texture. Why not a pink sequinned skirt? Or silky palazzo pants in a brighter pink print? Or wear the jacket with a linen sundress?

(You did ask. I’m years and years older and wouldn’t consider such a drab outfit.)

Rather a rude reply!! We are not all the same and don't want to dress the same. I wouldn't be seen dead in sequinned anything, nor would I ever wear palazzo pants.

Presumably OP has chosen the clothes she has because she likes them rather than aiming to "look as boring dressed" as she possibly can be.

Derailing somewhat, but how do you pronounce ‘nana’? As in banana? Or as in ‘nanna’?

It’s not a term we’ve ever used in my family.

You pronounce it exactly the same as Nanna. Which is what made me laugh when a pp said that Nana sounds like a 'twit' and she could never possibly be a Nana but was very happy to be a Nanna 🙈🤣

FeedTheRoses · 12/04/2025 11:29

I don’t think at 50 you should describe yourself as a Nana !!! But the outfit is lovely.

You are a fabulous woman.

Nana is an awful description, even if you have grandchildren.

SunnieShine · 12/04/2025 11:32

That outfit is just right. I love pink, especially the jacket.

What?? How can Nana be an 'awful description'? Whst a strange thing to say.

abracadabra1980 · 12/04/2025 12:36

I thinks it's regional - I've heard it many times in the north east.

EmpressaurusKitty · 12/04/2025 12:51

When I was a child, my grandmothers were Granny & Grandma & Nana was Granny’s mother, so it sounds older to me, but it’s obviously going to be different for every family.

XiCi · 12/04/2025 13:03

I think the OPs description of being a nana has really hit a nerve with some posters that still have youngish children in their late 40s as being a nana seems so far off. Like it's a bit of a reality check on how old you actually are because others are in a different stage of life. I had my kids from 40 onwards so have young teens in my early 50s but there are plenty of my friends and family that are the same age and younger that are grandparents. Just because you have younger kids it doesn't make you magically younger than the OP. A woman in her late 40s is middle aged regardless of how old you feel or how old your children are. The OP clearly stated she was a nana because she was looking for advice for an outfit for her grandchild's birthday party so really no need for all the spikiness and snidey comments. She didn't ask for advice on what her grandchildren call her. That's nobodys business

Lovely outfit. Age has absolutely nothing to do with it unless you planned on wearing a micro mini skirt & crop top😂The days of older women dressing in twin sets & pearls are thankfully over. It's simply down to fashionable cothes that suit you regardless of age.

Elphen · 12/04/2025 13:21

They look great, totally appropriate for anyone. Go for it.

DitheringBlidiot · 12/04/2025 13:26

The top I think is quite aging, the ruffles are a bit “granny on holiday” and you might be a nana but you are not old.

the jacket I really like, I’m 37 and I’d wear it. The jeans are nice too but it’s all quite light. I think either wear a nicely fitted plain white t shirt or sightly darker jeans. M&S do nice t shirts.

Get the bag if you like it and will wear it again, but £60 on a new bag seems a bit mad when the whole outfit won’t cost much more than that. Personally I think a handbag you already own will probably be fine.

Have a look at some of the models on other websites and see if there’s anything you like that look of that you can imagine yourself wearing. I have to say it but I think the style of clothes at Matalan can be a bit “mumsy”

To be fair I think the terms 'grannyish' & 'mumsy' are derogatory to women. It's insinuating becoming a mother or grandmother means you are perceived as dowdy & unfashionable. Utter nonsense considering there are grandmothers in their 30s & 40s albeit less common nowadays.

You’re absolutely right, thank you for pointing it out to me so respectfully. (I hope this doesn’t come across as sarcastic, I don’t mean it to be.)

Definitely something for me to think about!

OnGoldenPond · 12/04/2025 14:30

You are very young to be a grandmother in your 40s, so don’t use that label as your style guide!

I wouldn’t even use age to guide your style choices. Instead be guided by what suits your body shape and expresses your personality.

I’m ten years older than you and would see those items as too old for me. Probably the all over baby pink and the over fussy frilly sleeves which aren’t things I like. I would advise you to choose what you love and don’t be looking to put artificial limits on yourself. Enjoy the party! 🥳

The outfit is lovely, I'd swap the ruffled t shirt for a v neck t shirt but that's because I don't like ruffles. But apart from that, it's a lovely outfit.

That’s what I think, I’m 44 and got kids in infant school, as have most of my friends. Forget being a Nana, you’re a woman in your 40s.

These comments are missing the point. She is a grandmother of 3. It doesn't matter how many of you have young children at her age, she calls herself a nana because that is what she is!!

Yes, but what bearing does that have on what she wears? Although I do get the part about needing to wear stuff she can play with her grandkids in.

Empress13 · 13/04/2025 08:48

Looks fab have a great time !

XiCi · 13/04/2025 10:26

Yes, but what bearing does that have on what she wears

Because she has asked for advice on something to wear that is suitable for her grandchild's party. One where she will likely have to wade into a ball pit and be going down slides in a soft play followed by a meal with all the family in a chain pub. That does limit you quite a bit in outfit choices.

Yes, that’s true.
