Why are slippers sexist

mumofboysinlondon · 02/12/2024 12:10

I would like slippers that are:

  1. not furry/ fluffy, so I can wear them in warmer weather
  2. have proper soles (for taking the bins out and padding around on my uncarpeted floors etc)
  3. are plain-ish and not something my grandma would wear (sorry Nan)

I am a woman in my late 30s and a UK size 4 (37) and all I can find that fits the bill are men’s slippers?

Something not unlike this would be great (but never seem to come in women’s sizes??):

I wear Birkenstocks in summer and Birkenstock slippers in winter. Comfortable, supportive and not sexist.

menopausalmare · 02/12/2024 12:49

Gumbies.

Whenindoubthugitout · 02/12/2024 12:51

Gumbies all the way.
my first pair still going strong after 9 years

Fannyfiggs · 02/12/2024 12:52

I have inside crocs and outside crocs

AngelsWithSilverWings · 02/12/2024 12:53

Celtic sheepskin slipper boots. They are warm in winter but cool in summer. Me and DH have the same ones as he was moaning about cold feet while working from home. He rolled his eyes when I suggested them but he lives in them now. I can pop out into the garden wearing them no problem even when it's slightly wet outside.

PuppyMonkey · 02/12/2024 12:54

Another vote for moshulu - currently have their Scandi style sheepskin ones. DD aged 17 keeps saying they’re really stylish.Grin

Shepherd of Sweden have lots of lovely women’s slippers that aren’t frou frou. Cheaper than Uggs too.

Birkenstocks

Incakewetrust · 02/12/2024 13:00

I got some fantastic ones from Next a few years ago. They have hard soles and are still going strong.

Moshulu slippers are so comfy and the soles are pretty thick

Lined Birkenstocks or Crocs?

I thought lined crocs were the answer for me, I bought some from Lakeland. All was good until I went arse over tits on my tiled kitchen floor. Just a cautionary tale! I'm back on the hunt for the perfect slippers.

Nichebitch · 02/12/2024 13:08

Another vote for Birkenstocks, I bought mine during the first lockdown and still using them!

Havalona · 02/12/2024 13:08

Don't like booties
Don't (can't) wear backless
Need support on feet.

I get mine in the men's department always. Whatever shop/online suits my needs! Slip on, neutral dark colour, "outside" sole for the bins.... comfortable and sturdy. The ones I'm using now are three years old from Primark. Still going strong and so comfortable.

I'm a size 6 womens so just buy that size in mens and insert an insole if necessary. Extra cushioning, what's not to like!

LouLou789 · 02/12/2024 13:16

Because of a foot problem I need slippers with an enclosed back but open toe plus adjustable width. I wear men’s slippers (size 6) but just not available in smaller sizes. Women’s designs can be so flimsy (or grannyish)
Going to have a look at the suggested brands!

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 02/12/2024 13:17

@mumofboysinlondon I wear padders "repose", size 3 and can only get them on the internet. buy 3 or 4 pairs at a time. perfect for running into the garden with the dogs and putting the bins out. proper sole which is mandatory in my book! try amazon

Would Ugg boots or similar work? Comfy and practical

Too warm I think! I love the look of them but I'm always so hot!

YES this is me. But my feet are too small for the men's department. Sigh.

I wear moshulu slippers. They're really comfy and cosy (I prefer the fur lined ones). They have these that I think fit your bill. I love the bright green ones and the orange, but they also have a more conservative grey.

These look great - I hadn't considered Moshulu. Also quite Birkenstock-esque (thanks to all who suggested those too, I had considered them more of an outside thing but perhaps I should invest...)

I LOVE the look of these but alas, too furry on the inside for my boiling hot feet 😑

Nordika. Best slippers ever.

Totally agree

Huh? There are plenty of practical options available.

I love my mahabis. They've lasted for many years.

Good suggestion but I was hoping for something cheaper (I know, I'm super picky)
