MARMITE: Has the flavour changed?

Threadworm · 16/03/2008 11:10

I have a jar of Marmite which I bought at the same time as the limited edition Champagne Marmite. It is an ordinary jar but the flavour is definitely different from normal.

Is this accidental Champagne contamination, or an official flavour evolution?

Have they slipped in the different flavour on purpose to stimulate an 'I Like Marmite How It Used to Be' viral campaign?

Has anyone else noticed the change?

I haven't bought a new jar but I hope it hasn't changed, I love marmite, didnt fancy the champagne one though

cadelaide · 16/03/2008 11:18

champagne and marmite........ridiculous

cadelaide · 16/03/2008 11:19

will go and taste now.....

cadelaide · 16/03/2008 11:20

....nope.

same as ever.

jar is about 2 months old though.

Threadworm · 16/03/2008 11:21

Hmm. Mine is mid-Feb and is def different. Hope is just Factory Disaster and not policy. Some things should never change.

Hmm my normal marmite tastes the same but the champagne one was horrible! Normal is in a squeezy bottle though not a jar

Threadworm · 17/03/2008 17:33

Must just be me. 'Normal' is not in a squeezy jar, though. Squeezy is abnormal abomination.

Perhaps should send it back and claim victim status/freebies

I know! I am not happy about the squeeziness myself but it was all they had

spudmasher · 17/03/2008 17:46

Nope. Tastes as lovely as always......you're not pre....?sorry

IorekByrnison · 17/03/2008 20:37

Yes!!!

I have noticed the change. I was going to post on this a while ago when I bought the jar (was Jan or Feb). It is definitely different and not very nice. I haven't touched it since the first mouthful.

I have a jar here. Expiry Jun 09. It has a weird undertone of something that is not at all marmitey.

Some of the ingredients listed are a bit vague: "Spice Extracts: contains celery". Do you think it is a new recipe or just a dodgy batch?

IorekByrnison · 17/03/2008 20:50

I've just had another sniff. I thought I caught a trace of vanilla! It's not right. And I have the idea that it is very slightly redder than normal marmite.

CoffeeMad · 17/03/2008 20:54

My dh swears its changed...we only have the squeezy jar/bottle thing and he thought it might be because it is thinner.....???

saltcod · 17/03/2008 21:07

dd had some at a friends last week & wouldn't eat it saying it "tasted different to the one we have at home!". I just told her to stop being silly - marmite is marmite, right?!

But reading this thread, it appears she may have been right

JingleyJen · 17/03/2008 21:08

haven't bought marmite for a while but I love it, if it has changed I will ration the jar we have in the cupboard.. (ie hide it from Dh and the kids )

Threadworm · 17/03/2008 22:32

Oh thank god! Vindication.

Vanilla-ish sounds a plausible account of the alien flavour. And now you mention it, there is perhaps a reddish tinge, though will have to check that.
What is happening?
(Has always had celery I think.)

I've just taste tested the remnants of a Feb 09 alongside a Aug 09. The newer one is definitely lighter and less rich. I wonder if they continue to ferment in the jar - or the sediment sinks to the bottom - or evaporation makes it richer?

Is there a Scientist in the house? (Or a Unilever insider).

fingerwoman · 17/03/2008 22:57

ah ha! it isn't just me then????
I had noticed this, and it def isn't as nice as it used to be.

I had put it down to the manky margarine I am using on my dairy-free diet. but now I am not so sure

IorekByrnison · 18/03/2008 00:03

I've had a thought. I seem to remember that they changed the formula to make it squeezable for the squeezy plastic bottles. Do you think they are now using the same squeezable formula in the glass jars?

IorekByrnison · 18/03/2008 14:55

Can I bump this?

bettythebuilder · 18/03/2008 15:03

I have a newish (last couple of weeks) jar, and it tastes the same as normal marmite, but have to agree that the squeezy marmite def. tasted different. I tried it once, never again.

IorekByrnison · 18/03/2008 15:04

Interesting Betty. Can I ask you what the expiry date is on the jar?

bettythebuilder · 18/03/2008 15:06

just checked, mine is expiry Aug 09.
Maybe there was a factory malfunction?

Threadworm · 18/03/2008 15:08

I have just sent an Official Comment via the Marmite website

Good work, Threadworm. We'll get to the bottom of this.
