Baby clothes and their sizes.... is yoour in the right size for their age?

DS is coming up for 5 months. He's not huge, he's slightly taller than average but not overweight. He is is 6-9 month clothes!?! Are babies getting bigger or are clothes being made smaller?? DD is nearly 3 and does ok in 3-4 clothes - although if the clothes are from next the trousers are too long and the tops are to small!!! Anyone else noticed this?

Hi! My ds is 7 months and is in 9-12 month vests and sleepsuits! T-shirts and jumpers last longer though as they seem to be huge on him. Last time he was weighed he was on 95th centile for height so i guess his legs are just too long to fit into the 6-9 month sleep suits!

dt1 is in 3-6 month clothes. dt2 is in 12-18 month clothes. She is the dainty twin sitting very happily on the 2nd centile whilst Max is on the 95th and enjoying every minute.

Ha, you're joking!
My DS is also comingup to 5 months, and has been in 6-9 month clothes for ages. BUT, my older children were in 6-9 month sizes until they were almost 1. Thus, at 3 months old, DS2 was wearing clothes that his big brother used to walk around in. So I know the babies aren't changing, nor are the clothes sizes, just different babies come in different sizes.

ps: zephyr... my just turned 3yo is still in 12-18m size trousers -- they are too short, but the 18-24m size are both too long & too big in the waist. I think your kids are maybe all quite long/tall?

DS is 16m and currently a H&M 9-12m size and still wearing some 6-9month tops with only a little midriff showing when he lifts his arms - bought him some 12-18m tops from there yesterday that almost reach his knees - i reckom he's been about 2/3 sized from the off But just like adult clothes - sizing varies so much from store to store

dd is 18 months still in 9-12 month clothes (and has been since she was less than 9 months!)_

DD is on the 98th centile for height, but is still in 12-18 month trousers at 22 months. The reason? Like her father, she has a long body and shortish legs. Her tops are age 2-3 years and quite a few of them are already too small. But the sleeves of tops for 3-4 year olds are far too long. Ir makes web-shopping a bit of a guessing game.

ds is just 3, and mostly in 3-4, or 4-5 tops, but only 2-3 trousers, as he's so skinny they all sit on his hips adding a couple of inches to the length!

Different companies use different sizes for ages. For instance Vertbaudet they have small sizes for ages IYSWIM and I always had to buy clothes for the next age group up.

Now my dd is just 7 and I regularly buy her age 9 clothes for length and then use belts on trousers as they would fall down (she's tall and slim)
Ds is 22 months and wears some age 3 clothes, but still fits in a few things that are 12-18m.
I think it really is trial and error and you work out eventually which shops are more generous in their sizings than others.

I always find baby clothes for my DD (5mths) are too small or too big and only just right for a very short moment! What ever happened to baby grows that GROW with the baby? I find DD needs bigger sizes because she wears 'real' nappies giving her a bottom heavy appearence!

DS is 11.5 months and in some 9-12 month clothes and some 6-9 month clothes. But some clothes despite being for the same length and weight seem to be much bigger - and he is too big for Tescos 6-9 month babygros and too small for 9-12 month ones...

at 5months dd2 was wearing clothes for 12months +, dd1 on the other hand was fitting neatly into 0-3month stuff still.

now they are older, dd1 is wearing at 4-5, she is now 4.5yrs old. dd2 is 2years 2months and also wears clothes for 4-5yr olds. some trousers need to be taken up, but thats for both girls, they both have short legs lol.

My dd2 is 5 months old and in 3-6 month clothes. dd1 is 7 and most of her clothes are 5-6 years most of which she's been wearing for nearly 2 years. She seems to grow quite slowly. If I get her trousers from Next I have to get an age 6 as an age 7 is too long but the age 6 is too big around the waist thankfully Next have started putting those elastic adjustment strips into their trousers so we can draw them in.

DS1 is 3.5 and is in age 2 trousers and 2-3 tops. He's on the 9th centile (well, last time I looked and I can't remember when that was!). DS2 is 2 (just) and is in 12-18 months in some things, 18-24 in others and 2-3 in others.

It all depends where you buy stuff. I find Next stuff quite big.

Yes and no. DS is 14 months, and can fit in (US) sizes 12-18 months, 18-24 months and 2T, depending on the brand. Isn't it silly how varied the sizes are between different brands?

DS1 (6) is going into 8/9 yrs atm although I find he has to wear a belt as the waists are a bit big. 7/8s are too short in the leg and the arm.

DD has been in 12/18 mths for the last couple of months - she was 1 last week, but I'm starting to find that some her trousers are getting too small, although all her tops are fine (some are baggy still!) She's got very long legs.

DS2(4) is my Mr Average (dead on 50th centile, the other two are 95 and 91) and is wearing a mixture of 3/4 and 4/5. He takes after me, long body and (proportionately) short legs!

Ds is 3 months & in all 6-9 month clothes - admittedly he's 98th percentile for weight, height, you name it. Side effect of having giant parents (I'm nearly 6', dh is taller).

My 3 year old came home from the zoo in a pair of trousers that were 3-6 month size, wearing them as shorts! Honestly! I think different manufacturers have different sizes. So in JL, ds is 18-24 month, in Next he is 3-4. Dd who is 15 months is still wearing 6-9 month clothes from Mothercare, or 18-24 month clothes from JMB. I don't think it matters - I find it a total nightmare shopping for ds, as he is tall and skinny, and his trousers always fall down, so if I find some that fit, I don't worry about what size they are, I just celebrate!

DS is 2y 3m and just moved into 2-3 year sizes but he's always been a tall boy. Different manufacturers definitely make a difference and I've noticed that the nationality of the clothes makes a difference too. French baby clothes like Petit Bateau are tiny and US clothes like Gap seem to run big on DS.

dd 2.11 tried on some old leggings size 3-6 months I got out for ds, 9 weeks. And she fit them! Very nice cycling shorts on her! She's a petite little thing and could still wear clothes size 12-18 months, but they're too short. Thankfully she's still wearing a nappy so 18-24months trousers stay up, otherwise no hope in... My dad brought me some cool trousers from Germany though... they've got an adjustable elastic in the waist like maternity trousers! So the length is right and they fit at the waist! Now why don't they do that as standard!?

My dd has always needed at least one size bigger clothes than her age. She's 3.5 now, and her 4 - 5 stuff is too short for her. The problem is that she's very slim, so her waist is too skinny for bigger skirts and trousers, and the arms are too long in bigger tops.

DD is just turned 6 months and is around 50th centile for weight .. I find she just about fits in 6 - 9 month mothercare sleepsuits once they've been washed once

.. don't ever buy anything in france though .. they seem to have long skinny babies and DD's lovely round tummy just bursts the poppers of an up to a year suit

No....ds is 18 months. Is wearing anywhere between 6-12 month clothes depending on manufacturer........He has no waist to speak of so trousers just head south on him...however has big head and big feet(1.5-2yrs for hats and socks)

My 16 month old is in 6-9 or 9-12 month clothes, excluding the John Lewis 3-6 months trousers she's wearing today. My three year old has been known to wear 18 month old trousers/skirts, or 2-3 year old tops/tights.

Being only 5ft tall myself, I kind of think of this as normal...
