DS is coming up for 5 months. He's not huge, he's slightly taller than average but not overweight. He is is 6-9 month clothes!?! Are babies getting bigger or are clothes being made smaller?? DD is nearly 3 and does ok in 3-4 clothes - although if the clothes are from next the trousers are too long and the tops are to small!!! Anyone else noticed this?

DS has always been a size bigger in the tops than trousers. He is 3.9 and 3-4 trousers are massive on him but tops are OK. He's still got some age 1-2 shorts that he was able to wear this summer - but thats because they are designed to be worn with a nappy I guesss and the length is not an issue.

DD is 25%ile (I think) and will be 6 months on Monday. She has been wearing 6-9 vests for a while and also quite a lot of 6-9 tops but I think this is because they are hand-me-downs and have shrunk in the wash (the sleeves tend to be too long). Just started her in hand-me-down M&S sleepsuits which fit perfectly apart from the sleeves are a bit long but this is no bad thing when she's in a sleeping bag because her hands do tend to get very cold.

She was in 0-3 stuff until about 4.5 months so spent very little time in 3-6 stuff which is good because all her birth presents were nb/0-3 but the hand-me-downs started at 6-9.

my dd is coming up to 10 mths and 12-18 mths clothes from mostly everywhere are small on her!!! the arms have to be turned up though lol. she is tall and i am now buying 18-24mths she is on the 91st centile for weight and height. thing is from that she probably sounds obese lol!! he isnt everyone gets a shock when i tell them and when they pick her up!!! i last had her weighed 3 wks ago and she was 22lb!! i think next clothes sizes are ridiculously small!!! xx

lenaw · 11/11/2004 13:33

lilsmum! thanks for your post - i thought my dd is too big! 14 mo, don't know her weight, but was about 22 lb at 10 mo.
my s-i-l loves buying her gap clothes - dd grown out of their 18-24 range.

sophsicles · 11/11/2004 13:36

Yes especially with next stuff i find the trousers too long yet i find ladybird tops fits forever! My little ones 10 months and still fits in their 3 month tops and she is a bigish baby i must be honest Marks and Spencers stuff and Tescos have always fit her best.

throckenholt · 11/11/2004 13:37

Mine usually have tops in the size above their age and bottoms in the size smaller. Always the arms and legs are too long

nailpolish · 11/11/2004 13:39

my 25 month old dd is still wear12-18 month trousers. she has a tiny bum but is not small for her age. i too find the sleeves always too long

muddaofsuburbia · 11/11/2004 13:47

Last summer ds was 10 mths and all the shorts/t-shirt etc I stocked up on had to be aged 2-3. Fortunately his rapid growth evened out and he wore all the same clothes again this summer aged 22 months!

Very considerate of my bank balance I thought

He's now just 2 and in aged 2-3 stuff atm which is a /perfect/ fit in the waist and leg length. That probably means he'll be in age 3-4 stuff aged 2.5 though!

Pumpkin Patch is great for trousers, but I find their tops are way too tiny.
Tescos are good.
Asda tops are good but bottoms are too small.
Adams are too narrow in the bottoms but tops are good.
Vertbaudet are good if you buy the next size up.

nailpolish · 11/11/2004 13:51

now im worried that dd IS to small for her age everyone else seems to think their clothes are too small

muddaofsuburbia · 11/11/2004 13:55

Nailpolish - don't worry my ds towers over all his peers at toddler group, and most of the older kids too. He's way at the top of the centile chart and I'm sure some of the others on this thread are too. The more average children probably fit into the perfect age clothes and so have nothing to moan about (except the appalling choice of colours for boys!)

nailpolish · 11/11/2004 13:55

thanks

subs · 11/11/2004 14:15

my dd is 16 months now, and still in 6-9 month stuff - no drama (except for health visitors complaining about her size, but she is so fine) but she eats for england and is still so diddy and i a size 16 so getting lots of (amusing - can your hear my gritted teeth) comments about how she didnt inherit my metabolism..... hahahaha

tabitha · 11/11/2004 14:23

dd is 9 months and still fits into a lot of her 3-6 month stuff (tops or bottoms but not babygros as they are too short), despite being on the 75 centile for both height and weight!
I bought her some 9-12month Next sleepsuits and they are masses too long on the legs. In fact the combination of this and laminate floors caused her to slip when 'cruising' round the furniture have a nasty accident.

acnebride · 11/11/2004 14:31

ds at 10 months is routinely in 12 - 18 month clothes but all the trousers are too long, however, it's the only way to get them over his cloth nappies. I have to say i also dislike getting him into clothes so will tend to go for a 'generous' fit, whereas the shops may be assuming a close fit. he's also in 4.5 shoes which seems quite big for his age. but dh is 6'4 and both of us are generously proportioned

WestCountryLass · 11/11/2004 23:10

Hehehe, well my 4 month DD is in 9-12months clothes and 12+ months sleepsuits - sh is a big girl!

pixel · 12/11/2004 00:37

I always find the clothes too big. I've just bought a fleecy sleepsuit for ds (to keep his feet warm!)who is 4.5 and the label says 2-3 years. My dd's new school trousers say 5-6 but she is nearly 9.

I do feed them, honest!

fisil · 12/11/2004 07:55

DS is not only on the 9th centile for height, but also has his dad's figure (very long body, very very short legs). Luckily this saves money on both clothes and DNA tests!

He wore the same shorts & shirts this summer (when he was c. 18 months) as last (c. 6 months) and most of his winter clothes are last year's too.

It is good for his vocabulary - he knows advanced words like "turn ups" and phrases like "roll up sleeves please".

We had 4 weddings & a funeral this summer, so I bought him a pair of trousers to fit perfectly (usually I just buy them too big and let him grow into them over a year or so!) - and I had to buy 9-12 months!

bubsylocket · 12/11/2004 19:01

Like you Zephyrcat I too find the clothes from Next are too long and tops too small. When I buy from other places I have to buy my dd clothes 3-4 and she will be 3 next week. God knows who these manufactures base these clothes on !!!!

hana · 12/11/2004 19:10

I don't think anything I've bought for dd has been the right size for her age! I've been caught out so many times buying things for her only to get them home and find out they won't fit her for another 2 years.......I now carry a pair of her trousers and top in my bag if I'm out shopping!

linniewith2 · 12/11/2004 21:08

dd1 aged 27 mnth can still fit in to 9-12 mnth clothes but mainly wears 12-18 occasionaly 18-24 she sits on the 50th centle !

prefernot · 12/11/2004 21:16

My 2 year old dd is mostly in 12-18 month old clothes. I can't think of anything she wears that's bigger than that. I keep wondering if they're making the clothes bigger! Especially trouser lengths which seem absurdly long on her.

Had some Gap dungarees for DD who wore them at about 12-18 months. DS wore them at 3-6 months and the label said 3-6 months.

DS now 12 months and wearing 18-24 months tops and 6-12 months trousers!! on 95th centile but short legs and long body like his mother poor thing...

DD now 3 and half and wears size 3-4 tops, 2-3 trousers and pjs.
agree about Verbudet have to buy the next size up.
Tescos are always massive..

Rarrie · 14/11/2004 00:10

NO way! At 12months and 5 days, my ds is wearing 3-6 months tops and 6-9months trousers, except when she is in cloth nappies - she may then wear 9-12 months. Cloths for 21-18months (her age) are twice the size she actually needs!
