Recommendations for a new digital camera?

I've had a digital video camera for ages but so far haven't succumbed to getting a digital stills camera. And I don't know where to start!

I'd be uploading the pictures to a mac so it'd have to be compatible with that. I'll only be using it for general home / family /snaps use. And I'd like to spend less than £200, preferably much less.

Any tips?

Hello, if

Do you want a dinky one you can stick in your pocket, or a big beefy one?

imaginaryfriend · 03/12/2007 23:50

Hello!
Dinky one ideally.

Hiya there, we've just bought a Canon Ixus 75 and very impressed with it. It's small and compact, photo quality is great, video quality is superb (much much better than our previous - an olympus mju 720) and it's easy to use

Thanks, all suggestions gratefully received! I stood in a few shops today with not a clue which one to go for really. How much was this one?

I can 2nd the Canon, I got it for my bday in sept. FANTASTIC!

WendyWeber · 04/12/2007 20:06

DS1 got the Fuji E820 recently and is v pleased with it - only £80 and it has a lovely big screen.

It doesn't have a viewfinder though and on sunny days it can be v hard to see the screen; but the more I looked the less I found ones with a viewfinder, so there were a couple more I found that sound quite good although I can't give a personal recommendation.

This Panasonic is £190 but has 10x optical zoom which is mega - most have 3-4.

This Olympus is £140 with a 5x optical zoom.

Whatever you get you will need to buy a memory card (but they are v cheap now) and some rechargeable batteries + a charger. Oh, and a case.

HTH

(NB I have NO IDEA if these are compatible with Mac or not, sorry! But I would have thought the software was universal?)

The Ixus 75 is £129 - only 3x optical zoom though.

naturopath · 04/12/2007 20:20

The Sony Cybershot ones are good

imaginaryfriend · 04/12/2007 22:00

The Canon one looks quite good I think but I can't work out if the software that comes with it is suitable for pc only and not mac.

Also ... durrr ... what kind of battery charger should I get?

WW, I also like that Olympus one.

How the heck do you decide on these things?!? It was all so much easier with an SLR ...

Something like this, if.

There are lots of alternatives. Most of these cameras just use 2 at a time, and the chargers will charge 2 or 4 at a time, so you can always have at least 1 pair charged and ready

Naetha · 04/12/2007 22:52

The Ixus 75 comes with a charger for the battery which is camera specific.

The advantage we found with the Canon over the Olympus, was that it used SD cards rather than XD cards - these are a LOT cheaper, so for the same price you can get a 4GB SD card as for a 512MB XD card so can take lots more photos and plenty of videos too.

Naetha · 04/12/2007 22:54

Oh, and according to this site, is compatible with MACs:

Sorry - I promise I'll shut up now!

imaginaryfriend · 05/12/2007 00:09

Naetha, that's it, you've sold it! I'll head out and get one tomorrow. Do you think they all come with the charger or just some deals?

OP posts:
Dropdeadfred · 05/12/2007 08:22

They all come with the charger.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 05/12/2007 09:56

I just got a Canon PowerShot A570 IS
and really like it.

WendyWeber · 05/12/2007 10:05

That's a big clonky one though, beety - she wants a little one (and it's over £200!)

Beetroot · 05/12/2007 10:31

WW it is not clunky really - it is fabulous - I guess it depends what you want it for and it is only just over 200.

SantasSmartArse · 05/12/2007 10:33

I've got a Panasonic something-or-other. Recent birthday present, absolutely amazing photos and fantastic zoom. Was about £230 on Pixmania, I think.

Still haven't learnt how to up/download photos, though!
