Thinking of getting a Tesla and would love to know your pros and cons. Looking at a Model 3 long range.

I hate them for no rational reason, sorry!

IheartJKR · 07/06/2021 20:54

We have a model S. we’ve had it for 4 years and we love it.
We’ve had no problems with it, it’s the best car we’ve ever owned.
A couple of years ago we drove all over the south of France on holiday with it. Excellent 🥰

workingtowards · 07/06/2021 20:56

We bought a model 3 a couple of months ago and absolutely love it. It’s the best car we’ve ever had. It is so quiet, but super powerful. The super chargers are great - we’ve not had an issue with charging. The eye for detail is fab. It’s like the equivalent of driving an iMac. The car unlocks itself, pops out its wing mirrors, and seats and heating adjust for you as you approach. There is wireless charging for your phones. Autopilot is fab in a traffic jam. If you get the upgrade, you can even summon it to come and get you in the car park. Would highly recommend. Prepare yourself for lots of questions from interested passers by.

workingtowards · 07/06/2021 20:58

You can even watch Netflix and play video games on the screen when you are parked up. Kids love it too. We are smitten!

Notsogreenthumb · 07/06/2021 23:18

I second @idontlikealdi

Having said that, we have a model 3 (the husband loves it lol).

Pros: super smooth
environmental friendly
cheaper on fuel
boot space is great

Cons:
charging is a bloody hassle even with super chargers (unless you have one built at home it's useless, also heading towards the southern end of the country there aren't many Tesla chargers (I know there are 3rd party companies available)
It's autobraked on the motorway a couple times without any reason and almost caused serious collisions (try signing to peed off drivers that it was the car not you)
I don't think it's great being around that much radiation personally but I have nothing to back that (scientifically I mean). For me it's just a con to be in a literal WiFi bubble, with inbuilt charging, bluetooth etc I know all cars have it but the Tesla just seems that bit more and I hate that it's so minimalistic looking. Guess I love good old petrol/diesel cars but that's just personal preference not a real con.

Thanks everyone! We have a 4x4 now and am a little worried about being so low down - no reason but does that bother anyone else? And the windows aren’t tinted which is a big annoying, unless I’m wrong.

Does the Tesla have One Pedal?

OP posts:
IheartJKR · 08/06/2021 08:15

No it has two. Go & stop Grin

It also has a regenerative braking system which takes a little while to get used to but helps for a smoother drive. Once you get used to it you almost never have to use the brake pedal!

Randommother · 08/06/2021 08:25

Have you taken one out for a test drive yet OP? If not, then I'd definitely recommend it. I wanted a model 3, took one for a test drive, now I really really want it!!

workingtowards · 08/06/2021 09:08

Once you get in one, I can almost guarantee that you will want to buy one. It is such a smooth silent powerful ride. It doesn’t feel low down. I am 54 and can get in and out without any oof noises.

workingtowards · 08/06/2021 09:13

Back seats are very spacious too (no mechanics sticking up in the middle, so lots of leg room). Sorry - you can tell we love it.

jaundicedoutlook · 08/06/2021 19:42

Not got one, but there are a few things that put me off a bit.

  1. Musk seems a bit of a berk
  2. Some Teslas that I’ve seen on the streets appear to have some quality control issues - big panel gaps being the most noticeable
  3. I’m not a huge fan of a lot of automated systems in a car. Our BMW has auto parking and I’ve never felt comfortable with it. Similarly the auto braking and lane departure systems can be alarming and we’ve switched them down to min levels of intervention. Tesla seems much more keen on this sort of intrusive experience, which would make me nervous.
workingtowards · 09/06/2021 08:42

It is certainly true that Elon Musk is a bit of a berk Grin. It's also true that there were some issues with panel gaps on the earlier models, but they seem to have sorted this out on the Model 3.

workingtowards · 09/06/2021 08:53

Actually, I've just realised this is a public forum, and on the off chance that Elon's lawyers are browsing, let me retract and rephrase that to 'Elon Musk's behaviour is seen by some to be a bit erratic'.

1000glitterydicks · 09/06/2021 08:56

I really want one. I can't have the regen braking on (when I test drive it) because it makes me feel sick but it drives like a "normal" car without it.
Me and my other half just need to work out if it will save us enough money to warrant the hefty price tag.

coogee · 09/06/2021 09:05

I hate that it's so minimalistic looking.

We have had a look at a few electric cars and there does seem to be a trend to nail an iPad to the middle of the dash and then give up.

ToTeslaOrNot · 09/06/2021 18:00

I think we will get one. Thanks for the comments.

Just ordered a model 3 and am excited. Bit worried about boot space and running out of charge - although i got the long range one - but having driven a friend's I agree with the person who said it's like a mac - feels more like a beautiful piece of Tech than a car.

ToTeslaOrNot · 11/06/2021 17:44

What colour did you get Berta? I was worried about boot space but then saw a man get in the front boot on you tube!

OP posts:
Randommother · 12/06/2021 07:46

I've just ordered one too! Getting a model 3 long range in red. I didn't go for the enhanced auto pilot option though, I decided it wasn't worth the extra cost. Next step, get a home charger installed...

Notsogreenthumb · 12/06/2021 08:20

@coogee that's exactly how I described it. Completely plain with a massive iPad stuck in the centre.

WhyDoesItAlways · 12/06/2021 10:06

I looked at a model 3 yesterday and have a test drive booked for next week.

The boot space didn't concern me at all. It's much bigger than I expected. Apparently they fit a mattress and people sleep in them with the seats folded down.

I'm a bit anti too much automation so hoping some of those breaking options are optional. Won't be buying the extra auto pilot stuff but it's nice to know it's still an option after purchase if we change our minds.

Notsogreenthumb · 12/06/2021 12:56

@WhyDoesItAlways there's a lot of boot space, it's much deeper than it first looks. There's also the frunk (front trunk) as extra storage since there's no engine

ToTeslaOrNot · 13/06/2021 10:15

I’m at the Tesla dealer now….

WhyDoesItAlways · 13/06/2021 16:24

How did it go? Owner of a brand new car yet?
