Mums of boys - tights appeal

OK, ive had it up to here and beyond with replacing ds's socks. But am a slave to sex-stereotyped clothing. Has anyone found tights ('leggings', 'long-johns') in 'boy's' colours?

I know I should just put him in pink ones, or at least white ones, but can't bring myself to. would prefer stripy ones with not much pink, or red or green. Or blue i suppose.

Navy blue? Olive green? I probably have both...

KateandtheGirls · 29/10/2004 15:10

Leggings and long johns don't have feet attached, so it would have to be tights. I'm sure there must be tights in black and navy. How old is your son? Is he really going to accept wearing tights?

in h&m you can get navy tights with a macho thin white stripe.. quite nautical looking

but on a more basic level woolies has plain black/navy/gray/dark green tights

zippy539 · 29/10/2004 15:40

Laughed when I read this because (for same reason) I put ds in stripey blue tights when he was about 8 months old. I thought it was a brilliant idea cause the weather was freezing and he was lovely and cosy. Unfortunately DH just about had a heart attack at the sight of his boy in tights. It's the only thing he's ever really put his foot down about!

Policemen wear ladies tights under their uniforms (at least, the ones that I know do ), if it's good enough for them ...

beansmum · 29/10/2004 16:19

why do policemen wear tights?

WigWamBam · 29/10/2004 16:21

Keeps their legs warm on the beat in winter. I used to play in a TA band, and most of the bandsmen wore tights under their uniforms, too. Standing out in the snow for gawd knows how long, it makes sense

zebra · 29/10/2004 16:22

Builders wear them, too.

JoolsToo · 29/10/2004 16:26

but not little boys - surely? (especially pink ones )

WigWamBam · 29/10/2004 16:29

If it keeps his legs warm, why not? They don't have to be pink, and if they're under trousers, how will anyone know?

bonniej · 29/10/2004 16:30

my dh used to wear tights years ago when he worked on a building site. Never told any of the other builders but I bet they were all wearing them

honeybunny · 29/10/2004 16:39

Been there, done that with both my boys. Navy is a good colour choice for boys, goes with most things and in 100% cotton is far less "sweat inducing" than a disposable nappy. My 2 wore thm on really cold winter days up until potty training.

MissHoolie · 29/10/2004 16:41

I put tights on my baby last year. I already have some bought for him for this year when the weather gets really cold. Beats him pulling his socks off.

Doddle · 29/10/2004 16:41

my ds2 used to wear tights all the time, he has eczema on his legs and they used to stop him scratching. He had alsorts of coloured ones, and stripy red ones from Pure Cotton Comfort and Spirit of Nature.

He looked lovely in his tights!

LIZS · 29/10/2004 16:53

It is very normal for tots to wear tights - both boys and girls - under outdoor clothes in Switzerland. In fact now is about the time of year they start. At Mums and Tots you often find tight clad legs of both sexes running around !

Skate · 29/10/2004 16:54

OMG - I'd never thought of this - what a fab idea for babies!!!

ernest · 29/10/2004 17:07

it's the norm in colder euro countries for boys to wear tights. You can get them with cars, animals etc on. maybe you could do a search online & order them that way?

Doddle · 29/10/2004 17:13

I just thought of this german site www.jako-o.com, they have boys tights with cars, stars and stripes. They are called joggers, the tights are socks.

hope this helps

Arabica · 29/10/2004 17:31

My DS found a pair of my tights (horrible American tan 15-denier ones left over from pre-pregnancy days) yesterday and INSISTED on wearing them under his jeans. I just let him get on with it--he's only 3 and today he was clamouring to wear his rain trousers which I can't normally get him to put on for love nor money.

suedonim · 29/10/2004 18:02

My ds's wore tights under trousers when we lived in houses without CH. I got some cute cable ones in navy, red etc. M&S sell tights in 'boy' colours and some of their striped ones might be suitable, too.

This thread has reminded me I forgot to buy tights for myself today, bah!

alibubbles · 29/10/2004 19:09

My Ds now 17, wore smocked romper suits and tights, I used to put him in red, bottle green, navy and claret coloured ones. He used to look really cute in tartan viyella romper suits, great for crawling in too!

acnebride · 29/10/2004 20:24

Many, many thanks all, especially for the specific shops refs, esp jako-o, they were on another thread as well but i'd forgotten about them. DS is 9 months old. hooray, soon no more freezing cold calves, also not having to put his socks /shoes back on every hundred yards down the street!
