Sainsbury- almost 7 months out of date Apple Crumbles

Am I being unreasonable? Sainsbury’s online sold me Apple crumble which was almost 7 months out of date.

Said it’s quality over safety

Am I being unread to refuse £ 25.00 compensatory payment

Frozen apple crumble would be safe to eat a decade old. It wasn't the crumbles.

AriettyHomily · 27/08/2020 14:42

Oh come on op. Take the £25. You're not going to instantly start chucking up half way through the crumble and if you did it's likely related to something else.

Devlesko · 27/08/2020 14:46

When this happens you have to get the illness verified as food poisoning by hospital or gp. They can then say what caused it.
If it's the out of date crumble then you inform environmental services or a solicitor if you want to prosecute.

Simple mistake was adequately compensated. maybe check dates in future, like you'd look both ways crossing a one way street, just in case.

Zippy1510 · 27/08/2020 14:52

Wait did they sell you it 7 months past it’s best? I’d be annoyed. Even if the pie didn’t cause you food poisoning (and as a microbiologist saying bacteria can’t grow when it’s frozen is bollocks- there are psychrophillic bacteria that will grow fine just slowly). I still wouldn’t want to pay for something that wasn’t at at its prime quality.

Lisa78Lemon · 27/08/2020 14:52

Take a look into food poisoning and how it works. Depending on the pathogen involved, it takes anything from 24-72 hours to become ill. While you may have thrown up because the food didn't taste nice (which in itself isn't a nice experience, I'll give you that), this wouldn't be classed as food poisoning.

@g6zarkea6m652

There were 3 apple crumbles. We ate 2 and became sick. We retrieved the packages and noticed it was out date.

I believe Sainsbury has a legal duty to sell food which are in date.

Apple crumbles weren't out of date as it was a best before end date not an eat before date. The way you've added bits to this all the way through from retrieving the packages to stopping eating as soon as your friend vomited and your out of context quote (quality over safety) I'd take the £25 and run! It's a load of mush and smells a bit off!
g6zarkea6m652 · 27/08/2020 14:54

Thank you all for your great response.

The Apple crumbles were delivered via online service . I hope they were still frozen on receipt .

It was the first time my guest had that brand of Apple crumble. I thought he was lying when he said it did not taste right. I ate mine later and it was not immediately that we both stated to puke 🤮 . That was the only thing that we ate.

That was also the only thing that came up.

We check the packages and found them to be almost 7 months out of date. Received on the 11/6/20 best before date 20/11/19.

You're a chancer OP. You didn't notice they were out of date until you'd eaten them and then you were sick lol.

What a bunch of tosh. But go ahead, ask for more, see what they say

FinnyStory · 27/08/2020 14:59

You had a guest and only ate apple crumble? Was there alcohol involved by any chance? Grin

g6zarkea6m652 · 27/08/2020 15:02

I put them in the freezer on arrived. Took them out remove packages and placed in oven. No I never checked the date and saw no reason to🤭🤔. I purchased in good faith.!.

cariadlet · 27/08/2020 15:04

You really aren't taking these replies on board. It was a best before date rather than a use by date. They shouldn't have sold those crumbles with those dates but they wouldn't have made you sick. Be grateful for the goodwill gesture, take the money and move on.

MMN123 · 27/08/2020 15:05

They responded very well and you should be grateful for the £25

MMN123 · 27/08/2020 15:07

It’s not the food that made you puke. Either you psyched yourself into puking or something else caused it. Maybe you didn’t wash your hands.

ballsdeep · 27/08/2020 15:08

@g6zarkea6m652

Sick as in vomited🤮. We knew it was the pie because the apples were mushy and acidic.!
Why did you eat it then?! Sorryz they've offered £25. What more do you want
Devlesko · 27/08/2020 15:08

No I never checked the date and saw no reason to🤭🤔. I purchased in good faith.!.

Don't forget the road OP, no reason to check down that one way street, but one day someone could be coming the wrong way.

Have you learned a valuable lesson about checking dates? Well everything isn't lost and you're £25 better off.

I appreciate all the responses.

I am extremely OCD regarding cleanliness.

My GP confirmed she was not concerned about me and hand sanitizers and disinfectant wipe.

So you think it's acceptable to sell food 7 months out of date?

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 27/08/2020 15:14

My local one always has out of date stuff on the shelves and I regularly pointed this out, including stuff that was months out of date. They sent me stuff on a delivery that was out of date and I challenged it and they basically told me to bring it back and then said they'd refund the item. I ended up reporting them to the food standards people who took it seriously and presumably paid them a visit.

I was most annoyed at them implying that i was "at it" and just wanting compensation.

SoupDragon · 27/08/2020 15:15

That was the only thing that we ate.

You only had apple crumble? I like your style of feeding guests 😂

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/08/2020 15:16

I still shop there (as it's my closest big supermarket) but it takes ages as I have to check the dates rigorously and if I see something out of date now, I just don't bother telling them.

dementedpixie · 27/08/2020 15:16

No its not acceptable to sell food past its best before. £25 is adequate compensation for the crumbles though. What more are you expecting from them?

AriesTheRam · 27/08/2020 15:20

£25 could buy a lot of in date apple crumbles Smile

Teaorcake · 27/08/2020 15:21

As soon as person one started being sick I did not continue eating

I ate mine later and it was not immediately that we both stated to puke 🤮 . That was the only thing that we ate.

So the only thing you had eaten was this frozen apple pie (that for some reason you bought several of), your guest ate his first and you didn't eat it until later, by which time he had started vomitting. I would say £25 is great considering you are talking crap.

kursaalflyer · 27/08/2020 15:21

But what do you actually want?

VeggieSausageRoll · 27/08/2020 15:22

@g6zarkea6m652

Sick as in vomited🤮. We knew it was the pie because the apples were mushy and acidic.!
Why did you carry on eating enough to make you sick then?
