Am thinking of getting a new one, we've looked at a few places but no good so far we've tried......

land of leather (all sofas too big for our little living room)
scs (too expensive, im think £400 max for the lot!)
Argos (our last one came from there and hasn't lasted us, it looked knackered after 6mths and now its 3 yrs old!)
DFS - (we had one from there and the arm broke within a week)

Is it us or do thing just not last like they used to? My 1st sofa was £80 from a junk yard (for a 4seater settee and a his and hers chair - i loved it!! but dp made me get rid! It was a rare find!)

TIA

Well, we got our last one from Ikea, it was a self assemble flat pack one and has been fine and wasn't much, can't remember, might have to look. But we did decide it didn't need to last long and we wanted one that didn't matter if it got knackered (dd is 3) so we didn't see it as a long term investment.

WideWebWitch · 24/08/2007 17:39

But it's still perfectly comfortable.

southeastastra · 24/08/2007 17:39

we need a new one too, this one has only lasted 6 years and was £800 grr.

i had two from habitat that were about the same price and they died. so watch this thread with interest!

ikea seem to have lots to choose from

AttilaTheMum · 24/08/2007 17:39

Mine was SCS, but there was someone on recently who'd just got one from Argos they were very happy with - if you search for Argos & sofa within the last month you should find it (or try suite)

notsofarnow · 24/08/2007 17:44

Argos are doing lots of buy one get one free deals. I looked all round yesterday and they all seemed big in scs, land of leather etc.

Argos seem to do cheap to expensive so should be able to find something.

southeastastra · 24/08/2007 17:48

i quite fancy an ektorp

nutcracker · 24/08/2007 17:50

I had the Argos BOGOF ones about 3 years ago, brown leather 2 seater and 3 seater, and paid £500 i think, might have been £600. Either way they are fab.

Hurlyburly · 24/08/2007 17:51

I bought a pair of sofas from here 15 years ago (ahem) and they are still going strong:

www.kirkdale.co.uk/index.cfm?flash=1

I liked them so much so that I bought some more from them around 8 years ago. They're still going strong too!

scienceteacher · 24/08/2007 17:51

Our last one was DFS - can't remember the price ? £500. We've had it for over 2 years and it has taken a lot of abuse, and is still as good as new (apart from being a bit mucky).

Wheelybug · 24/08/2007 17:54

M&S - 2 about 7 years ago - they were about £7-800 each although we did order small ones for our then flat but we got sent large ones instead. All the paper work said small and it took us ages to realise what had happened - we thought we had just imagined them very wrong in our flat. Its been good as we have since moved twice and the smaller ones would have been too small once we moved.

They are basically still in very good condition - the only problem is they get filthy from dd and it shows up really badly because of the plain material so we desperately want to replace them but the only ones I like are leather ones at ££££££ and htink they may too end up getting ruined by dd.

mustrunmore · 24/08/2007 17:56

The Sofabed Shop. Its lasted and is great, but it was waaay tooo expensive.

My friend got Argos ones and they'd collapsed within 2 years

LoveMyGirls · 24/08/2007 18:19

www.sofasofa.co.uk/content.productdetail.728.html what do you think of this, bit more than i wanted to pay but its ideal, size, colour and material?

We used Furniture Village. Not sure if they are countrywide.
Have had ours for 5yrs and apart from me needed to wash the cover they are as good as new.

Polgara2 · 24/08/2007 18:52

Not sure I should admit to this but we bought ours from CS Lounge Suites (as they were then) about 12 years ago and they still look as good as new really. No fading or misshapen bits etc. Keep thinking about changing them but as they look so good am waiting til dc are past the bouncing/den building stage completely!

Millarkie · 24/08/2007 18:58

We have one from IKEA - bought 6 and a half years ago - still looks fine (is fabric but has washable covers). Has now been relegated to the playroom since we moved house and wanted 2 matching sofas. And mainly because the last one has worn so well we have just bought 2 more from IKEA, v. reasonable price and again, with washable covers. (bit of a nightmare to get though since we chose one which is 'pick up from store' and the style has just been discontinued so we had to rent a van and drive for an hour and a half to pick up the sofas and then drive through central London to another IKEA to pick up some covers (as the first IKEA had sofas but no sofa covers)..6 hour round trip in a white van

Bubble99 · 24/08/2007 18:59

We bought a Chesterfield last year. It cost a lot (£1000) but they last for years, even with children using them as a launchpad.

Heathcliffscathy · 24/08/2007 19:00

2 hand-made leather jobbies from a fab website, £1200 the pair. Still going strong 5 years on despite much hard wear and tear...
Agree things are not made to last...those effing DFS things are designed to fall apart just as the warranty wears off and your interest free payment thingy runs out.
