Am thinking of getting a new one, we've looked at a few places but no good so far we've tried......

land of leather (all sofas too big for our little living room)
scs (too expensive, im think £400 max for the lot!)
Argos (our last one came from there and hasn't lasted us, it looked knackered after 6mths and now its 3 yrs old!)
DFS - (we had one from there and the arm broke within a week)

Is it us or do thing just not last like they used to? My 1st sofa was £80 from a junk yard (for a 4seater settee and a his and hers chair - i loved it!! but dp made me get rid! It was a rare find!)

TIA

From a friend, secondhand. DTs (my wee weapons of mass destruction) have pounded it, pee and pooed on it (was that TMI?), drawn on it, poured water and various cereals on it, hidden toys in in, jumped on it, been sick on it, painted it and done pretty much all the things a pair of heat filled missiles can do. Paid £200. Next year I'm going to buy new ones!

charliecat · 24/08/2007 19:11

i have this and it looks shit now, 2 years later

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 24/08/2007 19:14

mine is blue is now 2years old and lasting better than the one before which was from courts.

LIZS · 24/08/2007 19:15

Ours were from m and s about 12 years ago , 2 sofas and a chair for around £1000 ! They look tired now (pattern is dated and covers worn) but underneath are fundamentally fine. Anyone had a sofa/chair successfully recovered for less than a new sofa costs ?

Saving isn't an option, we do try, we have a standing order but i end up going to getting it out because im overdrawn so we have just extended our bank loan which is very naughty but it meas we can pay off our od and credit card get my car mot'd and have some left to get a new sofa, the way im thinking is that the reason we are strugging so much now is because I've had a rough year with the business so far this year and our dd's are young so i cant earn as much money right now, we plan that dp will have a ay rise in the next 2 years so once we can earn more we will pay the debt off.

I think we're going to go for this which works out at £763
dd1 really wants a sofa that reclines but we went looking at sofas the other day and she cuther finger on 1 plus we dont really have the space and can't buy it for what we can afford unless we buy these but they are too big for the living room really - they would just fit but there wouldnt be any room for toys and as I am a childminder thats a no go!

Hi
We have a two and three seater from the Erktop range at Ikea, have just worked out that they are 7 yrs old and still going strong. i have a couple of covers in different colours so wash and change as i feel like it.

great for kids to jump on or so mine say!!!

SecondhandRose · 25/08/2007 08:45

I have a 'Maxi' on order from DFS but a friend of mine has just had new DFS sofas delivered and they are not the same as in the shop - poorer quality leather and shabbily built.

DFS are now importing from China, says it all really. I hope I'm not too disappointed when ours arrives.

Pixiefish · 25/08/2007 08:46

DFS- £1600. Was on half price- I got a 3 seater and a 1 seater. Got it about 7 years ago and it's still like new. It's dark leather though so is really easy to clean

Jojay · 25/08/2007 09:21

Weve got 2 Hamilton sofas from Next, and we LOVE them!!

They are SO comfy - DH and I fall asleep in front of the telly on them practically every night.

I think they were about £600 each. We've had them for about 18 months and they still look brand new.

RubySlippers · 25/08/2007 09:32

joysleep
2 cream leather sofas and footstool
£700 the lot (in the sale)
fantastic quality - had them 2 years

Spagblog · 25/08/2007 09:34

Land of Leather four years ago £3500
A terrible waste of money really. Saw a gorgeous corner sofa in John Lewis for £1500 but it is too big for our room.

twentypence · 25/08/2007 09:54

One of those Welsh mail order ones - over 10 years old and still going strong and have no plans to change it. Seem to remember that including a double foot stool and a couple of leather cushions it was about 800.

NadineBaggott · 25/08/2007 10:01

Ours are by Duresta and they're not cheap but then we don't have kids so can afford to treat ourselves! They're very comfortable.

MrsBadger · 25/08/2007 10:29

three-seater leather chesterfield thus
was less than the £519 quoted but was several years ago
wearing very well

fawkeoff · 25/08/2007 10:33

have u looked on ebay????

JackieNo · 25/08/2007 10:47

We have the Lervik sofa and recliner. Not v old, so no idea how well they'll wear. Previous ones were from DFS, and looked shabby as soon as they'd been delivered - we were fed up with them before we'd even started to pay for them.

harleyd · 25/08/2007 10:51

dfs 3 years ago. it cost £2200 its black leather 3 seater, 2 seater and armchair and i still love it

j20baby · 25/08/2007 10:57

i got this one about 2 months ago, seems ok up to now
here

have you tried freecycle or local charity shop? you can get some quite decent ones

preggersagain · 25/08/2007 11:02

dfs- couple of months ago, 4 seater, two armchairs and storage footstool totalled about £2700, paying over 3 years.

Lovely sofa and quick delivery, and the bonus is that you can order spare covers at a reaonable price if they are dfs fabric range- se we have one for best and one for everyday wear and tear!

pirategirl · 25/08/2007 11:04

bench 3 seat sofa from ikea ten yrs ago, has been amazing. still sturdy, altho worn a fiar bit, but i am impressed. was £399

preggersagain · 25/08/2007 11:07

forgot to say- we moved a few years ago (2 tobe precise) into a new built development, we bought sofas (bogof-argos) as did some of our new neighbours, out of the three families no-one still has them, they fell apart immediatly, looked shabby and your arse ended up on the floor after about 6 months! They were the £500 ones- never again, i learnt my lesson on that one!!!

notsofarnow · 25/08/2007 11:20

my friend has argos ones the bogof ones she has had them about 4 yrs now and they still look ok her dc would have been 4 and 6 so I guess if your average weight and don't abuse them then maybe they'll be ok but I don't know I'm confused because if you look at this thread several people have had sofas from same places some have lasted, some have fallen apart.

Think i'll stick with my two M&S ones that were given to us even though I want leather and something a bit smaller.
