It says everywhere that they are supposed to last til 4 years but he is nearly out of the weight limit and is also nearly too tall. at only 22 months

What is the safest option if I have to move him to the stage 2 early?

are you sure?

look at teh britax evolva 123. You can use it with an integral harness and then up to 11 but it will probably give you a good long while with the integral harness which is the safest bet

Dragonhart · 26/05/2007 22:50

The weight limit on the 5 point harnesses for most I can find is 40lbs. Then you have to swop to using the seat belt with them.

I think that is right?

I can't imagine how he can be too big at 22 months.

You know they are too big when their eye level is above the top of the seat?

My tallish DS was OK at 3.5.

misdee · 26/05/2007 22:53

ceolos, it does happen. dd2 was out of hers at 2. she was the same size and weight as dd1 who is 2.5yrs older.

PrincessPeaHead · 26/05/2007 22:54

you have a 40lb 22 month old?

my 3.8 yr old is only 35lbs lol

Dragonhart · 26/05/2007 22:54

We have the bebe confort Iseos TT and the top of his ears are level with the tp of the seat. Asked at Mothercare and they said that when his eyes are level with the top, we have to move him so that his neck doesnt get damaged if we had a crash.

He is a big boy.

my ds1 was out of his very early too, go to one of the big stores that do car seats and ask their advice, try him in a few seats and see which he fits best

Ceolas · 26/05/2007 22:55

wow, what does she have now?

Dragonhart · 26/05/2007 22:55

My dd2 is tiny though. She is only on the 9th centile (sometimes below) when ds has always been 98+!

I really don't think a seat belt will ever be safe with a 22 month old. It is all about the weight of the head. The younger you are the higher the proportion of body weight is in the head, and the more likely you are to get whiplash/serious neck injury. the three point harness keeps the body very close to the seat and helps this. I would really phone britax and ask them what they suggest

PrincessPeaHead · 26/05/2007 22:58

well look at the evolva. it is meant to be safe for up to 11 year olds so the height thing wont be an issue

I'm not sure about 40lbs on the harness but I imaging it is safer to have him in the three point harness than the carseat belt

misdee · 26/05/2007 22:58

pph dd2 was over 30lb a year old.

no idea what she weighs now, was still off the charts for both height and weight when last checked,

she is now 4.5 and in a jane indy.

Ceolas · 26/05/2007 22:58

the evolve still has a harness, doesn't it?

morocco · 26/05/2007 22:58

you could also try your local council and see if they have a road safety unit who can advise (I'd trust them more than halfords personally!) - ours has all different types of car seats and you can try them out to see how they fit for your car etc
a 40lb not yet 2 year old sounds impressive btw

Dragonhart · 26/05/2007 22:59

Everyone (shops/maufacturers) I have asked say it is not ideal but if he is the size of a 3.5-4 year old then he should be ok. Not exactly reasuring is it!!

OP posts:
misdee · 26/05/2007 22:59

they used to do an 'elite' which you could use a harness till they are 6. no idea if its still available,

Dragonhart · 26/05/2007 23:00

It is not so impressive when you have a 17 1/2 month gap between dc!! My back is knackered!

Dragonhart · 26/05/2007 23:02

this one misdee?

OP posts:
CarGirl · 26/05/2007 23:02

The elvolva 123 seems to have replaced the elite tbh.

Dragonhart · 26/05/2007 23:03

Yes, it goes to 55lbs so would last longer. Will have a look at one.

OP posts:
misdee · 26/05/2007 23:03

yes thats it.

harness can be used til lage 6.

no idea on how safe the seat is though.

CarGirl · 26/05/2007 23:03

yes dragon I had one with dd1 who is now 10, they are good and very similar to the evolva 123

Dragonhart · 26/05/2007 23:04

Evolva 123 harness can only be used to 15kg I think.

OP posts:
Dragonhart · 26/05/2007 23:05

I would rather have a 123 seat though as it will last longer and save money.

OP posts:
Ceolas · 26/05/2007 23:05

Which? reckons evolva is OK. Harness up to 18kg apparently.
