new estate car advice- bigger boot needed

Just returned from our first family holiday with ds (5 months) and realised avensis boot is too small. Need a car with a bigger boot - thought estate would be good. DH not ready to drive a people mover!

Mercedes E class - you can fit the population of a small nation in the boot.

LadyClaret · 19/04/2007 15:14

Thanks for that- will send a picture to the reluctant DH!

We used to have a Peugeot 406 estate - that had a boot the size of Wales. (Has been replaced by the 407 though, I don't know if that's the same)

bozza · 19/04/2007 15:16

Your DS will never again need so much stuff as he did for this holiday. Although there may be the issue of subsequent children.

We have a roof box for holidays rather than get a specific car for two weeks of the year. Although this year we are flying so will have to cope with fitting it all in suitcases but the DC will be 6 and 3 so no equipment needed.

WendyWeber · 19/04/2007 15:16

Here - we had the 2 little seats as well.

WendyWeber · 19/04/2007 15:19

A saloon with a big boot is the VW Passat - a local taxi that took us to the airport once was a Passat and I was v impressed with both the boot space and the internal space (esp the back)

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/04/2007 15:20

A6 Avant - wonderful car. Only just traded ours in.

Whizzz · 19/04/2007 15:21

We have an Avensis Estate ! Great boot with lots of hidden hidey holes !

MuffinMclay · 19/04/2007 16:34

Luggage expands to fill the space available. We have the Audi A6 Avant and still managed to fill it when we went on holiday.
Great car though.

Dh has a Peugeot 407 and imo the boot is larger than the Audi A6 it replaced.

It's huuuge.

BigGitDad · 19/04/2007 21:03

I have a diesel Passet estate and it is excellent, plenty of room, a good engine and economical as well.

lucykate · 19/04/2007 21:05

another vote for mercedes e class. we've had one for 5 years, just done a week trip to cornwall in it, family of 4. boot is huge plus decent leg room too.

unfortunatley, whilst on holiday, some idiot crashed into the back of us and the car is a right off

will be replacing it with the same, but the newer body shape than our original k reg one, and maybe diesel. they are good cars, ours had done 270k miles!

WendyWeber · 19/04/2007 21:06

When we got the 406 (51 reg) the other option was an A6 Avant, because they both offer the 2 foldaway seats in the boot.

As it turned out we couldn't get the A6 because it was being revamped and there weren't any at the right time but in any case the 406 did have the bigger luggage space (according to the spec as given in litres anyway although I'm never sure how useful that is )

We love our Ford Mondeo estate 05.

jamiesamfreddie · 19/04/2007 21:45

If you want a really big boot, get a Volvo estate, they swallow luggage and come back laughing for more! I keep ds3's silver cross in there all the time now, and can still fit the weekly shop in too. And they are so easy to park, in spite of the size. Said to have a heavy clutch, though I don't notice. And fuel economy is scarily poor, but we bought a really cheap one and they last forever. No rust either (handy if you have a little scrape)

LadyClaret · 19/04/2007 22:26

Thanks for all the advice. This is one topic related to babies that DH appears to be more interested in. personally I enjoy any excuse to shop- shame i no longer have the wage to accommodate it!

BigGitDad · 19/04/2007 22:45

Volvos do not have good leg room in the back. I wanted one but that fault put me off.

jamiesamfreddie · 19/04/2007 22:49

How can you say Volvo's have a fault I LOVE mine, she's perfect

GameGirly · 19/04/2007 22:51

Best car ever, my Volvo XC90. Loads of leg room and a boot bigger than my house - until DH wrote it off, that is. Not so great if you're a tree-hugger, though. We've replaced with with something a little greener.

BigGitDad · 20/04/2007 09:45

I am talking about the V70 estate. If you are 6ft the rear seat leg room is small. My sister has a V70 and she swears by it as well.
I love the XC90 and if I had the money I would love to have one, but I thought we were talking estates here.

MuffinMclay · 20/04/2007 09:56

I agree about the Volvo V70 estate. We looked at getting one when we got the Audi and I found it cramped in the back despite being rather short. Huge boot though....

bewilderbeast · 20/04/2007 10:10

skoda fabia estate, massive boot great car, so long as you're not a car snob

Enid · 20/04/2007 10:12

bmw 5 series has a huge boot

peugeot 807 (? 8 smothing its the estate version) has the biggest boot I have ever seen and fits about 17 people inthe car part

DrDaddy · 20/04/2007 10:15

We have 2 estates - Merc E Class which is massive and a Volvo (classic 240 Torslanda). Not sure about V70 in the back, but the Merc and older Volvo are both fine for me (I'm 6ft 2in)
