Bored of contents of make-up bag - any suggestions

Just looking through my make-up bag this morning and decided that I have gone off some of the things in it really. Usually use Clinique but have recently bought a few No7 things and decided that they suit my skin better now I am getting older . I am 30 on Sunday and have decided I need making over pronto. What brands are good these days, as it has been ages since I have really been to a make-up counter and bought something as I usually rely on people to buy me things as birthday/christmas presents. Suggestions would therefore be very grateful.

Why don't you pay a visit to Sephora if you have one near you. They are really good becuase there are no snooty counter assistents, all the make up is out on shelves with applicators, cotton wool etc so you can play with the make up. They do all the trad brands but also do some of the funkier ones like Stilla, Benefit etc.

Go on treat yourself!

I really like the Benefit stuff, even though it's a bit pricey. Definitely adds a touch of glamour to the make-up bag!

jampot · 06/07/2004 13:23

well I always find Christian Dior pretty nice for "uplifting" make up. Actually I'm going to start a "make up swap" thread - the idea's not as bad as it sounds!

boudicca · 06/07/2004 13:24

there are sites where you can try out make-up/hairstyles in VR by scanning a pic of yourself onto site, also if you buy from QVC you can try out makeup etc and send it back if you don't like it no questions asked so it would only cost p&p

jampot · 06/07/2004 13:24

Sooz - have you tried Lip Plump by Benefit - its excellent for skinny lips!
Not that I'm saying you have skinny lips!!

oliveoil · 06/07/2004 13:31

Have a look if there are any offers on at the mo, I think Dior have an offer on if you buy 2 things you get a goodie bag etc.

Givenchy have a mini range out at the moment which look good.

Agree on Benefit stuff.

Best blusher I have found is a really cheap one by Bourgouis (sp??), a pinky one which makes you look like you have had sleep when you haven't.

ooh, no, I haven't jampot. I've suddenly got the urge to browse the Debenhams make-up counters this lunchtime...

boudicca · 06/07/2004 13:34

I was in Debs yesterday and there are girls offering makeovers from a brand called Helene

spacemonkey · 06/07/2004 13:48

ooh yes i love benefit ... my local debenhams has a benefit stand and they do free makeovers

beware - your bank account will be empty by the end of it though

littlerach · 06/07/2004 13:50

Benefit Hi Beam is brilliant, also their bubble bath. Didn't think much of theirlip balm though.

spacemonkey · 06/07/2004 13:54

Benefit doctor feelgood is fantastic too - it's a little pot of something or other that eliminates oily shiny patches ... and yet it's not a powder, more like a cocoa butter wax

also i can vouch for Bad Gal Lash

hana · 06/07/2004 13:56

love the Lancome Juicy Lips lip glosses

ghengis · 06/07/2004 13:59

I think you can't beat Clarins for skincare , love Bourjois blusher and lipsticks and Givenchy for meteorite balls (!) and eye colours. Max Factor 2000 calorie mascara or Maybelline. Mac are young and funky and do great lipsticks.

pepsi · 06/07/2004 14:21

Im using some Lancome moisturiser at the moment nice. On the make up front I think you cant go wrong with the Collection 2000 lipsticks you get in most supermarkets, they are dead cheap and just as good as the top brands. Touche Eclat, Yves St Laurent I think, is good for hiding dark circles under your eyes and the best eye make up remover ever has to be No 7's Dual Action. Most make up artists you a mixture of top quality and cheaper brands. I would spend the money on a good foundation and brushes and then buy the make up from Boots No 7 or something. Avoid Collection 2000 eye shadows as the last two I have had have cracked and made a right old mess in my make up bag. Boots No 7 are good as they do the three for twos.

spacemonkey · 06/07/2004 14:23

clinique foundation is fabulous

it's about £17 for a small bottle but it lasts for ages and i agree it's worth spending more on good skincare and foundation and use cheaper brands for lippy etc

hana · 06/07/2004 14:25

MAC also do a great powder blusher

bundle · 06/07/2004 14:31

hana, maybelline do a cheaper and imo just as good version of the lipgosses..i have it in 2 colours

jampot · 06/07/2004 14:32

CD Ultimeyes mascara is excellent!!

oliveoil · 06/07/2004 14:34

do you not find those Lancome juicy tubes a bit sticky? My hair ends up all over my lips in the wind

bundle · 06/07/2004 14:40

v attractive olive..

codswallop · 06/07/2004 14:40

ditto to pink blusher olive
I had a mac one ( need abother but dont live near) called dada delight that did just that

codswallop · 06/07/2004 14:41

Olive you need a hat o stop the" hair in lip gloss " issue
I have a baseball cap for windy days

spacemonkey · 06/07/2004 15:03

i always find having a skinhead an effective and inexpensive solution to that issue olive

bundle · 06/07/2004 15:07

but remember ladies, you can't have a hat and a hairstyle...

codswallop · 06/07/2004 15:07

hehe
