DH just told me MIL has bought DD (2.2) a hobby horse for xmas and I just thought 'what the hell is she going to do with that?'.
I'm really annoyed as I feel she never puts any effort into anything she buys for her (which isn't often anyway).
Anyone disagree and think hobby horses are great?

id be really happy for my lo to receive hobby horse.better than alot of plastic crap you can buy .

WigWamBahhumbug · 14/12/2006 10:22

I think a hobby-horse is a lovely present for a two year old - my dd adored hers, she still plays with it now at 5.

PinkTinsel · 14/12/2006 10:22

i love them! i'd hve gotton so much use from one as a kid!

much better than plastic crap that makes irritating noises.

think it's a very well thought out present

corrina28 · 14/12/2006 10:23

i would be quite happy with a hobby horse as well but i dont think either of my boys would like it tho.

TinsellyRhino · 14/12/2006 10:23

you mean a horse head on a stick???
dd1 had one of them and loved it to death, it was a unicorn one that made a noise when you pinched it's ear but it was the pretending to be on a horse that was the thing. She played with it just as much once batteries had gone

I think she was 3 when she got it though

WHEELYbahhumBUG · 14/12/2006 10:23

yep another vote here for hobby horses - in fact may put it on dd's birthday list...

HumphreyCushiONtheFirstNoel · 14/12/2006 10:24

My problem is that I am riled by pretty much anything my MIL says, does or implies, but......
I used to love my hobby horse!
It's quite an old-fashioned present, but I quite like that - I also like toys that encourage imagination.
Word of warning - move any valuables from hobby horse height!

MyTwoChocolateCoinsWorth · 14/12/2006 10:24

nice pressie for a tot i think! good for imaginative play. my kids had one when they were younger. of course, my kids, being my kids, used it to bash things, but i hear other children like to pretend they are on a horse!

Avalon · 14/12/2006 10:25

Great present.

dara · 14/12/2006 10:25

What on earth is wrong with a hobby horse? My daughter loved hers.

smellymelly · 14/12/2006 10:25

Yeah sounds ok to me too, sorry! We all have to bite our tongue sometimes and just be grateful when it comes to the in laws, I have to as well. In the past I used to think I had the right to choose what they got, but see now that is totally unfair, they love buying presents for all 4 grandkids, which isn't cheap, so I only ask know to know in advance what it is as we doubled up one year and I was not happy!!!

nailpolish · 14/12/2006 10:25

my dd has a hobby horse from woolies that neighs etc

its is definitely one of her top 3 toys

fridascruffs · 14/12/2006 10:26

I love the hoby horse idea! I know what to get DD next year now...

moonshine · 14/12/2006 10:27

My now 5 year-old dd got one when she was 3 and she still charges around the house on it, followed by a screaming ds, 2, wanting a go. A well-loved toy here!

Debbiethemum · 14/12/2006 10:27

I think I am offended now - as that is what we are getting DD as her present.

This has been prompted by her fixation with horses and any stick she finds she tries to ride as if it were a hobby horse - looks very odd if it is a small pen

MamaG · 14/12/2006 10:28

Yep, another hobby-horse-house here

DS aged 2 loves it.

MamaG · 14/12/2006 10:28

ROFL at debbiethemum

weepootleflump · 14/12/2006 10:29

I'm shocked! TBH I probably wouldn't have been happy with anything she bought - she just winds me up so much .

nailpolish · 14/12/2006 10:29

rofl @ "small pen" debbiethemum!

Debbiethemum · 14/12/2006 10:31

There is no 'is' at the end of 'small pen' - you lot have filthy minds

tortoiseBells · 14/12/2006 10:32

love hobby horses!

nailpolish · 14/12/2006 10:32

er, i wasnt thinking that at all debbie

just laughing at the thought of your little dd having such a great imagination that she can turn a pen into a horse

PeachyIsNowAChristmasFruit · 14/12/2006 10:32

Hobby Horses are fab

Lets swap MIL's mine has binned my ds's coz we can't make it to collect when she demands (prior commitments)

HumphreyCushiONtheFirstNoel · 14/12/2006 10:33

weepootleflump, you're like me!
If it came from my MIL, it wouldn't matter if it were a horse on a stick, or the moon on the stick - I'd still be disgruntled!

MamaG · 14/12/2006 10:33

Debbie, I wasn't thinking that either!! My DS regularly trots around the room, clicking his tongue, with a small pen between his legs. Or a ruler. Or a tin of deoderant and your phrase made me laugh

I think YOU have the filthy mind young lady
