DH just told me MIL has bought DD (2.2) a hobby horse for xmas and I just thought 'what the hell is she going to do with that?'.
I'm really annoyed as I feel she never puts any effort into anything she buys for her (which isn't often anyway).
Anyone disagree and think hobby horses are great?

OK - I am sorry, put it down to working for 20 years with mostly male colleagues, they kept on picking up on staff I said in all innocence

ProfYaffle · 14/12/2006 10:38

we bought our neice a hobby horse last Xmas and have asked mil to buy one for our 2yo dd this year as dd is currently galloping around the house on sticks shouting 'clip clop! clip clop!'

Lovely prezzie imho (hope bil thought so!)

I'd swap her for anyone Peachy but they sound very similar anyway

That is me exactly, HumphreyCushiONtheFirstNoel. But every time I say 'right I'm going to stop this and give her a chance' she immediately does something even worse than ever before - she is just unbearable. Luckily we won't be spending xmas with her anyway.

I'm MIL-free this Christmas too!

HoHoHorsewoman · 14/12/2006 10:43

DD2 now plays with the Hobby Horse DD1 had when she was little and they have both loved it (but then we are a horsy family, and anything equine is always very welcome!) I think your problem stems more from the fact that your MIL has bought something you feel is not appropriate for your child, and I can quite sympathise with that sentiment. My DD's presents from MIL are always either pyjamas, a book of Irish Legends (lost count of how many we have) or something along the theme of 'angels' (WTF emoticon). I don't know if she forgets what she bought them last year, or if she just picks up the first thing she sees in any of these categories. Although one year, when DD1 was eight, she bought her a bra and knickers set....DH was not impressed

ProfYaffle · 14/12/2006 10:48

I have the opposite problem where the IL's frequently disapprove of presents we have bought then and ring up to complain after Xmas. This year we have spent £200 on a champagne balloon flight for the pil, I have warned dh if one word of complaint is uttered there will be fisticuffs.

nogoeswithbellson · 14/12/2006 10:49

I think it is lovely. You do sound very ungrateful.

weepootleflump · 14/12/2006 10:57

Yes nogoes, I am definitely ungrateful but I've already said that myself and believe me I have plenty of reason not to like her.
I was booked in to be induced with ds who I knew was not going to survive and dh asked her to come and look after dd while we were at hospital, she said she'd find it too upsetting so instead took herself off on a cruise for a month

Mine have enjoyed the Woolworth's hobby horse which neighs too.

DS has a hobby-rudolph. It plays Santa Claus is coming to town and flashes. So be thankful. My Mum bought it - so of course I tolerate it and DH disapproves of it.

WHEELYbahhumBUG · 14/12/2006 11:10

I think this is a case of MIL's never being right. Mine always asks what dd wants and then you have to tell her exactly which one (eg. this yr dd is haivng an easel but that wasn't enough info, she had to be sent a link to the elc one). Of course, to me THAT isn't right and I'd like her to show her some initiative in the buying process.

Of course, if she did she'd buy the wrong thing. I think as a MIL you're damned if you do and damned if you don't !!
