it is soooo fantastic.

has 25 doors behind which lie little wooden thingies (of a christmas nature) that ds will be able to hang on the little hooks around the big father Christmas in the middle.

it is so lovely.

am v v pleased with it, and there were a few left ladies....

i'll never need to buy an advent calendar again...huzzah!

Oh it sounds lovely - am very envious (see my not impressed with Playmobil advent calendar thread).

jampots · 30/11/2006 23:21

what? no chocolate flavoured treats??????

sounds lovely

marthamoo · 30/11/2006 23:21

Advent calendars (way back in the dark ages when they just had pictures under the doors) always used to have 25 doors...when did they stingily knock it back to 24?

FestivelyFrostyFloss · 30/11/2006 23:22

I'm off to make a last minutr purchase tomorrow. Typing this the thought does occur that I could wait a few more days to see if they are reduced... Would rather not have a choccie one though so not sure they get reduced/last long enough. Yours sounds lovely. DS would try to eat them though!

Heathcliffscathy · 30/11/2006 23:24

oh oh .

mm

it has 24.

sorry only 24 doors

[i have fallen off wagon so badly and am in need of motivational pep talking/kicking up arse].

need to get a grip and get back on track so that xmas doesn't take me back to square less than one.

i do love this advent calendar. it is fantastic, i think ds is going to really love it.

am going to make advent wreath this weekend....

oooooo am all christmassy

got ds to choose a bauble too. and i chose one.

sorry that bit in the middle was a rant about my weight btw....

They used to have 25 though, didn't they? Someone tell me they did and it's not just a "curly wurlys were as long as your arm and wagon wheels were the size of..well..wagon wheels" nostalgia thing.

Oh soph - it's soooo hard at Christmas because everywhere is food of a delicious and fattening nature and it's all meals out and have a drink and oh go on have another mince pie. I'm trying to stay on the straight and narrow but I went to a PTA buffet on Tueday and I was like a starving woman - my paper plate was buckling under the strain.

gingernut · 30/11/2006 23:29

??? In my day (way back when), advent calendars had 24 windows only. After all on the 25th you will have some other treats to look forward to (hopefully). Advent does end on 24th December (doesn't it?).

OldieMum · 30/11/2006 23:30

Pedantic moment - they certainly had only 24 doors when I was a child in the 60s. Advent finishes on Christmas Eve, after all.

OldieMum · 30/11/2006 23:31

snap, gingernut!

marthamoo · 30/11/2006 23:31

I'm sure I remember opening a door on Christmas morning...maybe I was just really bad at counting.

marthamoo · 30/11/2006 23:32

Ooh yes, on the 25th you got your satsuma and bag of walnuts

OldieMum · 30/11/2006 23:32

Walnuts? How posh! We just had a tub of lard.

Heathcliffscathy · 30/11/2006 23:35

pmsl at your buckling paper plate

i've got a gut hanging over my trews atm.

marthamoo · 30/11/2006 23:36

Get some magic pants - or just give in and buy a tub o' lard

gingernut · 30/11/2006 23:38

LOL OldieMum.

I love advent calendars, but they have to be of the non-choc. variety for me (usually much nicer pictures). When I was a child I used to open all the doors on mine at the beginning of December. Then I would shut them again. I thought at the time that Mum didn't know (ha ha, I bet she did - I'll have to ask her).

We have 5 this year (Mum has bought a choc one each for the dses, I have anordinary picutre one, we have a Thomas one from the last magazine and we have a fabric one with little pockets which comes out every year).

OldieMum · 30/11/2006 23:38

A (very kind) cousin of mine sent a (hideous) Cadbury's chocolate calendar to DD (3.11). In previous years, she had taken delight in opening doors to find see the pictures and we had hoped she would have one more Christmas in ignorance of the existence of chocolate calendars. Good atheists that we are, advent calendars are about advent, for goodness sake, not chocolate etc etc. After protracted negotiation, she has agreed to extract all the chocolate from said calendar tomorrow morning, put it in a bowl, eat it when she feels like it and open the doors on the (much nicer) traditional calendar she chose herself each day. I'm not sure why we felt so strongly about the chocolate calendar, but it touched a raw nerve.

gingernut · 30/11/2006 23:41

The chocolate in them is usually horrible anyway IMO.

pinkranger · 30/11/2006 23:43

where is peter jones , i am looking for one! Have agreed to choc this year but dont want one next!

OldieMum · 30/11/2006 23:43

And there's also the Cadbury's salmonella angle. Have they sorted that out yet? My mother brought me a box of Cadbury's Roses when I was in hospital having DS last July. Does she want to kill her progeny, or what? I chucked them in the bin discreetly.

OldieMum · 30/11/2006 23:44

Peter Jones is in Sloane Square.

Skribble · 30/11/2006 23:46

I got a nice wooden tree like this in Lidls last year.

UnquietDad · 01/12/2006 00:27

I hope it said "drawers" on the box, not "draws" like on the John Lewis one.

Strangely enough I was rather bored with my name (noone of you would have recognised mw as it was instantly forgettable) so I changed it to this yesterday. It is my favourite shop and jy spiritual home. Will be off there this afternoon to try to get one of said Advent Calenders which sound fab.
