Should I get DH an Apple Ipod Shuffle or a better cheaper make?

I was thinking of getting DH an Apple Ipod Shuffle for Christmas, which is Apple's most basic Ipod. But when I was researching them I saw lots of cheaper models with much more memory and better features. Is it worth paying for the Apple make or go with a cheaper model? I am new to all this MP3 stuff, it's all very confusing.

Thanks

go for the cheaper and better option.

fullmoonfiend · 16/11/2006 18:29

I reckon from what dh and his geeky friends say that Apple Ipod is only for people who care about 'labels'. If dh cares about music, go for something else, you get more for your money and the apples are notoriously 'fragile'.

TheHighwayCod · 16/11/2006 18:29

get a vudeo one
they are fab

Whizzz · 16/11/2006 18:34

Creative Zen is fabby

dreamchocolate · 16/11/2006 18:38

So maybe Apple is just about the label, I thought so. DH doesn't care about that, I'll keep researching the others. Thanks!

I'd get an iPod because they are funky & I've used mac computers & have been very impressed with them, but I would have thought that other MP3s would probably do the same job so it is really down to what you want it to do & how much you're willing to pay for it.

I'd possibly also look at phones with built in music players as it's be one less thing to carry about.

fullmoonfiend · 16/11/2006 18:51

echo Whizzz - I love my Creative Zen.

DP went thrui every single MP3 player and read a gazillion reviews. He opted for ipod video but his other choice was called iriver or something like that. DON'T get a shuffle, its just a 'poor mans ipod' apparently.

Its not just about labels tho, our mac using friend loves his ipod and he could have got any other he wanted. A mobile with an mp3 player is another idea ie sony ericsson w300i.

DP got an ipod video one in the end but only because we won a comptetion for it and a nano!

fmf, I dropped my Ipod Mini in the bath recently (there is a panicky thread here somewhere) and it survived beautifully. I'm very happy with the robustness of the Ipod Mini. I've had mine for a couple of years, dropped it more times than I care to mention on hard floors (inc concrete paving slabs) and tried to drown it but still it lives ! The Ipod Mini is v easy to use too.

Creative are meant to be a v good make too.

NomDePlume · 16/11/2006 18:56

mildmanneredjanitor - matsui are Curry's own make. Kinda like buying Tesco Choco-Pops rather than Kelloggs Coco-pops....

I got my Zen last crimbo and sadly, it froze in Jan. Dh was mortified, but he emailed them and they paid for him to send it back, replaced it with no quibbles and sent it back within 2 days. I have had no problems at all with the new one and use it every day. Suspect dh is buying docking station speakery things this year (he really ought to learn to cover his internet tracks better LOL

TinkersBollocks · 16/11/2006 19:01

I got a Zen for my birthday...still not quite got to grips with it but...looks nice!

Whizzz · 16/11/2006 19:03

I also spilt Budweiser on my Creative Zen & it still works ....OOPs

lorina · 16/11/2006 19:03

Dont get a shuffle it would be very annoying not to be able to pick your track I think.

Dh has the full on ipod and loves it.

DD had an ipod mini 2 years ago and it lasted abot 10 months.

Got her an ipod nano last xmas and it lasted about 8 months.

Battery died on both occasions.

For a heavy user they dont cut the mustard.

hulababy · 16/11/2006 19:07

I have an iPod Nano and like it. Think it does look really nice, and it is easy to work/download, etc. However I wouldn't get the Shuffle as I think it would be really limiting to not have the features of choosing tracks, etc.

chenin · 16/11/2006 19:07

iRiver is a brilliant make... battery life is fantastic and they often come recommended. they were one of the mp3 players marked as a best buy in Which? magazine.
(and we have 3 in this family with no probs)!

Right, had a scoot around on the net and have decided on the Creative Zen, which I'd never heard of an hour ago, but it comes highly recommende here and on other reviews. Thank God for Mumsnet! Now, do go get Black or White? Silver is a tenner more so he's not having that!

black, u can't see the dirt

chenin · 16/11/2006 19:19

i paid £59 for a 1gb iRiver (it was on a special offer at the time). I would highly recommend a website called advancedmp3players.co.uk (sorry, i can't seem to do links!)
But if you type it in like that, it should come up. They sell just mp3 players and they are so helpful if you want to ring them for advice. I think my model is a T20 and my two DDs have got 512mb ones. Theirs take an AA battery and it lasts about 19 hrs. Mine is rechargeable built in battery and seems to last forever!
