Should I get DH an Apple Ipod Shuffle or a better cheaper make?

I was thinking of getting DH an Apple Ipod Shuffle for Christmas, which is Apple's most basic Ipod. But when I was researching them I saw lots of cheaper models with much more memory and better features. Is it worth paying for the Apple make or go with a cheaper model? I am new to all this MP3 stuff, it's all very confusing.

sorry for a thickie-question hijack here - but if i buy a non-iPod mp3 player can I still download the songs I've got on iTunes on my pc? If not, do I have to switch to napster or something and start downloading all over again?

i tunes is only compatatiblew with ipods as far as i know. there has been something in the news recebtly about someone finally breaking the code so that itunes can be used in any mp3 player
