2004 or 2005 Mountain Buggy urban?

accessorizequeen · 29/07/2006 15:06

Nearly convinced myself to swap mugaboo for mb urban but will have to buy 2nd hand to justify doing this as mb will be 5th pushchair I have purchased!
Any advice on whether to get newer version or if 2004 version will be ok? Are changes to 2005 worth hanging out for as turn up less on ebay? Neither dp or I tall, so extendable handlebar is not an issue (although I do quite like them). We have sheepskin for extra padding & buggysnuggle as well. DS1 2.7 and DS2 due in December. Did read about 2005 model being less suitable for off-roading, has anyone found that to be true as I want to take it round local woods & so forth although not up mountains thus not considering the terrain.
There is 2004 model on ebay now which is bargain with carrycot, whereas 2005 models seem to go for more. Help!

Go for the 2004 if the price is better. The only difference is the fabric of the seat unit really.

The 2005 has more padding but the fabric is synthetic/nylon type thing and the 2004 is like a really thick cotton canvas. As you already have a sheepskin and buggysnuggle the lack of padding really is not a problem.

Can't really comment on the off road performance thing. I sell them but can't say there was much of a difference between the two models apart from the fabrics and adjustable handle. Deffo get a carrycot though. Good Luck!

AQ - you're back!! Hoping you are over the 1st trimester nasties (I'm in the thick of them now)

Did you try your DS in the Urban?

I think the extendable handlebar makes the buggy v v long, so would go for the 2004 if you don't need the height (we do unfortunately); however if you intend to use a buggyboard/kiddyboard you'd have more room with the extendable handlebar.

2005 basket is bigger, but then the 2004 one isn't tiny.

I almost feel justified in buying one now that we're (hopefully) having another baby. Just got to summon up the energy to try one out...

accessorizequeen · 30/07/2006 20:23

Cor, that was quick aw! Nope, haven't tried him in mb, I just decided that it was the better pushchair & the mugaboo doesn't do what I want it to do (e.g. walk in woods with baby & toddler etc). If it's too laid back for ds1 or ds2 (yup, having another boy) I'll stick a cushion in there. I'm having a nightmare pushing it anywhere at present, getting backwards into shops etc & just fed up. Ds1's head hitting the top & he's not that tall! I think I will go for 2005 version if I can find one, as will be using kiddyboard.
Surely you can wait until 1st trimester over, feels like such a hassle doesn't it to even get out of bed! Am 20 wks now, feeling v.energetic but know it's not going to last long so must sort pushchair out now. Tempted to sell bug on ebay 1st so I see how much I get, then can decide about price for mb urban. Wld really like to just splash out & buy new 1 in red, but have wasted 100's on pushchairs already (mb will be 6th)!

Bugaboo sucks in comparison. Really.

Anyway... one thing... I think 05 might have quick release mechanism on rear wheels which make it much easier to pop the wheels off for an easier fit into a smaller boot...

NotAnOtter · 30/07/2006 20:30

wont have a word said against bugaboo - which one do you have accessqueen?

NotAnOtter · 30/07/2006 20:30

also Hub I have a friend with both ( fourth time mum pramomatic like me and i know which she prefers!)

hub2dee · 30/07/2006 20:38

Yeah, she prefers the mugaboo because she knows she's got the MB if she needs to go anywhere remotely challenging, noa.

Oh, I do enjoy buggy wars.

misdee · 30/07/2006 20:39

what you need is an old battered welded together kiwi explorer............

accessorizequeen · 30/07/2006 21:01

oh, no, let's not get into this! Then you'll start on mb urban vs terrain (and I will not be persuaded...) and it will be 500 messages long! I have bugaboo frog, btw.
Thanks for tip about wheels coming off, hub2dee, but do they go back on again as quickly?!

i have chameleon BUT and its a big but in the great Otter Buggy debate that has occured in our household this weekend i have decided that for our vacation to Windy Norfolk : 0 / i shall be taking my Out and About 10k otherwise known as nipper with big wheels.... chew on that!

hub2dee · 30/07/2006 21:20

Off and on in an instant, aq. Front wheel takes much longer - I dunno - 30 seconds off, 60 seconds on ? (on the Terrain).

hub2dee · 30/07/2006 21:21

btw - can I ask, aq, what prompted the 'nearly convinced myself to swap mugaboo for mb' ?

accessorizequeen · 30/07/2006 21:33

Well, actually I think I have convinced myself
Just got to be arsed to sell bug on ebay, it's so hard to wrap a pushchair in brown paper iykwim.
hub, are you just fishing for comments praising mb & downgrading bug hee hee? What prompted me was that when we went to replace jane powertrack 360 (pushchair no.1) I really liked the mb urban but dp was keen on bug (coz of turning seat around) so I let him win. And all i've been able to think about for 18 months or so is how easily the mb folded up. I thought of this every single time I folded the bugaboo
And the other stuff, like it's horrible to push anywhere other than a shopping centre.

OP posts:
accessorizequeen · 30/07/2006 21:34

I don't actually go to shopping centres with ds,though.

baby faces away ....

my nan always says - cue broad lancastrian accent- ' baby could have died and you'd never know'

misdee · 30/07/2006 21:37

i actually hyanker after a MB (cant afford one, even after selling my car lol) maybe add it to my list for dream baby #4. would have to get a carry cot though.

CantSleepWontSleep · 30/07/2006 21:40

We have 2005 model (urban), and it's great off road. We live in coutryside, and even took it over muddy horse battered field in Feb (which I wouldn't recommend doing, but it did just cope!).

I'll second hub's comments about the wheels going on and off easily. Went into dentist with titchy twisty doorway and had to take a wheel off (with DD insitu) to get it in, and then put it back on again once inside, and it wasn't any trouble.

Disagree with tac about needing the carrycot though. We just put DD straight into it (with sheepskin) with the seat lowered right down.

hub2dee · 30/07/2006 21:41

Not fishing, no... just wondered as you seemed to have done so much research into it I was surprised you wanted out so soon IYSWIM. I think the bugaboo fold is acknowledged to be very tricky.

CantSleepWontSleep · 30/07/2006 21:42

nao - your nan would be wrong - there's a flap on the top which you can look through to see baby whilst the seat is lowered to newborn level.

NotAnOtter · 30/07/2006 21:44

not propery those flaps dont compare to seeing ant talking to a facing child

hub2dee · 30/07/2006 21:52

"I just love staring at my parents all day when we're out and about"

or

"I love being able to see all the interesting things on the street when we're out and about"

Are you going to tell me it improves speech development now ?

NotAnOtter · 30/07/2006 21:53

sure am and you should know better = did you do child development?

misdee · 30/07/2006 21:53

hub, my dd3 loved facing me. but thats bgecause she cant see very well unless she keeps her glasses on.

NotAnOtter · 30/07/2006 21:54

flies in eyes or talk to someone who can comment on what i am seeing?? Its a difficult one

hub2dee · 30/07/2006 22:04

pmsl at flies ? How friggin' fast do you walk, noa ?

And it's such a pity all those babies who forward faced in their buggies never learnt to talk...
