On holiday in Florida Keys last week, one of our party gets invited for tea at zillionaires row and goes to nursery suite to see new baby. They had a BABY WIPE WARMING MACHINE!!!!!! Cannot believe it - only in America. I looked everywhere for one to bring home to give to a friend of mine. Ay Caramba, it weren't like that in my day!!

I had a friend in LA who is a millionaire. When I knew him he had a four year old daughter, was divorced and saw his daughter two or three days a week. He had several homes and used to get his various "staff" - housekeepers etc. to drive his child to and from the different houses as he was usually too busy to do it himself. He was going to get his daughter microchipped ( like we do with pets) and get all his staff fingerprinted in case any of them tried to abduct his daughter.....I told him we have a very old fashioned but cheaper system here in the UK - we do not let our children be looked after by anyone we do not trust!

I did a search on Altavista.com for "baby wipe warmer" and found the item - it was subject to a product recall in March 2001! Apparently the interior basin in which the wipes were stored was subject to cracking and the moisture from the wipes got into the electics, causing shocks to anyone touching the wipes. Was this a case of fry the rich?!! Actually, it would have only cost $19.99...

Shall we continue the useless/awful present theme? Mine (for my baby boy) was a cutesy-print fabric frilly lined wicker basket containing baby products, 90% of which I'd said in advance I would never use on a baby eg. talcum powder, baby oil and vaseline. This gift was from my mother!!!

I have to say reading this thread did put a smile on my face :_ which I haven't had for a long time!!

What do you mean - haven't you ALL got one already??? For me it was the most indispenable part of my baby equipment. I mean have YOU ever had your private parts wiped by a cold and wet cloth when walking in the lakes? I could never inflict that on dd. Some of you are just soooo unthinking of your children's bottoms - practically cruel is what I'd call you!!!

But seriously, surely the real irony is that this was found in flippin' Florida of all places - not exactly the same weather as, say, Iceland - where there may be more of a valid reason to use one!

My friend who would have been the proud recipient of the wiper warmer had I found one, is expecting number two baby after a very long long gap. Partner is beside himself because he wants to go out and buy all the stuff his brother & sis in law bought for their first and cannot understand why my friend has put her foot down with a firm hand and is having none of it!! Talk of 'my first slept in a drawer' sends him off into fainting fits!! That's why I thought the bum wipe warmer would be so apt.

Just seen your message Lizzer - yes, it is quite warm in the Keys and I suppose its another symptom of the trophy child syndrome. If it wasn't so funny it'd be soooo sad!

Must admit, did use to keep my wipes box on the radiator in the winter!

Trying to think of tacky presents (I probably give most of them). Must admit I am a lover of the kitsch (sp?) and tacky and love my pens with the fluffy ends! Have a nice collection of colourful wellingtons too! I love it when my DD (3)has to wear all my make up and have her fingers and toes painted, she's not a tomboy after all. R

Yukky, a wipe warmer - don't the wipes get all slimey and go off? Who thinks of these things?

Star, I agree with you - I also love tacky things. When in Florida last year, they actually had a "Hello Kitty" shop with absolutely everything imaginable in it. My daughter had a field day - would have bought up the whole shop if we had enough money/space in the suitcase.

My DH has just given me a purple plush nodding dog for my purple car. Things don't get much tackier than that, do they???

Noone really believed me about the wipe warmer till I told them that you guys knew about it - suddenly it was ok...!

Hi Star, we've only got some hairgrips and eyeshadow I'm afraid. All little things get lost at the moment as DD is 3, she pulls out the hairgrips and puts the eyeshadow all over her face and down her tops!

Yes I am a great lover of crap, I am the one at the end of the sale wondering why no one wants this lovely lime green jumper, I can't help it, I think it's called Jonathan Ross syndrome! R

Star, if you ever find yourself at portobello or Spitalfields markets in london, you will find whole stalls devoted to 'hello kitty' and related stuff, often manned by ultra fashionable japanse affectionados.

As an ex-stall-holder of retro clothing, one of my biggest coups came from selling some sixites window display material (all swirly selophane circles) to a kitsch stall holder. Cost me 50p, and I sold them for £150.00

Reading this tread I did laugh at the baby wipe warmer. Lets hope there was a device to remove them after use PDQ. The smell of warm used babywipes must be even worse then the smell of cold used babywipes.

star, when dp was in Hong Kong he visited the Hello Kitty shop and bought me back a Hello Kitty padded coat hanger. Surely the height of kitsch. But he COULD have bought me the Hello Kitty waffle maker.

This takes me back years to the time of "Holly Hobby"! Am I showing my age?!
